DESCRIPTION

The crankshaft position sensor system consists of a crankshaft angle sensor rotor and pickup coil.
The sensor rotor has 34 teeth and is installed to the crankshaft. The pickup coil is made of wound copper wire, an iron core and magnet. The sensor rotor rotates and, as each tooth passes by the pickup coil, a pulse signal is created. The pickup coil generates 34 signals per crankshaft revolution. Based on these signals, the ECM calculates the crankshaft position and engine speed. Using these calculations, the fuel injection time and ignition timing are controlled.

DTC No.
DTC Detection Condition
Trouble Area
P0335
Either condition is met:
  1. No crankshaft position sensor signal is sent to the ECM while cranking (1 trip detection logic).
  2. No crankshaft position sensor signal is sent to the ECM at an engine speed of 600 rpm or more (1 trip detection logic).
  1. Open or short in crankshaft position sensor circuit
  2. Crankshaft position sensor
  3. Crankshaft angle sensor rotor
  4. ECM
P0339
Under conditions (a), (b) and (c), no crankshaft position sensor signal is sent to the ECM for 0.05 seconds or more (1 trip detection logic):
(a) Engine speed is 1000 rpm or more.
(b) Starter signal is off.
(c) 3 seconds or more have elapsed since the starter signal switched from on to off.
  1. Open or short in crankshaft position sensor circuit
  2. Crankshaft position sensor
  3. Crankshaft angle sensor rotor

    HINT:
    1. The correct waveforms are as shown.
    2. VV1+ and VV2+ are the VVT sensor signals, and NE+ is the crankshaft position sensor signal.
    3. Grounding failure of the shielded wire may cause noise in the waveforms.

MONITOR DESCRIPTION

If there is no signal from the crankshaft position sensor despite the crankshaft revolving, the ECM interprets this as a malfunction of the sensor.
If the malfunction is not repaired successfully, a DTC is stored 10 seconds after the engine is next started.

INSPECTION PROCEDURE

HINT:
After performing the inspection procedure for the crankshaft position sensor, if DTC P0335 is output again, check the following items related to the VVT sensor.
  1. Installation condition of the VVT sensor
  2. Installation condition of the camshaft
  3. Connection of the VVT sensor connector
HINT:
  1. If no problem is found through this diagnostic troubleshooting procedure, troubleshoot the engine mechanical system.
  2. Check the engine speed. The engine speed can be checked by using the GTS. To check the engine speed, follow the procedure below:
    1. Connect the GTS to the DLC3.
    2. Start the engine.
    3. Turn the GTS on.
    4. Enter the following menus: Powertrain / Engine and ECT / Data List / Engine Speed.
    1. The engine speed may be indicated as zero despite the crankshaft revolving normally. This is caused by a lack of NE signals from the crankshaft position sensor. Alternatively, the engine speed may be indicated as lower than the actual engine speed if the crankshaft position sensor output voltage is insufficient.
  3. Read freeze frame data using the GTS. Freeze frame data records the engine condition when malfunctions are detected. When troubleshooting, freeze frame data can help determine if the vehicle was moving or stationary, if the engine was warmed up or not, if the air-fuel ratio was lean or rich, and other data from the time the malfunction occurred.
1.READ VALUE USING GTS (ENGINE SPEED)
  1. Connect the GTS to the DLC3.

  1. Turn the ignition switch to ON.

  1. Turn the GTS on.

  1. Enter the following menus: Powertrain / Engine and ECT / Data List / Engine Speed.

  1. Start the engine.

  1. Read the values displayed on the GTS while the engine is running.

    OK:
    Correct values are displayed.
    HINT:
    1. To check the engine speed change, display the graph on the GTS.
    2. If the engine does not start, check the engine speed while cranking.
    3. If the engine speed indicated on the GTS remains at zero (0), there may be an open or short in the crankshaft position sensor circuit.
