DTC P2111 Throttle Actuator Control System - Stuck Open

DTC P2112 Throttle Actuator Control System - Stuck Closed

DESCRIPTION

The throttle actuator is operated by the ECM, and opens and closes the throttle valve using gears. The opening angle of the throttle valve is detected by the Throttle Position (TP) sensor, which is built into the throttle body. The TP sensor provides feedback to the ECM. This feedback allows the ECM to appropriately control the throttle actuator and monitor the throttle opening angle as the ECM responds to driver inputs.

HINT:
This ETCS (Electronic Throttle Control System) does not use a throttle cable.

DTC No.
DTC Detection Condition
Trouble Area
P2111
The ECM signals the throttle actuator to close, but the actuator is stuck (1 trip detection logic).
  1. Throttle body with motor assembly
  2. Wire harness or connector
P2112
The ECM signals the throttle actuator to open, but the actuator is stuck (1 trip detection logic).

FAIL-SAFE

When either of these DTCs as well as other DTCs relating to ETCS (Electronic Throttle Control System) malfunctions are stored, the ECM enters fail-safe mode. During fail-safe mode, the ECM cuts the current to the throttle actuator and the throttle valve is returned to a 6.5° opening angle by the return spring. The ECM then adjusts the engine output by controlling the fuel injection (intermittent fuel-cut) and ignition timing in accordance with the accelerator pedal position to allow the vehicle to continue at a minimal speed. If the accelerator pedal is depressed firmly and gently, the vehicle can be driven slowly. The ECM continues operating in fail-safe mode until a pass condition is detected and the ignition switch is turned off.

INSPECTION PROCEDURE

HINT:
Read freeze frame data using the intelligent tester. Freeze frame data records the engine condition when malfunctions are detected. When troubleshooting, freeze frame data can help determine if the vehicle was moving or stationary, if the engine was warmed up or not, if the air fuel ratio was lean or rich, and other data from the time the malfunction occurred.
1.CHECK ANY OTHER DTCS OUTPUT (IN ADDITION TO DTC P2111 OR P2112)
  1. Connect the intelligent tester to the DLC3.

  1. Turn the ignition switch to ON.

  1. Turn the intelligent tester on.

  1. Enter the following menus: Powertrain / Engine and ECT / Trouble Codes.

  1. Read DTCs.

HINT:
If any DTCs other than P2111 or P2112 are output, troubleshoot those DTCs first.

2.INSPECT THROTTLE BODY WITH MOTOR ASSEMBLY (VISUALLY CHECK THROTTLE VALVE)
  1. Check for contamination between the throttle valve and housing. If necessary, clean the throttle body. Also, check that the throttle valve moves smoothly.

    OK:
Throttle valve is not contaminated with foreign objects and moves smoothly.

3.READ VALUE USING INTELLIGENT TESTER (THROTTLE POSITION)
  1. Connect the intelligent tester to the DLC3.

  1. Turn the ignition switch to ON.

  1. Turn the intelligent tester on.

  1. Clear DTCs (HILUX_TGN26 RM000000PDK0T7X.html).

  1. Turn the ignition switch off and wait for at least 30 seconds.

  1. Turn the ignition switch to ON.

  1. Enter the following menus: Powertrain / Engine and ECT / Data List / All Data / Throttle Position No. 1, Throttle Position No. 2 and Throttle Position Command.

  1. Check the values displayed on the intelligent tester while wiggling the ECM wire harness.

  1. Enter the following menus: Powertrain / Engine and ECT / Trouble Codes.

  1. Check for DTCs.
