P0012 P0022 Valve timing is not adjusted in valve timing retard range (2 trip detection logic)

Monitor description

  1. The ECM optimizes the intake valve timing using the VVT (Variable Valve Timing) system to control the intake camshaft. The VVT system includes the ECM, the camshaft Oil Control Valve (OCV) and the VVT controller. The ECM sends a target duty-cycle control signal to the OCV. This control signal regulates the oil pressure supplied to the VVT controller. The VVT controller can advance or retard the intake camshaft.
  2. If the difference between the target and actual intake valve timings is large, and changes in the actual intake valve timing are small, the ECM interprets this as the VVT controller stuck malfunction and stores a DTC.
  1. Example:
  2. A DTC is stored when conditions 1 and 2 are met:
    1. 1. It takes 5 seconds or more to change the valve timing by 5°CA.
    2. 2. After the above condition 1 is met, the OCV is forcibly activated 63 times or more (when the vehicle is idling, this takes approximately 100 seconds).
  3. DTC P0011 and P0021 (Advanced Cam Timing) are subject to 1 trip detection logic.
  4. DTC P0012 and P0022 (Retarded Cam Timing) are subject to 2 trip detection logic.
  5. These DTCs indicate that the VVT controller cannot operate properly due to OCV malfunctions or the presence of foreign objects in the OCV.

Inspection procedure

HINT:

Abnormal Bank Advanced Timing Over (Valve Timing is Out of Specified Range) Retarded Timing Over (Valve Timing is Out of Specified Range)
Bank 1 P0011 P0012
Bank 2 P0021 P0022
  1. DTC P0011, P0012, P0021 or P0022 may be stored when foreign objects in the engine oil are caught in some parts of the system. The DTC will remain stored even if the system returns to normal after a short time. Foreign objects are filtered out by the oil filter.
  2. If DTC P0011 or P0012 is output, check the right bank VVT system for the intake camshaft circuit (bank 1).
  3. Bank 1 refers to the bank that includes the No. 1 cylinder.
  4. If DTC P0021 or P0022 is output, check the left bank VVT system for the intake camshaft circuit (bank 2).
  5. Bank 2 refers to the bank that does not include the No. 1 cylinder.
  6. Read freeze frame data using the intelligent tester. Freeze frame data records the engine condition when malfunctions are detected. When troubleshooting, freeze frame data can help determine if the vehicle was moving or stationary, if the engine was warmed up or not, if the air fuel ratio was lean or rich, and other data from the time the malfunction occurred.

1.CHECK ANY OTHER DTCS OUTPUT (IN ADDITION TO DTC P0011, P0012, P0021 OR P0022)

  1. Connect the intelligent tester to the DLC3.

  1. Turn the ignition switch to ON and turn the tester on.

  1. Enter the following menus: Powertrain / Engine and ECT / DTC.

  1. Read the DTCs.

    P0011, P0012, P0021 or P0022 and other DTCs B

    HINT:

If any DTCs other than P0011, P0012, P0021 or P0022 are output, troubleshoot those DTCs first.

2.PERFORM ACTIVE TEST USING INTELLIGENT TESTER (OPERATE OCV)

  1. Connect the intelligent tester to the DLC3.

  1. Start the engine and turn the tester on.

  1. Warm up the engine.

  1. Enter the following menus: Powertrain / Engine and ECT / Active Test / Control the VVT System (Bank 1) or Control the VVT System (Bank 2).

  1. Check the engine speed while operating the camshaft Oil Control Valve (OCV) using the tester.

3.CHECK WHETHER DTC OUTPUT RECURS (DTC P0011, P0012, P0021 OR P0022)

  1. Connect the intelligent tester to the DLC3.

  1. Turn the ignition switch to ON and turn the tester on.

  1. Clear the DTCs.

  1. Start the engine and warm it up.

  1. Switch the ECM from normal mode to check mode using the tester.

  1. Drive the vehicle for more than 10 minutes.

  1. Read the DTCs using the tester.

4.CHECK VALVE TIMING (CHECK FOR LOOSE AND JUMPED TEETH ON TIMING CHAIN)

DTC P0011. Land Cruiser. Engine 1GR-FE. Remove the cylinder head cover.

  1. Remove the cylinder head cover.

  1. Turn the crankshaft pulley, and align its groove with the timing mark "0" of the timing chain cover.

  1. Check that the timing marks of the camshaft timing gears are aligned with the timing marks of the bearing cap as shown in the illustration.

If not, turn the crankshaft 1 revolution (360°), then align the marks as above.

    OK:

Timing marks on camshaft timing gears are aligned as shown in the illustration.

5.INSPECT CAMSHAFT OIL CONTROL VALVE ASSEMBLY

DTC P0011. Land Cruiser. Engine 1GR-FE. Remove the cylinder head cover.

  1. Remove the OCV.

  1. Measure the resistance according to the value(s) in the table below.

    Standard Resistance:

    Tester Connection Condition Specified Condition
    1 - 2 20°C (68°F) 6.9 to 7.9 ?

    HINT:

DTC P0011, P0012, P0021 or P0022 is output when foreign objects in engine oil are caught in some parts of the system. These codes will stay stored even if the system returns to normal after a short time. These foreign objects are then captured by the oil filter, thus eliminating the source of the problem.
