DESCRIPTION

The EGR actuator is operated by the ECM and opens and closes the EGR valve using gears. The opening angle of the EGR valve is detected by the EGR position sensor, which is mounted on the EGR body.

P0489
DTC Detection Drive Pattern
DTC Detection Condition
Trouble Area
Idle the engine for 5 seconds or more
The EGR actuator current is below 0.5 A for 2.0 seconds during EGR valve operation.
(1 trip detection logic)
  1. Open or short in electric EGR control valve assembly circuit
  2. Electric EGR control valve assembly
  3. ECM

P0490
DTC Detection Drive Pattern
DTC Detection Condition
Trouble Area
Idle the engine for 5 seconds or more
An EGR actuator current of 8 A or higher due to a mechanical malfunction, or the ECM internal circuit temperature of 150 to 160°C (302 to 320°F) or higher is detected.
(1 trip detection logic)
  1. Open or short in electric EGR control valve assembly circuit
  2. Electric EGR control valve assembly
  3. ECM

Refer to DTC P042E (HILUX_TGN26 RM000004KMK00FX_03.html).

INSPECTION PROCEDURE

NOTICE:
After replacing the ECM, the new ECM needs registration (HILUX_TGN26 RM0000012XK05AX.html) and initialization (HILUX_TGN26 RM000000TIN058X.html).
HINT:
Read freeze frame data using the GTS. Freeze frame data records the engine condition when malfunctions are detected. When troubleshooting, freeze frame data can help determine if the vehicle was moving or stationary, if the engine was warmed up or not, and other data from the time the malfunction occurred.
1.INSPECT ELECTRIC EGR VALVE ASSEMBLY
  1. Inspect the electric EGR valve assembly (HILUX_TGN26 RM000003TCI00IX.html).

NG
Go to step 4
OK

2.CHECK HARNESS AND CONNECTOR (ELECTRIC EGR VALVE ASSEMBLY - ECM)
  1. Disconnect the electric EGR valve assembly connector.

  1. Disconnect the ECM connector.

  1. Measure the resistance according to the value(s) in the table below.

    Standard Resistance:

    Tester Connection
    Condition
    Specified Condition
    C120-4 (M+) - C164-1 (EGM+)
    Always
    Below 1 Ω
    C120-5 (M-) - C164-2 (EGM-)
    Always
    Below 1 Ω
    C120-4 (M+) or C164-1 (EGM+) - Body ground
    Always
    10 kΩ or higher
    C120-5 (M-) or C164-2 (EGM-) - Body ground
    Always
    10 kΩ or higher
  1. Reconnect the electric EGR valve assembly connector.

  1. Reconnect the ECM connector.

NG
Go to step 5
OK

3.REPLACE ECM
  1. Replace the ECM (HILUX_TGN26 RM0000013Z001IX.html).

NEXT
Go to step 6

4.REPLACE ELECTRIC EGR VALVE ASSEMBLY
  1. Replace the electric EGR valve assembly (HILUX_TGN26 RM000004QWK009X.html).

NEXT
Go to step 6

5.REPAIR OR REPLACE HARNESS OR CONNECTOR
  1. Repair or replace the harness or connector.

NEXT

6.CONFIRM WHETHER MALFUNCTION HAS BEEN SUCCESSFULLY REPAIRED
  1. Connect the GTS to the DLC3.

  1. Clear the DTCs (HILUX_TGN26 RM000000PDK0X4X.html).

  1. Turn the ignition switch off for 30 seconds or more.

  1. Start the engine.

  1. Idle the engine for 5 seconds or more.

  1. Enter the following menus: Powertrain / Engine / Trouble Codes.

  1. Confirm that the DTC is not output again.
