DESCRIPTION

  1. These DTCs are designed to detect opens or shorts in the camshaft timing oil control valve circuit. If the duty-cycle for the camshaft timing oil control valve is excessively high or low while the engine is running, the ECM will illuminate the MIL and store the DTC.
  2. The VVT (Variable Valve Timing) system adjusts the exhaust valve timing to improve driveability. The engine oil pressure turns the camshaft actuator to adjust the valve timing. The camshaft timing oil control valve is a solenoid valve and switches the engine oil line. The valve moves when the ECM applies 12 V to the solenoid. The ECM changes the energizing time of the solenoid (duty-cycle) in accordance with the camshaft position, crankshaft position, throttle position, etc.

INSPECTION PROCEDURE

HINT:
  1. If DTC P0013 is output, check the bank 1 VVT system for the exhaust camshaft circuit.
  2. Bank 1 refers to the bank that includes the No. 1 cylinder*.
    *: The No. 1 cylinder is the cylinder which is farthest from the transmission.
  3. If DTC P0023 is output, check the bank 2 VVT system for the exhaust camshaft circuit.
  4. Bank 2 refers to the bank that does not include the No. 1 cylinder.
  5. Read freeze frame data using the GTS. Freeze frame data records the engine condition when malfunctions are detected. When troubleshooting, freeze frame data can help determine if the vehicle was moving or stationary, if the engine was warmed up or not, if the air-fuel ratio was lean or rich, and other data from the time the malfunction occurred.
1.CHECK DTC (DTC P0013 OR P0023)
  1. Connect the GTS to the DLC3.

  1. Clear the DTCs after recording the freeze frame data and DTCs.

  1. Turn the ignition switch off.

  1. Allow the engine to idle and check DTCs.

  1. Check that P0013 or P0023 is output.

    OK:
    P0013 or P0023 is output.

2.INSPECT CAMSHAFT TIMING OIL CONTROL VALVE ASSEMBLY
  1. Inspect the camshaft timing oil control valve assembly (for Exhaust Side of Bank 1, 2) (Click here).

  1. Disconnect the camshaft timing oil control valve assembly connector.

  1. Disconnect the ECM connector.

  1. Measure the resistance according to the value(s) in the table below.
