Automatic Transmission Assembly Removal

PRECAUTION
DISCONNECT CABLE FROM NEGATIVE BATTERY TERMINAL
REMOVE NO. 1 ENGINE UNDER COVER
REMOVE NO. 2 ENGINE UNDER COVER
REMOVE FRONT EXHAUST PIPE ASSEMBLY
REMOVE STARTER ASSEMBLY
REMOVE PROPELLER WITH CENTER BEARING SHAFT ASSEMBLY
DRAIN AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION FLUID
REMOVE TRANSMISSION OIL FILLER TUBE SUB-ASSEMBLY
DISCONNECT OIL COOLER TUBE
DISCONNECT TRANSMISSION CONTROL CABLE ASSEMBLY
SUPPORT AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION ASSEMBLY
REMOVE NO. 3 FRAME CROSSMEMBER SUB-ASSEMBLY
REMOVE REAR NO. 1 ENGINE MOUNTING INSULATOR
DISCONNECT WIRE HARNESS AND CONNECTOR
REMOVE DRIVE PLATE AND TORQUE CONVERTER SETTING BOLT
REMOVE MANIFOLD STAY
REMOVE AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION ASSEMBLY
REMOVE TRANSMISSION CONTROL CABLE BRACKET
REMOVE TORQUE CONVERTER ASSEMBLY
Automatic Transmission Assembly -- Removal |
- NOTICE:
- After turning the ignition switch off, waiting time may be required before disconnecting the cable from the battery terminal. Therefore, make sure to read the disconnecting the cable from the battery terminal notice before proceeding with work (HILUX_TGN26 RM000004QR1006X.html).
2. DISCONNECT CABLE FROM NEGATIVE BATTERY TERMINAL |
- NOTICE:
- When disconnecting the cable, some systems need to be initialized after the cable is reconnected (HILUX_TGN26 RM000004QR300CX.html).
3. REMOVE NO. 1 ENGINE UNDER COVER |
4. REMOVE NO. 2 ENGINE UNDER COVER |
5. REMOVE FRONT EXHAUST PIPE ASSEMBLY |
w/ Secondary Air Injection System:
Disconnect the air fuel ratio sensor connector and detach the wire harness clamp.
Disconnect the heated oxygen sensor connector and detach the wire harness clamp.
Remove the 4 bolts, 2 nuts and 2 compression springs.
Remove the front exhaust pipe from the exhaust pipe support.
6. REMOVE STARTER ASSEMBLY |

7. REMOVE PROPELLER WITH CENTER BEARING SHAFT ASSEMBLY |

8. DRAIN AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION FLUID |
Remove the drain plug and gasket, and drain ATF.
Install a new gasket and the drain plug.
- Torque:
- 20 N*m{205 kgf*cm, 15 ft.*lbf}
9. REMOVE TRANSMISSION OIL FILLER TUBE SUB-ASSEMBLY |
Remove the oil level dipstick.
Remove the 2 bolts and transmission oil filler tube.
Remove the O-ring from the transmission oil filler tube.
10. DISCONNECT OIL COOLER TUBE |
Using a union nut wrench, disconnect the outlet oil cooler tube and inlet oil cooler tube.
Remove the 3 bolts and 3 clamps.
11. DISCONNECT TRANSMISSION CONTROL CABLE ASSEMBLY |
Remove the nut and clip, and disconnect the transmission control cable.
12. SUPPORT AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION ASSEMBLY |
Support the automatic transmission assembly with a transmission jack.
13. REMOVE NO. 3 FRAME CROSSMEMBER SUB-ASSEMBLY |
Detach the wire harness clamp from the No. 3 frame crossmember.
Remove the 4 set bolts of the rear No. 1 engine mounting insulator.
Remove the 4 nuts, 4 bolts and No. 3 frame crossmember.
14. REMOVE REAR NO. 1 ENGINE MOUNTING INSULATOR |
Remove the 4 bolts, ground cable and engine mounting insulator.

15. DISCONNECT WIRE HARNESS AND CONNECTOR |
Remove the 2 bolts and heat insulator.
Tilt the transmission downward.
- NOTICE:
- Make sure the cooling fan does not contact the fan shroud.
Disconnect the park/neutral position switch connector, transmission wire connector, ATF temperature sensor connector and 3 speed sensor connectors.
Disconnect the 4 wire harness clamps.
16. REMOVE DRIVE PLATE AND TORQUE CONVERTER SETTING BOLT |
Remove the flywheel housing dust seal.
Turn the crankshaft to gain access to each bolt.
Hold the crankshaft pulley bolt with a wrench and remove the 6 torque converter setting bolts.
Remove the 3 bolts and manifold stay.
18. REMOVE AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION ASSEMBLY |
Remove the 7 bolts and automatic transmission assembly.
- NOTICE:
- Do not use excess force to pry off the transmission assembly.
19. REMOVE TRANSMISSION CONTROL CABLE BRACKET |
Remove the 2 bolts and control cable bracket from the transmission.
20. REMOVE TORQUE CONVERTER ASSEMBLY |
Remove the torque converter from the automatic transmission assembly.
