Refer to DTC P0010 (LandCruiser RM000000PDW0VKX_07.html).INSPECTION PROCEDURE
- HINT:
Abnormal Bank | Timing over-advanced (Valve Timing is Out of Specified Range) | Timing over-retarded (Valve Timing is Out of Specified Range) |
Bank 1 | P0011 | P0012 |
Bank 2 | P0021 | P0022 |
- DTC P0011, P0012, P0021 or P0022 may be stored when foreign objects in the engine oil are caught in some parts of the system. The DTC will remain stored even if the system returns to normal after a short time. Foreign objects are filtered out by the oil filter.
- If DTC P0011 or P0012 is output, check the right bank VVT system for the intake camshaft circuit (bank 1).
- Bank 1 refers to the bank that includes the No. 1 cylinder.
- If DTC P0021 or P0022 is output, check the left bank VVT system for the intake camshaft circuit (bank 2).
- Bank 2 refers to the bank that does not include the No. 1 cylinder.
- Read freeze frame data using the GTS. Freeze frame data records the engine condition when malfunctions are detected. When troubleshooting, freeze frame data can help determine if the vehicle was moving or stationary, if the engine was warmed up or not, if the air fuel ratio was lean or rich, and other data from the time the malfunction occurred.
1.CHECK FOR ANY OTHER DTCS OUTPUT (IN ADDITION TO DTC P0011, P0012, P0021 OR P0022) |
Connect the GTS to the DLC3.
Turn the engine switch on (IG) and turn the GTS on.
Enter the following menus: Powertrain / Engine and ECT / Trouble Codes.
Read the DTCs.
Result Result Proceed to P0011, P0012, P0021 or P0022 A P0011, P0012, P0021 or P0022 and other DTCs B - HINT:
- If any DTCs other than P0011, P0012, P0021 or P0022 are output, troubleshoot those DTCs first.

2.PERFORM ACTIVE TEST USING GTS (OPERATE OCV) |
Connect the GTS to the DLC3.
Start the engine and turn the GTS on.
Warm up the engine.
Enter the following menus: Powertrain / Engine and ECT / Active Test / Control the VVT System (Bank 1) or Control the VVT System (Bank 2).
Check the engine speed while operating the camshaft timing oil control valve assembly using the GTS.
- OK:
GTS Operation Specified Condition OCV OFF Normal engine speed OCV ON Engine idles roughly or stalls soon after camshaft timing oil control valve assembly switched from off to on

OK | |
3.CHECK WHETHER DTC OUTPUT RECURS (DTC P0011, P0012, P0021 OR P0022) |
Connect the GTS to the DLC3.
Turn the engine switch on (IG) and turn the GTS on.
Clear the DTCs (LandCruiser RM000000PDK1DIX.html).
Start the engine and warm it up.
Switch the ECM from normal mode to check mode using the GTS (LandCruiser RM000000PDL0Y3X.html).
Drive the vehicle for more than 10 minutes.
Read the DTCs using the GTS.
- OK:
- No DTC output.

4.CHECK VALVE TIMING (CHECK FOR LOOSE TEETH OR WHETHER TIMING CHAIN HAS JUMPED TOOTH) |
Remove the cylinder head cover sub-assembly RH and LH.
![]() |
Turn the crankshaft to align the matchmarks of the crankshaft.
Align the notch of the crankshaft pulley to the "0" position.
Check if the timing marks of the camshaft pulley and camshaft bearing cap align.
Text in Illustration *a Timing Mark
Turn the crankshaft clockwise 360° if the timing marks do not align. Check if they align once again.
- OK:
- The timing marks of the camshaft pulley and camshaft bearing cap align when the notch of the crankshaft pulley is in the "0" position.
Reinstall the cylinder head cover sub-assembly RH and LH.

OK | |
5.INSPECT CAMSHAFT TIMING OIL CONTROL VALVE ASSEMBLY (FOR INTAKE SIDE OF BANK 1, 2) |
Inspect the camshaft timing oil control valve assembly (for Intake Side of Bank 1, 2) (LandCruiser RM000000Q7405AX_01_0001.html).
|
| ||||
OK | |
6.INSPECT OIL CONTROL VALVE FILTER AND OIL PIPE |
Remove the No. 1 oil pipe or No. 2 oil pipe.
![]() |
Remove the oil control valve filter RH or oil control valve filter LH.
Check that the oil control valve filter and oil pipe are not clogged.
- OK:
- The oil control valve filter and oil pipe are not clogged.
Text in Illustration *A Bank 2 *B Bank 1
Reinstall the oil control valve filter RH or oil control valve filter LH.
Reinstall the No. 1 oil pipe or No. 2 oil pipe.

OK | |
7.REPLACE CAMSHAFT TIMING GEAR ASSEMBLY |
Replace the camshaft timing gear assembly (LandCruiser RM000003B6X01KX.html).
- HINT:
- for Automatic Transmission
- Perform "Inspection After Repair" after replacing the camshaft timing gear assembly (LandCruiser RM000004NJC03SX.html).

8.CHECK WHETHER DTC OUTPUT RECURS |
Connect the GTS to the DLC3.
Turn the engine switch on (IG) and turn the GTS on.
Clear the DTCs (LandCruiser RM000000PDK1DIX.html).
Start the engine and warm it up.
Switch the ECM from normal mode to check mode using the GTS (LandCruiser RM000000PDL0Y3X.html).
Drive the vehicle for more than 10 minutes.
Read output DTCs using the GTS.
- OK:
- No DTC output.
- HINT:
- DTC P0011, P0012, P0021 or P0022 is output when foreign objects in engine oil are caught in some parts of the system. These codes will stay stored even if the system returns to normal after a short time. These foreign objects are then captured by the oil filter, thus eliminating the source of the problem.
