DESCRIPTION

The crankshaft position sensor system consists of a crankshaft position sensor plate and a pickup coil.
The sensor plate has 34 teeth and is installed on the crankshaft. The pickup coil is made of wound copper wire, an iron core and magnet. The sensor plate rotates and, as each tooth passes by the pickup coil, a pulse signal is created. The pickup coil generates 34 signals per revolution. Based on these signals, the ECM calculates the crankshaft position and engine speed. Using these calculations, the fuel injection time and ignition timing are controlled.

MONITOR DESCRIPTION

If there is no signal from the crankshaft position sensor despite the engine running, the ECM interprets this as a malfunction of the sensor.
If the malfunction is not repaired successfully, a DTC is stored 10 seconds after the engine is next started.

CONFIRMATION DRIVING PATTERN

  1. Connect the intelligent tester to the DLC3.
  2. Turn the ignition switch to ON and turn the tester on.
  3. Clear the DTCs (even if no DTCs are stored, perform the clear DTC procedure).
  4. Turn the ignition switch off and wait for at least 30 seconds.
  5. Turn the ignition switch to ON and turn the tester on.
  6. Start the engine.
  7. Idle the engine for 20 seconds or more.
  8. Enter the following menus: Powertrain / Engine and ECT / DTC.
  9. Read the pending DTCs.
    HINT:
    1. If a pending DTC is output, the system is malfunctioning.
    2. If a pending DTC is not output, perform the following procedure.
  10. Enter the following menus: Powertrain / Engine and ECT / Utility / All Readiness.
  11. Input the DTC: P0335 or P0339.
  12. Check the DTC judgment result.

    1. DTC judgment completed
    2. System abnormal
    INCOMPLETE
    1. DTC judgment not completed
    2. Perform driving pattern after confirming DTC enabling conditions
    N/A
    1. Unable to perform DTC judgment
    2. Number of DTCs which do not fulfill DTC preconditions has reached ECU memory limit
    HINT:
    1. If the judgment result shows NORMAL, the system is normal.
    2. If the judgment result shows ABNORMAL, the system has a malfunction.
    3. If the judgment result shows INCOMPLETE or N/A, perform the Confirmation Driving Pattern and the DTC judgment result again.

INSPECTION PROCEDURE

HINT:
  1. After performing the inspection procedure for the crankshaft position sensor, if DTC P0335 and/or P0339 are output again, check the following items related to the VVT sensor.
    1. Installation condition of the VVT sensor
    2. Installation condition of the camshaft
    3. Connection of the VVT sensor connector
  2. If no problem is found through this diagnostic troubleshooting procedure, troubleshoot the engine mechanical system.
  3. Check the engine speed. The engine speed can be checked by using the intelligent tester. To check, follow the operation below:
    1. Connect the intelligent tester to the DLC3.
    2. Start the engine.
    3. Turn the tester on.
    4. Enter the following menus: Powertrain / Engine and ECT / Data List / All Data / Engine Speed.
    1. The engine speed may be indicated as zero despite the engine running normally. This is caused by a lack of NE signals from the crankshaft position sensor. Alternatively, the engine speed may be indicated as less than the actual engine speed if the crankshaft position sensor output voltage is insufficient.
  4. Read freeze frame data using the intelligent tester. Freeze frame data records the engine condition when malfunctions are detected. When troubleshooting, freeze frame data can help determine if the vehicle was moving or stationary, if the engine was warmed up or not, if the air fuel ratio was lean or rich, and other data from the time the malfunction occurred.
1.READ VALUE USING INTELLIGENT TESTER (ENGINE SPEED)
  1. Connect the intelligent tester to the DLC3.

  1. Turn the ignition switch to ON.

  1. Turn the tester on.

  1. Enter the following menus: Powertrain / Engine and ECT / Data List / All Data / Engine Speed.

  1. Start the engine.

  1. Read the values displayed on the tester while the engine is running.

    OK:
    Correct values are displayed.
    HINT:
    1. To check the engine speed change, display the graph on the tester.
    2. If the engine does not start, check the engine speed while cranking.
    3. If the engine speed indicated on the tester remains at zero (0), there may be an open or short in the crankshaft position sensor circuit.
