Spiral Cable (For Hatchback) -- Installation |
- CAUTION:
- Some of these service operations affect the SRS airbag system. Read the precautionary notices concerning the SRS airbag system before servicing (YARIS_NCP93 RM000000KT10EAX.html).
1. INSTALL SPIRAL CABLE SUB-ASSEMBLY (w/o VSC) |
Check that the ignition switch is off.
Check that the cable is disconnected from the negative (-) battery terminal.
- CAUTION:
- Wait at least 90 seconds after disconnecting the cable from the negative (-) battery terminal to disable the SRS system.
Check that the front tires face straight forward.
Check that the turn signal switch is in the neutral position.
- NOTICE:
- Perform the operation when the turn signal switch is in the neutral position. Otherwise, the turn signal pin will break.
Engage the 3 claws to install the spiral cable sub-assembly.
- NOTICE:
- Pull the lock pin out before installing the steering wheel when replacing the spiral cable sub-assembly with a new one.
Connect the airbag connector.
Connect the horn connector.
2. INSTALL SPIRAL CABLE WITH SENSOR SUB-ASSEMBLY (w/ VSC) |
Check that the ignition switch is turned off.
Check that the negative battery terminal is detached.
- CAUTION:
- Wait at least 90 seconds after disconnecting the cable from the negative (-) battery terminal to disable the SRS system.
Check that the front tires face straight forward.
Check that the turn signal switch is in the neutral position.
- NOTICE:
- Perform the operation when the turn signal switch is in the neutral position. Otherwise, the turn signal pin will break.
Engage the 3 claws to install the spiral cable with sensor sub-assembly.
- NOTICE:
- Pull the lock pin out before installing the steering wheel when replacing the spiral cable with sensor sub-assembly with a new one.
Connect the steering sensor connector.
Connect the airbag connector.
Connect the horn connector.
3. INSTALL UPPER STEERING COLUMN COVER |
Engage the claw to install the upper steering column cover.
4. INSTALL LOWER STEERING COLUMN COVER |
Engage the 4 claws to install the lower steering column cover.
Install the 3 screws.
5. ADJUST SPIRAL CABLE |
Check that the ignition switch is turned off.
Check that the cable is disconnected from the negative (-) auxiliary battery terminal.
- CAUTION:
- Wait at least 90 seconds after disconnecting the cable from the negative (-) auxiliary battery terminal to disable the SRS system.
Confirm that the front tires face straight forward.
Center the spiral cable.
Turn the spiral cable counterclockwise until it locks.
- NOTICE:
- To avoid breaking the spiral cable, turn the spiral cable gently and do not use excessive force.
- Do not turn the spiral cable by the airbag wire harness.
- HINT:
- The spiral cable with sensor sub-assembly turns a maximum of approximately 5 times.
Turn the spiral cable 2.5 times clockwise from its locked position and align the alignment marks.

- To avoid breaking the spiral cable, turn the spiral cable gently and do not use excessive force.
- Do not turn the spiral cable by the airbag wire harness.
- HINT:
- The spiral cable can be rotated approximately 2.5 turns to both the left and right from the center.
6. INSTALL STEERING WHEEL ASSEMBLY |
Align the matchmarks and install the steering wheel assembly onto the steering column assembly.
Install the nut.
- Torque:
- 50 N*m{510 kgf*cm, 37 ft.*lbf}
Connect all the connectors to the spiral cable.
7. INSTALL STEERING PAD |
Check that the ignition switch is off.
Check that the cable is disconnected from the negative (-) battery terminal.
- CAUTION:
- Wait at least 90 seconds after disconnecting the cable from the negative (-) battery terminal to disable the SRS system.
Connect the 2 airbag connectors.

- Do not damage the airbag wire harness when connecting the airbag connector.
- Be sure to only connect the connectors to each corresponding color.
- Securely lock the locking button.

Connect the horn terminal.
Engage the 3 pins with the 3 snap rings to install the steering pad.
- NOTICE:
- Pull the steering pad to ensure that it is securely engaged.

8. INSTALL LOWER NO. 2 STEERING WHEEL COVER |
Engage the 2 claws to install the lower No. 2 steering wheel cover.
9. CONNECT CABLE TO NEGATIVE BATTERY TERMINAL |
- Torque:
- 5.4 N*m{55 kgf*cm, 48 in.*lbf}
10. INSPECT SRS WARNING LIGHT |
