METER / GAUGE SYSTEM - Tachometer Malfunction


DESCRIPTION

In this circuit, the meter CPU receives engine revolution signals from the ECM using the CAN communication line (CAN No. 1 Bus). The meter CPU displays engine revolution data that is calculated based on the data received from the ECM.

INSPECTION PROCEDURE

1.CHECK CAN COMMUNICATION SYSTEM

  1. Check if CAN communication DTC is output (COROLLA_ZRE142 RM000000WIB0BUX.html).

    Result:

2.PERFORM ACTIVE TEST USING TECHSTREAM (TACHO METER OPERATION)

  1. Connect the Techstream to the DLC3.

  1. Turn the ignition switch to ON.

  1. Turn the Techstream on.

  1. Enter the following menus: Body Electrical / Combination Meter / Active Test.

  1. Check the operation by referring to the values in the table below.

    Combination Meter
    Tester Display
    		 Test Part
    		Control Range
    		Diagnostic Note
    Tacho Meter Operation
    		Tachometer
    		0, 1000, 2000, 3000, 4000, 5000, 6000, 7000 (rpm)
    		Confirm that the vehicle is stopped, engine idling
    OK:
    Tachometer indication is normal.

3.READ VALUE USING TECHSTREAM (ENGINE RPM)

  1. Connect the Techstream to the DLC3.

  1. Turn the ignition switch on.

  1. Turn the Techstream on.

  1. Enter the following menus: Body Electrical / Combination Meter / Data List.

  1. Check the values by referring to the values in the table below.

    Tester Display
    		Measurement Item/Range
    		Normal Condition
    		Diagnostic Note
    Engine Rpm
    		Engine speed/Min.: 0 rpm, Max.: 12750 rpm
    		Almost same as actual engine speed (Tachometer indication)
    		If data received from the ECM exceeds the range that can be displayed on the meter, the meter continues to display the maximum value of the range.

    Result:

    Tachometer indication is differ from the Techstream indication.

4.READ VALUE USING TECHSTREAM (ENGINE SPEED)

  1. Connect the Techstream to the DLC3.

  1. Turn the ignition switch to ON.

  1. Turn the Techstream ON.

  1. Enter the following menus: Powertrain / Engine and ECT / Data List.

  1. Check the values by referring to the table below.

5.REPLACE ECM

  1. Replace the ECM with a new or a known good one (COROLLA_ZRE142 RM000002WT506MX.html for 2AZ-FE, COROLLA_ZRE142 RM000001CN0030X.html for 2ZR-FE).

    OK:
    The operation of the tachometer returns to normal.
