DESCRIPTION

The crankshaft position sensor system consists of a No. 1 crankshaft position sensor plate and a pickup coil.
The sensor plate has 34 teeth and is installed on the crankshaft. The pickup coil is made of wound copper wire, an iron core and magnet. The sensor plate rotates and, as each tooth passes by the pickup coil, a pulse signal is created. The pickup coil generates 34 signals per engine revolution. Based on these signals, the ECM calculates the crankshaft position and engine speed. Using these calculations, the fuel injection time and ignition timing are controlled.

INSPECTION PROCEDURE

HINT:
  1. After performing the inspection procedure for the crankshaft position sensor, if DTC P0335 is output again, check the following items related to the camshaft position sensor.
    1. Installation condition of the camshaft position sensor
    2. Installation condition of the camshaft
    3. Connection of the camshaft position sensor connector
  2. If no problem is found through this diagnostic troubleshooting procedure, troubleshoot the engine mechanical systems.
  3. Check the engine speed. The engine speed can be checked using the Techstream. To check, follow the operation below:
    1. Connect the Techstream to the DLC3.
    2. Start the engine.
    3. Turn the Techstream on.
    4. Enter the following menus: Powertrain / Engine and ECT / Data List / Engine Speed.
    1. The engine speed may be indicated as zero despite the engine rotating normally. This is caused by a lack of NE signals from the crankshaft position sensor. Alternatively, the engine speed may be indicated as lower than the actual engine speed if the crankshaft position sensor output voltage is insufficient.
  4. Read freeze frame data using the Techstream. The ECM records vehicle and driving condition information as freeze frame data the moment a DTC is stored. When troubleshooting, freeze frame data can be helpful in determining whether the vehicle was running or stopped, whether the engine was warmed up or not, whether the air fuel ratio was lean or rich, as well as other data recorded at the time of a malfunction.
1.READ VALUE USING TECHSTREAM (ENGINE SPEED)
  1. Connect the Techstream to the DLC3.

  1. Turn the ignition switch to ON.

  1. Turn the Techstream on.

  1. Enter the following menus: Powertrain / Engine and ECT / Data List / Engine Speed.

  1. Start the engine.

  1. Read the values displayed on the Techstream while the engine is running.

    OK:
    Correct values are displayed.
    HINT:
    1. To check the engine speed change, display the graph on the Techstream.
    2. If the engine does not start, check the engine speed while cranking.
    3. If the engine speed indicated on the Techstream remains at zero (0), there may be an open or short in the crankshaft position sensor circuit.
