DISCONNECT CABLE FROM NEGATIVE BATTERY TERMINAL (w/ Front Seat Side Airbag)
REMOVE REAR WHEELS
REMOVE FRONT SEAT ASSEMBLY LH (for Manual Seat)
REMOVE FRONT SEAT ASSEMBLY LH (for Power Seat)
REMOVE FRONT SEAT ASSEMBLY RH
REMOVE CONSOLE BOX ASSEMBLY
REMOVE NO. 2 BELT ANCHOR REINFORCEMENT SUB-ASSEMBLY
REMOVE NO. 3 BELT ANCHOR REINFORCEMENT SUB-ASSEMBLY
SEPARATE PARKING BRAKE EQUALIZER
REMOVE PARKING BRAKE LEVER ASSEMBLY
REMOVE PARKING BRAKE EQUALIZER
REMOVE PARKING BRAKE CABLE END STOPPER
REMOVE NO. 1 PARKING BRAKE CABLE ASSEMBLY

Parking Brake Cable (For Rear Drum Brake) -- Removal |
- CAUTION:
- Some of these service operations affect the SRS airbag system. Read the precautionary notices concerning the SRS airbag system before servicing (COROLLA_ZRE142 RM000000KT10H0X.html).
- HINT:
- Use the same procedure for the No. 2 parking brake cable assembly and No. 3 parking brake cable assembly.
- The procedure listed below is for the No. 3 parking brake cable assembly.
1. DISCONNECT CABLE FROM NEGATIVE BATTERY TERMINAL (w/ Front Seat Side Airbag) |
- CAUTION:
- Wait at least 90 seconds after disconnecting the cable from the negative (-) battery terminal to disable the SRS system.
3. REMOVE FRONT SEAT ASSEMBLY LH (for Manual Seat) |
- HINT:
- Refer to the instructions for Removal of the front seat assembly (Link).
4. REMOVE FRONT SEAT ASSEMBLY LH (for Power Seat) |
- HINT:
- Refer to the instructions for Removal of the front seat assembly (COROLLA_ZRE142 RM000000AR902OX.html).
5. REMOVE FRONT SEAT ASSEMBLY RH |
- HINT:
- Perform the same procedure for the LH side.
6. REMOVE CONSOLE BOX ASSEMBLY |
- HINT:
- Refer to the instructions for Removal of the front console box (COROLLA_ZRE142 RM000002XV501QX.html).
7. REMOVE NO. 2 BELT ANCHOR REINFORCEMENT SUB-ASSEMBLY |
Remove the 4 bolts and No. 2 belt anchor reinforcement sub-assembly.
8. REMOVE NO. 3 BELT ANCHOR REINFORCEMENT SUB-ASSEMBLY |
Turn back the floor carpet, and remove the 5 bolts and No. 3 belt anchor reinforcement sub-assembly.
9. SEPARATE PARKING BRAKE EQUALIZER |
Remove the lock nut and loosen the adjusting nut.
Separate the parking brake equalizer from the No. 3 parking brake cable assembly as shown in the illustration.
Separate the parking brake equalizer from the No. 2 parking brake cable assembly.
- HINT:
- Perform the same procedure for the No. 3 parking brake cable assembly.
10. REMOVE PARKING BRAKE LEVER ASSEMBLY |
Disconnect the parking brake switch connector.
Remove the 2 bolts and parking brake lever assembly.
11. REMOVE PARKING BRAKE EQUALIZER |
Disengage the 2 claws to separate the parking brake cable end stopper from the No. 1 parking brake cable assembly.
Disengage the 2 claws to remove the parking brake equalizer from the parking brake cable end stopper.
12. REMOVE PARKING BRAKE CABLE END STOPPER |
Remove the parking brake cable end stopper from the No. 1 parking brake cable assembly.
13. REMOVE NO. 1 PARKING BRAKE CABLE ASSEMBLY |
Remove the adjusting nut.
Pull up the parking brake lever claw.
Remove the No. 1 parking brake cable assembly.
14. REMOVE FRONT EXHAUST PIPE ASSEMBLY |
Disconnect the heated oxygen sensor connector.
Remove the 4 bolts and 4 compression springs.
Remove the front exhaust pipe assembly from the 2 exhaust pipe supports.
Remove the 2 gaskets.
15. REMOVE FRONT NO. 1 FLOOR HEAT INSULATOR |
Remove the 3 nuts and front No. 1 floor heat insulator.
16. REMOVE FRONT NO. 2 FLOOR HEAT INSULATOR |
Remove the 2 nuts and front No. 2 floor heat insulator.
17. REMOVE REAR BRAKE DRUM |
Release the parking brake and remove the rear brake drum.
- HINT:
- If the rear brake drum cannot be removed easily, perform the following procedure.
Remove the shoe adjusting hole plug and insert a screwdriver through the hole into the backing plate, and hold the automatic adjust lever away from the adjuster.
Using another screwdriver, contract the brake shoe by turning the adjusting bolt.
18. REMOVE REAR BRAKE SHOE (for Front Side) |
Using SST, separate the shoe return spring from the rear brake shoe.

- NOTICE:
- Do not damage the wheel cylinder boot.
Using SST, remove the 2 shoe hold down spring cups, shoe hold down spring, pin and rear brake shoe.

Remove the tension spring.
19. REMOVE REAR BRAKE STRUT SET |
Remove the shoe return spring from the rear brake shoe and remove the rear brake shoe strut set.
20. REMOVE REAR BRAKE SHOE (for Rear Side) |
Using SST, remove the 2 shoe hold down spring cups, shoe hold down spring, pin and rear brake shoe.

Using needle-nose pliers, separate the parking brake cable.
21. REMOVE NO. 3 PARKING BRAKE CABLE ASSEMBLY |
Disengage the clamp from the No. 3 parking brake cable assembly.
Remove the bolt.
Remove the bolt and separate the No. 3 parking brake cable assembly from the backing plate.
Separate the No. 3 parking brake cable clamp.
Remove the bolt and pull out the No. 3 parking brake cable assembly to the outside of the body.
Remove the 2 bolts and the No. 3 parking brake cable assembly.
22. REMOVE NO. 3 PARKING BRAKE CABLE CLAMP |
Disengage the 2 claws to remove the No. 3 parking brake cable clamp from the No. 3 parking brake cable assembly.
