DTC P0516 P0517 2AD-FHV

DTC P0516 Battery Temperature Sensor Circuit Low

DTC P0517 Battery Temperature Sensor Circuit High

Description

The battery current sensor is installed on the battery negative terminal to detect battery temperature.
A thermistor is integrated into the battery current sensor, and the resistance of the thermistor in the battery current sensor changes according to the battery temperature.
The resistance of the thermistor in the battery current sensor decreases as the battery temperature increases. The resistance increases as the temperature decreases.
The battery current sensor is connected to the ECM. The ECM supplies 5 V from the THB terminal to the battery current sensor through resistor R.
The battery current sensor and resistor R are connected in series. This results in changes in the voltage supplied from the THB terminal when the resistance changes according to the battery temperature.
The ECM determines the battery temperature according to changes of voltage. When the battery temperature is high, the ECM determines to reduce the amount of current supplied from the generator in order to protect the battery.

Inspection procedure

NOTICE:

After replacing the ECM, the new ECM needs registration and initialization.

HINT:

If DTCs relating to different systems are output, and they share terminal E2 as their ground, check this ground circuit first.

1.INSPECT BATTERY CURRENT SENSOR

Inspect battery current sensor

  1. Disconnect the B31 battery current sensor connector.

  2. Measure the resistance of the battery current sensor.

    Standard resistance:

    Tester Connection Condition Specified Condition
    B31-1 (THB) - B31-4 (E2) 20 to 30°C (68 to 86°F) 1.5 to 2.5 k?

  3. Reconnect the battery current sensor connector.

  NG
REPLACE BATTERY CURRENT

OK

2.CHECK WIRE HARNESS (BATTERY CURRENT SENSOR - ECM)

Check wire harness (battery current sensor - ecm)

  1. Disconnect the B31 battery current sensor connector.

  2. Disconnect the B32 ECM connector.

  3. Measure the resistance of the wire harness side connectors.

    Standard resistance:

    Tester Connection Specified Condition
    B31-1 (THB) - B32-115 (THB) Below 1 ?
    B31-4 (E2) - B32-93 (EIB) Below 1 ?
    B31-1 (THB) or B32-115 (THB) - Body ground 10 k? or higher
    B31-4 (E2) or B32-93 (EIB) - Body ground 10 k? or higher

  4. Reconnect the battery current sensor connector.

  5. Reconnect the ECM connector.

  NG
REPAIR OR REPLACE HARNESS AND CONNECTOR

OK

REPLACE ECM
