Automatic Transmission Assembly (For 1Gr-Fe) -- Removal |
- CAUTION:
- The automatic transmission assembly is very heavy. Be sure to follow the procedure described in the repair manual, or the engine lifter may suddenly drop.
- NOTICE:
- After turning the engine switch off, waiting time may be required before disconnecting the cable from the battery terminal. Therefore, make sure to read the disconnecting the cable from the battery terminal notice before proceeding with work.

2. DISCONNECT CABLE FROM NEGATIVE BATTERY TERMINAL |
- NOTICE:
- When disconnecting the cable, some systems need to be initialized after the cable is reconnected.

3. REMOVE INTAKE AIR SURGE TANK |

4. REMOVE NO. 1 ENGINE UNDER COVER SUB-ASSEMBLY |
Remove the 4 bolts.
Unhook the engine under cover from the vehicle body as shown in the illustration.
5. REMOVE REAR ENGINE UNDER COVER ASSEMBLY |
Remove the 4 bolts and rear engine under cover.
6. DRAIN AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION FLUID |
Remove the drain plug and gasket from the automatic transmission assembly and drain the ATF.
Install a new gasket and the drain plug to the automatic transmission assembly.
- Torque:
- 20 N*m{204 kgf*cm, 15 ft.*lbf}
Remove the filler plug and gasket.
Remove the drain plug and gasket, and drain the transfer oil.
8. DRAIN ENGINE COOLANT (w/o Air Cooled Transmission Oil Cooler) |
- CAUTION:
- Do not remove the radiator cap while the engine and radiator are still hot. Pressurized, hot engine coolant and steam may be released and cause serious burns.

Loosen the radiator drain cock plug.
Remove the radiator cap and drain the coolant.
- HINT:
- Collect the coolant in a container and dispose of it according to the regulations in your area.
Loosen the cylinder block drain cock plug and drain the coolant from the engine.

Remove the flywheel housing side cover from the engine assembly.
15. REMOVE DRIVE PLATE AND TORQUE CONVERTER ASSEMBLY SETTING BOLT |
Turn the crankshaft to gain access to the removable locations of the 6 drive plate and torque converter assembly setting bolts and remove each bolt while holding the crankshaft pulley bolt with a wrench.
- HINT:
- There will be one black colored bolt.
16. DISCONNECT TRANSMISSION CONTROL CABLE ASSEMBLY |
Remove the clip and nut and disconnect the transmission control cable assembly from the transmission control shaft lever LH and transmission control cable bracket.
17. REMOVE TRANSMISSION INSULATOR RH |
w/ ATF Warmer:
Remove the bolt and wire harness clamp bracket from the transmission insulator RH.
Remove the 2 bolts and transmission insulator RH from the automatic transmission assembly.
w/o ATF Warmer:
Remove the 3 bolts and transmission insulator RH from the automatic transmission assembly.
18. DISCONNECT OIL COOLER TUBE (w/ ATF Warmer) |
Slide the 2 clips and disconnect the 2 oil cooler hoses from the transmission oil thermostat.
- HINT:
- Use a container to catch any ATF.
Remove the 2 bolts and disconnect the 2 oil cooler tubes from the automatic transmission assembly and engine assembly.
19. DISCONNECT OIL COOLER TUBE (w/o ATF Warmer) |
Disconnect the 2 oil cooler tubes from the automatic transmission assembly.
- HINT:
- Use a container to catch any ATF.
Remove the 2 bolts and disconnect the 2 oil cooler tubes from the automatic transmission assembly and engine assembly.
20. DISCONNECT WATER BY-PASS PIPE (w/ ATF Warmer) |
Slide the 2 clips and disconnect the 2 water by-pass hoses from the transmission oil cooler assembly.
- HINT:
- Use a container to catch any coolant.
Remove the 2 bolts and disconnect the water by-pass pipe from the automatic transmission assembly.
21. REMOVE FRONT SUSPENSION MEMBER BRACKET LH AND RH |
Remove the 8 bolts, front suspension member bracket LH and RH from the No. 3 frame crossmember sub-assembly and vehicle body.
22. SUPPORT AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION ASSEMBLY |
Support the automatic transmission assembly with a transmission jack.
- NOTICE:
- In order to protect the automatic transmission oil pan sub-assembly, place attachments on the transmission jack.
- Make sure that the attachments and the automatic transmission oil pan sub-assembly are centered on the transmission jack.
- To prevent the automatic transmission oil pan sub-assembly from deforming, do not place any attachments under the automatic transmission oil pan sub-assembly of the automatic transmission assembly.
- Secure the automatic transmission assembly to the transmission jack using a belt, etc. to prevent it from falling.
23. REMOVE NO. 3 FRAME CROSSMEMBER SUB-ASSEMBLY |
Remove the 4 bolts and disconnect the No. 3 frame crossmember sub-assembly from the rear engine mounting insulator.
Remove the 4 bolts, 4 nuts and No. 3 frame crossmember sub-assembly from the vehicle body.
24. REMOVE REAR NO. 1 ENGINE MOUNTING INSULATOR |
Remove the bolt and engine mounting heat insulator from the rear No. 1 engine mounting insulator.
Remove the 4 bolts and rear No. 1 engine mounting insulator from the automatic transmission assembly.
25. REMOVE TRANSMISSION BREATHER BRACKET |
Tilt down the automatic transmission assembly.
- NOTICE:
- Make sure that the cooling fan and fan shroud do not contact the engine assembly when tilting the automatic transmission assembly.
Disconnect the 2 breather hoses and detach the wire harness clamp from the transmission breather bracket.
Remove the bolt and transmission breather bracket from the automatic transmission assembly.
Remove the clamp from the transmission breather bracket.
- HINT:
- It is not necessary to remove the transmission clamps they are being replaced.
26. DISCONNECT WIRE HARNESS |
Disconnect the breather hose from the wire harness.
Disconnect the park/neutral position switch connector, transmission wire connector, 2 speed sensor connectors and transfer connector.
- HINT:
- Detach the claw, press down the lever, and then disconnect the transmission wire connector.
Detach the heated oxygen sensor connector from the wire harness clamp bracket.
Detach 2 wire harness clamps.
Remove the 4 bolts and disconnect the wire harness from the automatic transmission assembly.
27. REMOVE AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION ASSEMBLY |
Disconnect the breather hose from the engine assembly.
Remove the 9 bolts and automatic transmission assembly from the engine assembly.
- NOTICE:
- To prevent damage to the 2 knock pins, do not pry between the automatic transmission assembly and engine assembly.
28. REMOVE TRANSFER ASSEMBLY |
Remove the 8 bolts and bracket.
Remove the transfer assembly from the transmission.
29. REMOVE TRANSMISSION OIL COOLER ASSEMBLY (w/ ATF Warmer) |
- HINT:
- It is not necessary to remove the transmission oil cooler assembly unless it is being replaced.
Slide the 2 clips and disconnect the 2 oil cooler hoses from the automatic transmission assembly.
- HINT:
- Use a container to catch any ATF.
Remove the 3 bolts and transmission oil cooler assembly with transmission oil thermostat.
30. REMOVE TRANSMISSION CONTROL CABLE BRACKET |
- HINT:
- It is not necessary to remove the transmission control cable bracket unless it is being replaced.
Remove the 2 bolts and transmission control cable bracket from the automatic transmission assembly.
31. REMOVE TRANSMISSION OIL PAN HEAT INSULATOR |
- HINT:
- It is not necessary to remove the transmission oil pan heat insulator unless it is being replaced.
Remove the 3 bolts and transmission oil pan heat insulator from the automatic transmission assembly.
32. REMOVE TORQUE CONVERTER ASSEMBLY |
Put matchmarks on the automatic transmission assembly and the torque converter assembly.

Remove the torque converter assembly from the automatic transmission assembly.
- NOTICE:
- Remove the torque converter assembly from the input shaft horizontally.
33. REMOVE WIRE HARNESS CLAMP BRACKET |
- HINT:
- It is not necessary to remove the wire harness clamp brackets unless they are being replaced.
Detach the 8 wire harness clamps and claw and remove the 4 wire harness clamp brackets from the wire harness.
w/o ATF Warmer:
Remove the bolt and wire harness clamp bracket from the automatic transmission assembly.
34. INSPECT TORQUE CONVERTER CLUTCH ASSEMBLY |
Inspect the one-way clutch.
Press on the spline of the stator with a finger and rotate the spline. Check that the spline rotates smoothly when turned clockwise and rotates with difficulty when turned counterclockwise.

If necessary, clean the torque converter assembly and recheck the one-way clutch. Replace the torque converter assembly if the one-way clutch still fails the inspection.
Inspect the torque converter assembly.
If any of the following problems are present, replace the torque converter assembly.

- A metallic sound is emitted from the torque converter assembly during the stall test or when the shift lever is moved to N.
- The one-way clutch turns smoothly or locks in both directions.
- The amount of powder in the ATF is more than the sample shown in the illustration (refer to the sample).
- HINT:
- The sample shows approximately 0.025 liters (0.026 US qts, 0.022 Imp. qts) of ATF in petri dish, which has been taken from a torque converter assembly.
Replace the ATF in the torque converter assembly.
If the ATF is discolored or has a foul odor, stir the ATF in the torque converter assembly and drain it before replacing the ATF.
Prevent deformation of the torque converter and damage to the oil pump gear.

- NOTICE:
- Make sure that all of the bolts are the same length and that the specified bolts are used.
- HINT:
- If there is any damage to the tip of a bolt for the torque converter assembly or to the bottom of a bolt hole, replace the bolt and torque converter assembly.
Check the drive plate for damage.

Set up a dial indicator and measure the runout at the 6 areas on the drive plate surface that contact the torque converter assembly.
- Maximum runout:
- 0.30 mm (0.0118 in.)
If the runout is more than the maximum or the drive plate is damaged, replace the drive plate.
