1. INSTALL CRANKSHAFT PULLEY SET KEY |
Install the 2 pulley keys to the crankshaft.
2. INSTALL NO. 4 CHAIN VIBRATION DAMPER |
Install the vibration damper with the 2 bolts.
- Torque:
- 18 N*m{184 kgf*cm, 13 ft.*lbf}
3. INSTALL NO. 2 CHAIN SUB-ASSEMBLY |
Install the timing sprocket as shown in the illustration.
- NOTICE:
- Check that the No. 1 cylinder is at TDC and that the weights of the No. 1 and No. 2 balanceshafts are at the bottom.
- HINT:
- Install the timing sprocket with the front mark facing forward.

As shown in the illustration, install the chain to the sprocket and gear with the mark plates aligned with the timing marks on the sprocket and gear.

Fit the other mark link of the chain behind the large timing mark of the balanceshaft drive gear.

Insert the balanceshaft drive gear shaft through the balanceshaft drive gear so that it fits into the thrust plate hole.
Align the small timing mark of the balanceshaft drive gear with the large timing mark of the balanceshaft timing gear.

Install the bolt to the balanceshaft drive gear.
- Torque:
- 25 N*m{255 kgf*cm, 18 ft.*lbf}
Check that each timing mark is aligned with the corresponding mark link.

4. INSTALL NO. 2 CHAIN TENSIONER ASSEMBLY |
Install the chain tensioner assembly with the nut.
- Torque:
- 18 N*m{184 kgf*cm, 13 ft.*lbf}
- NOTICE:
- Install the chain tensioner with the pin installed, and then remove the pin after installation. When performing this step, do not push the vibration damper against the chain.

Move the stopper plate downward to release the lock and push the plunger deep into the tensioner.

Move the stopper plate upward to set the lock and insert a hexagon wrench into the stopper plate hole.
5. INSTALL NO. 3 CHAIN VIBRATION DAMPER |
Install the chain vibration damper with the 2 bolts.

- 18 N*m{184 kgf*cm, 13 ft.*lbf}

6. INSTALL NO. 2 CHAIN VIBRATION DAMPER |
Install the chain vibration damper with the bolt.
- Torque:
- 27 N*m{270 kgf*cm, 20 ft.*lbf}

Remove the hexagon wrench from the chain tensioner assembly and release the plunger.
7. INSTALL OIL CONTROL VALVE FILTER |
Check that no foreign matter is on the mesh part of the filter.
If foreign matter is present, clean the part thoroughly.
Using an 8 mm hexagon wrench, install a new gasket and the oil control valve filter with the screw plug.
- Torque:
- 30 N*m{306 kgf*cm, 22 ft.*lbf}
8. INSTALL CYLINDER HEAD GASKET |
Clean and degrease the contact surfaces of the cylinder head sub-assembly and cylinder block sub-assembly.
Apply seal packing to a new cylinder head gasket as shown in the illustration.
- Seal Packing:
- Toyota Genuine Seal Packing Black, Three Bond 1207 B or equivalent.

- Be sure to clean and degrease the contact surfaces.
- Apply seal packing to the bead on the cylinder head gasket.
- Install the cylinder head gasket within 3 minutes and tighten the cylinder head set bolts within 15 minutes after applying seal packing.

9. INSTALL CYLINDER HEAD SUB-ASSEMBLY |
- HINT:
- Perform "Inspection After Repairs" after replacing the cylinder head sub-assembly (LandCruiser RM000004NJC03XX.html).
- The cylinder head bolts are tightened in 3 successive steps.
Place the cylinder head sub-assembly on the cylinder block.
- NOTICE:
- Make sure that no oil is on the mounting surface of the cylinder head sub-assembly.
- Place the cylinder head sub-assembly on the cylinder block gently so as not to damage the gasket with the bottom part of the cylinder head sub-assembly.
Install the plate washers to the cylinder head set bolts.
Apply a light coat of engine oil to the threads and under the heads of the cylinder head set bolts.
Step 1:
Using several steps, install and uniformly tighten the 10 cylinder head set bolts with plate washers in the sequence shown in the illustration.- Torque:
- 39 N*m{398 kgf*cm, 29 ft.*lbf}

Mark the front of each cylinder head set bolt head with paint.
Step 2:
Tighten the cylinder head set bolts 90° in the sequence shown in step 1.
Step 3:
Tighten the cylinder head set bolts another 90° in the sequence shown in step 1.
Check that the paint marks are now at a 180° angle to the front.
w/ Oil Cooler:
Connect the No. 4 water by-pass pipe with the bolt.- Torque:
- 20 N*m{204 kgf*cm, 15 ft.*lbf}
10. INSTALL CAMSHAFT TIMING EXHAUST GEAR ASSEMBLY |
- HINT:
- Perform "Inspection After Repairs" after replacing the camshaft timing exhaust gear assembly (LandCruiser RM000004NJC03XX.html).
Using SST, grip the hexagonal portion, and then secure SST and No. 2 camshaft in a vise as shown in the illustration.

11. INSTALL CAMSHAFT TIMING GEAR ASSEMBLY |

Using SST, grip the hexagonal portion, and then secure SST and camshaft in a vise as shown in the illustration.

Lightly press the gear against the camshaft and turn the gear. Push further at the position where the straight pin enters the straight pin hole.
- NOTICE:
- Be sure not to turn the camshaft timing gear assembly in the retard direction (the right angle).
Check that there is no clearance between the camshaft timing gear assembly and the flange of the camshaft.

- Since the thrust clearance of the camshaft is small, the camshaft must be kept level while it is being removed. If the camshaft is not kept level, the portion of the cylinder head receiving the shaft thrust may crack or be damaged, causing the camshaft to seize or break.
- Be sure not to remove the other 3 bolts. If removing the bolts, exchange the camshaft timing gear assembly.

With the camshaft timing gear assembly fixed in place, install the flange bolt.
- Torque:
- 78 N*m{795 kgf*cm, 58 ft.*lbf}
Check that the camshaft timing gear assembly can move in the retard direction (the right angle), and is locked at the most retarded position.
12. INSTALL VALVE STEM CAP |
Apply a light coat of engine oil to the valve stem ends.
Install the 16 valve stem caps to the cylinder head sub-assembly.
- NOTICE:
- Do not drop the valve stem caps into the cylinder head sub-assembly.
13. INSTALL VALVE LASH ADJUSTER ASSEMBLY |
Inspect each valve lash adjuster assembly before installing it (LandCruiser RM00000447K00SX_01_0017.html).
Install the 16 valve lash adjuster assemblies to the cylinder head sub-assembly.
- NOTICE:
- Install each valve lash adjuster assembly to the same place it was removed from.
14. INSTALL NO. 1 VALVE ROCKER ARM SUB-ASSEMBLY |
Apply clean engine oil to the valve lash adjuster assembly tips and valve stem cap surfaces.
Install the 16 No. 1 valve rocker arm sub-assemblies as shown in the illustration.

16. INSTALL CAMSHAFT BEARING CAP |
Temporarily install the No. 1 camshaft bearing cap.

Confirm the location for each No. 2 camshaft bearing cap and install each one to the proper location.
Uniformly temporarily install the 20 bolts while keeping the camshaft level.
Tighten the 20 bolts in the order shown in the illustration.
- Torque:

Install the crankshaft timing gear or sprocket as shown in the illustration.

Install the No. 1 chain vibration damper with the bolt and nut.
- Torque:
- 21 N*m{214 kgf*cm, 15 ft.*lbf}
19. INSTALL CHAIN SUB-ASSEMBLY |
As shown in the illustration, install the chain sub-assembly to the camshaft timing exhaust gear assembly and camshaft timing gear assembly with the mark plates aligned with the timing marks on the camshaft timing exhaust gear assembly and camshaft timing gear assembly.

20. INSTALL CHAIN TENSIONER SLIPPER |
Install the chain tensioner slipper with the bolt.

21. INSTALL NO. 1 CHAIN TENSIONER ASSEMBLY |
Move the stopper plate upward to release the lock and push the plunger deep into the tensioner.

Install a new gasket and the No. 1 chain tensioner assembly with the bolt and nut.

Remove the hexagon wrench from the No. 1 chain tensioner assembly and release the plunger.
22. CHECK NO. 1 CYLINDER TO TDC/COMPRESSION |
Check that the No. 1 cylinder is set to TDC/compression.
Rotate the crankshaft two full rotations, and then check that all timing marks are in the position shown in the illustration.

23. INSTALL TIMING CHAIN GUIDE |
Install a new O-ring to the No. 1 camshaft bearing cap.
Install the timing chain guide with the 2 bolts.
- Torque:
- 10 N*m{102 kgf*cm, 7 ft.*lbf}
24. INSTALL CYLINDER HEAD COVER CONNECTOR SUB-ASSEMBLY |
Install a new No. 2 camshaft bearing cap oil hole gasket and 3 new No. 3 camshaft bearing cap oil hole gaskets to the No. 1 camshaft bearing cap.
Install the cylinder head cover connector sub-assembly with the 2 bolts.
- Torque:
- 10 N*m{102 kgf*cm, 7 ft.*lbf}
25. INSTALL ENGINE WATER PUMP ASSEMBLY |
Install a new gasket and the engine water pump assembly with the 8 bolts.
- Torque:
- 8.9 N*m{91 kgf*cm, 79 in.*lbf}
26. INSTALL TIMING CHAIN COVER SUB-ASSEMBLY |
Install 3 new O-rings to the timing chain cover sub-assembly.
Clean and degrease the contact surfaces of the timing chain cover sub-assembly, cylinder head sub-assembly and cylinder block.
Apply seal packing as shown in the illustration.
- Seal packing:

Temporarily install the V-ribbed belt tensioner assembly with the 2 bolts.

- Make sure that the V-ribbed belt tensioner assembly is in contact with the timing chain cover sub-assembly.

28. INSTALL TIMING CHAIN COVER OIL SEAL |
Apply MP grease to the lip of a new timing chain case oil seal.
- NOTICE:
- Do not allow foreign matter to contact the lip of the timing chain case oil seal.
- Do not allow MP grease to contact the dust seal.

Temporarily install the timing chain case oil seal to the timing chain cover sub-assembly.
Using SST and a hammer, tap in the timing chain case oil seal until its surface is flush with the chain cover edge.

29. INSTALL NO. 1 TAPER SCREW PLUG (w/o Oil Cooler) |
Install the No. 1 taper screw plug to the cylinder block.

- 25 N*m{250 kgf*cm, 18 ft.*lbf}
30. INSTALL UNION (w/ Oil Cooler) |
Install the union to the cylinder block.
- Torque:
- 25 N*m{250 kgf*cm, 18 ft.*lbf}
31. INSTALL OIL FILTER BRACKET SUB-ASSEMBLY |
Using a hexagon wrench, install the oil filter bracket union.
- Torque:
- 25 N*m{250 kgf*cm, 18 ft.*lbf}
Install a new oil filter bracket gasket to the oil filter bracket.
Install a new O-ring to the oil filter bracket union.
- NOTICE:
- Apply a light coat of engine oil to the O-ring and oil filter bracket.
Install 2 new gaskets and the 2 screw plugs to the oil filter bracket.
- Torque:
- 49 N*m{500 kgf*cm, 36 ft.*lbf}
Install the oil filter bracket with the 2 bolts and nut.
- Torque:
- 25 N*m{255 kgf*cm, 18 ft.*lbf}
32. INSTALL OIL FILTER UNION (w/o Oil Cooler) |
Using a 27 mm socket wrench, install the oil filter union.
- Torque:
- 43 N*m{439 kgf*cm, 32 ft.*lbf}
33. INSTALL OIL COOLER ASSEMBLY (w/ Oil Cooler) |
Clean the contact surfaces of the oil filter bracket sub-assembly and oil cooler assembly.
Apply a light coat of engine oil to a new O-ring and install it to the oil cooler assembly.
Apply a light coat of engine oil to the threads of the oil cooler union bolt.
Align the protrusion of the oil filter bracket with the cutout of the oil cooler assembly.

Install the oil cooler assembly with the plate washer and oil cooler union bolt.
- Torque:
- 43 N*m{438 kgf*cm, 32 ft.*lbf}
Connect the No. 4 water by-pass hose and No. 5 water by-pass hose to the oil cooler assembly, and slide the 2 clamps to secure the hoses.
34. INSTALL NO. 4 WATER BY-PASS PIPE (w/ Oil Cooler) |
Install the No. 4 water by-pass pipe with the 2 bolts.
- Torque:
- 20 N*m{204 kgf*cm, 15 ft.*lbf}
Connect the No. 5 water by-pass hose to the oil cooler assembly, and slide the clip to secure the hose.
35. INSTALL NO. 4 WATER BY-PASS HOSE (w/ Oil Cooler) |
Install the No. 4 water by-pass hose to the oil cooler assembly and union, and slide the clips to secure the hoses.
36. INSTALL OIL FILTER SUB-ASSEMBLY |
Check and clean the oil filter sub-assembly installation surface.
Apply clean engine oil to the gasket of a new oil filter sub-assembly.
Lightly screw the oil filter sub-assembly into place by hand. Tighten it until the gasket contacts the seat.

Depending on the work space available, choose from the following.
If enough space is available, use a torque wrench to tighten the oil filter sub-assembly.- Torque:

37. INSTALL ENGINE COOLANT TEMPERATURE SENSOR |
- HINT:
- Perform "Inspection After Repairs" after replacing the engine coolant temperature sensor (LandCruiser RM000004NJC03XX.html).
Install a new gasket to the engine coolant temperature sensor.
Using a 19 mm deep socket wrench, install the engine coolant temperature sensor.
- Torque:
- 20 N*m{200 kgf*cm, 14 ft.*lbf}
Connect the engine coolant temperature sensor connector.
38. INSTALL KNOCK SENSOR |
- HINT:
- Perform "Inspection After Repairs" after replacing the knock sensor (LandCruiser RM000004NJC03XX.html).
Install the knock sensor with the bolt.
- Torque:
- 20 N*m{204 kgf*cm, 15 ft.*lbf}

39. INSTALL ENGINE OIL PRESSURE SWITCH ASSEMBLY |
Apply adhesive to 2 or 3 threads of the engine oil pressure switch assembly.
- Adhesive:
- TOYOTA Genuine Adhesive 1344, Three Bond 1344 or equivalent
- NOTICE:
- Do not let adhesive adhere to the oil hole.
Using a 24 mm deep socket wrench, install the engine oil pressure switch assembly.
- Torque:
- 15 N*m{153 kgf*cm, 11 ft.*lbf}
- NOTICE:
- Do not start the engine within 1 hour of installation.
Connect the engine oil pressure switch assembly connector.
40. INSTALL REAR ENGINE OIL SEAL RETAINER |
Clean and degrease the contact surfaces of the rear engine oil seal retainer and cylinder block sub-assembly.
Apply seal packing in a continuous bead as shown in the illustration.
- Seal packing:
- Toyota Genuine Seal Packing Black, Three Bond 1207B or equivalent
- Standard seal diameter:
- 2.0 to 3.0 mm (0.0787 to 0.118 in.)

41. INSTALL REAR ENGINE OIL SEAL |
Apply a light coat of MP grease to the lip of a new rear engine oil seal.
- NOTICE:
- Do not allow foreign matter to contact the lip of the rear engine oil seal.
- Do not allow MP grease to contact the dust seal.

Using SST and a hammer, tap in the rear engine oil seal until its surface is flush with the rear engine oil seal retainer edge.

Install a new gasket to the oil strainer sub-assembly.
Clean and degrease the contact surfaces of the oil pan sub-assembly and cylinder block sub-assembly.
Apply seal packing as shown in the illustration.
- Seal packing:
- Toyota Genuine Seal Packing Black, Three Bond 1207B or equivalent
- Standard seal diameter:
- 2.0 to 3.0 mm (0.0787 to 0.118 in.)

Install a new No. 1 camshaft bearing cap oil hole gasket to the cylinder head cover spacer.
Install a new gasket to the cylinder head cover sub-assembly.
Install the cylinder head cover sub-assembly, 2 plate washers and 2 seal washers with the 21 bolts and 2 nuts, and tighten the 21 bolts and 2 nuts in the sequence shown in the illustration.
- Torque:

Connect the PCV hose to the PCV valve sub-assembly and slide the clip to secure the hose.
52. INSTALL CAMSHAFT TIMING OIL CONTROL VALVE ASSEMBLY (for Exhaust Side) |
Apply a light coat of engine oil to a new O-ring and install the O-ring to the camshaft timing oil control valve assembly.
- NOTICE:
- Do not damage the O-ring when installing.
- HINT:
- An O-ring is already installed in a new camshaft timing oil control valve assembly. So, the O-ring only needs to be coated with engine oil when the assembly is replaced with a new one.
Install the camshaft timing oil control valve assembly to the cylinder head cover sub-assembly with the bolt.
- Torque:
- 9.0 N*m{92 kgf*cm, 80 in.*lbf}
- NOTICE:
- Replace with a new part if it is dropped or if it receives a strong impact.
- Make sure that the O-ring is not cracked or jammed when installing.
Connect the camshaft timing oil control valve connector.
53. INSTALL CAMSHAFT TIMING OIL CONTROL VALVE ASSEMBLY (for Intake Side) |
Apply a light coat of engine oil to a new O-ring and install the O-ring to the camshaft timing oil control valve assembly.
- NOTICE:
- Do not damage the O-ring when installing.
- HINT:
- An O-ring is already installed in a new camshaft timing oil control valve assembly. So, the O-ring only needs to be coated with engine oil when the assembly is replaced with a new one.
Install the camshaft timing oil control valve assembly to the cylinder head sub-assembly with the bolt.
- Torque:
- 9.0 N*m{92 kgf*cm, 80 in.*lbf}
- NOTICE:
- Replace with a new part if it is dropped or if it receives a strong impact.
- Make sure that the O-ring is not cracked or jammed when installing.
Connect the camshaft timing oil control valve connector.
Connect the wiring harness clamp bracket with the bolt.
- Torque:
- 8.0 N*m{82 kgf*cm, 71 in.*lbf}
Attach the 2 clamps and connect the 2 connectors.
54. INSTALL CRANKSHAFT POSITION SENSOR |
Apply a light coat of engine oil to the O-ring of the crankshaft position sensor.
Install the crankshaft position sensor with the bolt.
- Torque:
- 9.0 N*m{92 kgf*cm, 80 in.*lbf}
- NOTICE:
- When reusing the crankshaft position sensor, inspect the O-ring.
- Make sure that the O-ring is not cracked or jammed when installing the crankshaft position senor.
Connect the crankshaft position sensor connector and attach the wire harness clamp.
55. INSTALL CAMSHAFT POSITION SENSOR (for Exhaust Side) |
Apply a light coat of engine oil to the O-ring of the camshaft position sensor.
Install the camshaft position sensor with the bolt.
- Torque:
- 9.0 N*m{92 kgf*cm, 80 in.*lbf}
- NOTICE:
- When reusing the camshaft position sensor, inspect the O-ring.
- Make sure that the O-ring is not cracked or jammed when installing the camshaft position sensor.
Connect the camshaft position sensor connector.
56. INSTALL CAMSHAFT POSITION SENSOR (for Intake Side) |
Apply a light coat of engine oil to the O-ring of the camshaft position sensor.
Install the camshaft position sensor with the bolt.
- Torque:
- 9.0 N*m{92 kgf*cm, 80 in.*lbf}
- NOTICE:
- When reusing the camshaft position sensor, inspect the O-ring.
- Make sure that the O-ring is not cracked or jammed when installing the camshaft position sensor.
Connect the camshaft position sensor connector.
57. INSTALL PCV VALVE SUB-ASSEMBLY |
Apply adhesive to 2 or 3 threads of the valve.
- Adhesive:
- Toyota genuine adhesive 1324, three bond 1324 or equivalent
Using a 22 mm ball joint lock nut wrench, install the PCV valve.
- Torque:
- 5.0 N*m{51 kgf*cm, 44 in.*lbf}
- NOTICE:
- Use the formula to calculate special torque values for situations where a ball joint lock nut wrench is combined with a torque wrench (LandCruiser RM000003YMD00TX.html).
Connect the PCV hose.
58. INSTALL OIL FILLER CAP SUB-ASSEMBLY |
Install the gasket to the oil filler cap.
Install the oil filler cap.
59. INSTALL SPARK PLUG |
- HINT:
- Perform "Inspection After Repairs" after replacing the spark plug (LandCruiser RM000004NJC03XX.html).
Using a 16 mm spark plug wrench, install the 4 spark plugs.
