DESCRIPTION

Flat-type knock sensors (non-resonant type) have structures that can detect vibrations between approximately 5 kHz and 15 kHz.
A knock sensor is fitted onto the engine block to detect engine knocking.
The knock sensor contains a piezoelectric element which generates a voltage when it becomes deformed.
The voltage is generated when the engine block vibrates due to knocking. Any occurrence of engine knocking can be suppressed by delaying the ignition timing.

DTC No.
DTC Detection Condition
Trouble Area
P0327
P0332
The output voltage of the knock sensor is below 0.5 V (1 trip detection logic).
  1. Short in knock sensor circuit
  2. Knock sensor
  3. ECM
P0328
P0333
The output voltage of the knock sensor is higher than 4.5 V (1 trip detection logic).
  1. Open in knock sensor circuit
  2. Knock sensor
  3. ECM
HINT:
When DTC P0327, P0328, P0332 or P0333 is stored, the ECM enters fail-safe mode. During fail-safe mode, the ignition timing is delayed to its maximum retardation. The ECM continues fail-safe mode until the engine switch is turned off.

MONITOR DESCRIPTION

If the output voltage transmitted by the knock sensor remains low or high for more than 1 second, the ECM interprets this as a malfunction in the sensor circuit, and stores a DTC.
The monitor for DTCs P0327, P0328, P0332 and P0333 begins to run when 5 seconds have elapsed since the engine was started.
If the malfunction is not repaired successfully, DTC P0327, P0328, P0332 or P0333 is stored 5 seconds after the engine is next started.

INSPECTION PROCEDURE

HINT:
  1. DTCs P0327 and P0328 are for the bank 1 knock sensor circuit.
  2. DTCs P0332 and P0333 are for the bank 2 knock sensor circuit.
  3. Read freeze frame data using the GTS. Freeze frame data records the engine condition when malfunctions are detected. When troubleshooting, freeze frame data can help determine if the vehicle was moving or stationary, if the engine was warmed up or not, if the air fuel ratio was lean or rich, and other data from the time the malfunction occurred.

  1. Disconnect the Ch1 connector.

  1. Using lead wires, connect the connectors as follows:

Male Connector - Female Connector
Terminal 2 - Terminal 4
Terminal 5 - Terminal 6
Terminal 4 - Terminal 2
Terminal 6 - Terminal 5
  1. Warm up the engine.

  1. Run the engine at 3000 rpm for 10 seconds or more.

  1. Connect the GTS to the DLC3.

  1. Turn the GTS on.

  1. Enter the following menus: Powertrain / Engine and ECT / Trouble Codes.

  1. Read the DTCs.
