Description DTC P0335 P0339

The Crankshaft Position (CKP) sensor system consists of a CKP sensor plate and a pickup coil.

The sensor plate has 34 teeth and is installed on the crankshaft. The pickup coil is made of wound copper wire, an iron core and magnet. The sensor plate rotates and, as each tooth passes by the pickup coil, a pulse signal is created. The pickup coil generates 34 signals per revolution. Based on these signals, the ECM calculates the crankshaft position and engine speed. Using these calculations, the fuel injection time and ignition timing are controlled.

DTC Code DTC Detection Condition Trouble Area
P0335 When either condition below is met:
  1. No Crankshaft Position (CKP) sensor signal is sent to the ECM while cranking (1 trip detection logic).
  2. No CKP sensor signal is sent to the ECM at an engine speed of 600 rpm or more (1 trip detection logic).
  1. Open or short in Crankshaft Position (CKP) sensor circuit
  2. CKP sensor
  3. Crankshaft (crank angle sensor plate)
  4. ECM
P0339 Under conditions (a), (b) and (c), no CKP sensor signal is sent to the ECM for 0.05 seconds or more (1 trip detection logic): (a) The engine speed is 1000 rpm or more. (b) The starter signal is off. (c) 3 seconds or more have elapsed since the starter signal switched from on to off.
  1. Open or short in CKP sensor circuit
  2. CKP sensor
  3. Crankshaft (crank angle sensor plate)
  4. ECM
  1. Description DTC P0335 P0339 Land Cruiser 1GR-FE Reference: Inspection using an oscilloscope.

    HINT:

    1. The correct waveform is as shown.
    2. VV1+ and VV2+ stand for the VVT sensor signal, and NE+ stands for the CKP sensor signal.
    3. Grounding failure of the shielded wire may cause noise in the waveforms.
    Item Content
    Terminal VV1+ - VV1- VV2+ - VV2- NE+ - NE-
    Equipment Setting 5 V/DIV., 20 msec./DIV.
    Condition Cranking or idling

Monitor description

If there is no signal from the CKP sensor despite the engine running, the ECM interprets this as a malfunction of the sensor.

If the malfunction is not repaired successfully, a DTC is stored 10 seconds after the engine is next started.

Inspection procedure

HINT:

  1. Check the engine speed. The engine speed can be checked by using the intelligent tester. To check, follow the operation below:
    1. Connect the intelligent tester to the DLC3.
    2. Start the engine.
    3. Turn the tester on.
    4. Enter the following menus: Powertrain / Engine and ECT / Data List / All Data / Engine Speed.
    1. The engine speed may be indicated as zero despite the engine running normally. This is caused by a lack of NE signals from the Crankshaft Position (CKP) sensor. Alternatively, the engine speed may be indicated as lower than the actual engine speed if the CKP sensor output voltage is insufficient.
  2. Read freeze frame data using the intelligent tester. Freeze frame data records the engine condition when malfunctions are detected. When troubleshooting, freeze frame data can help determine if the vehicle was moving or stationary, if the engine was warmed up or not, if the air fuel ratio was lean or rich, and other data from the time the malfunction occurred.

1.READ VALUE USING INTELLIGENT TESTER (ENGINE SPEED)
  1. Connect the intelligent tester to the DLC3.

  1. Turn the ignition switch to ON.

  1. Turn the tester on.

  1. Enter the following menus: Powertrain / Engine and ECT / Data List / All Data / Engine Speed.

  1. Start the engine.

  1. Read the values displayed on the tester while the engine is running.

    OK:

    Correct values are displayed.

    HINT:

    1. To check the engine speed change, display the graph on the tester.
    2. If the engine does not start, check the engine speed while cranking.
    3. If the engine speed indicated on the tester remains at zero (0), there may be an open or short in the Crankshaft Position (CKP) sensor circuit.

2.INSPECT CRANKSHAFT POSITION SENSOR (RESISTANCE)

Disconnect the Crankshaft Position (CKP) sensor connector. DTC P0335 P0339 Land Cruiser 1GR-FE

  1. Disconnect the Crankshaft Position (CKP) sensor connector.

  1. Measure the resistance according to the value(s) in the table below.
