DESCRIPTION
Active torque control 4WD system data can be read in the Data Link Connector 3 (DLC3) of the vehicle. When the system seems to be malfunctioning, use the intelligent tester to check for malfunctions and perform repairs. Therefore when there seems to be a problem with the active torque control 4WD, use the intelligent tester or SST to check and troubleshoot it.

  1. The vehicle's ECU uses the ISO 15765-4 communication protocol. The terminal arrangement of the DLC3 complies with SAE J1962 and matches the ISO 15765-4 format.
    Verify the conditions listed in the table below.

    NOTICE:
    *: Before measuring the resistance, leave the vehicle as is for at least 1 minute and do not operate the ignition switch, other switches or the doors.
    If the result is not as specified, the DLC3 may have a malfunction. Repair or replace the harness and connector.
    HINT:
    Connect the cable of the intelligent tester to the DLC3, turn the ignition switch on (IG) and attempt to use the tester. If the display indicates that a communication error has occurred, there is a problem either with the vehicle or with the tester.
    1. If communication is normal when the tester is connected to another vehicle, inspect the DLC3 of the original vehicle.
    1. If communication is still not possible when the tester is connected to another vehicle, the problem may be in the tester itself. Consult the Service Department listed in the tester's instruction manual.

FUNCTION OF 4WD INDICATOR LIGHT
  1. The 4WD indicator light in the combination meter (multi-information display) warns the driver of abnormal or poor condition of the 4WD control system.

  2. w/o Multi-information display:
    If the 4WD control ECU detects a malfunction, the 4WD indicator lights comes on in accordance with the trouble area to warn the driver.

  3. w/ Multi-information display:
    If the 4WD control ECU detects a malfunction, the check master caution indicator comes on (*1) and the multi-information display displays warning messages (*2) in accordance with the trouble area to warn the driver.

    HINT:
    Check that the master caution indicator comes on for approximately 4 seconds. (*1)

  1. Using SST, connect terminals 13 (TC) and 4 (CG) of the DLC3 (to enter diagnostic mode).

  2. Turn the ignition switch on (IG).

  4. "DIAG" is displayed on the multi-information display, and the 4WD control ECU checks the system for malfunctions.

    1. If the 4WD control system is normal, "4WD FF" will be displayed on the multi-information display.
    1. If the 4WD control system is not normal, " 4WD XX (DTC)" will be displayed on the multi-information display.

      Although the test mode is not set for the 4WD control system, the message shown in the illustration will be displayed on the multi-information display when the test mode is activated for checking the VSC, etc.
      HINT:
      1. Test mode DTCs will not be stored because the test mode is not set.
      1. On the multi-information display, VSC, TIRE PRESSURE and 4WD are displayed in order.
      1. If the systems above are not displayed on the multi-information display, there may be a malfunction in "TC and CG Terminal Circuit".
      1. If the 4WD indicator light check result is not normal, proceed to troubleshooting for the 4WD indicator light circuit.
