DESCRIPTION

The MIL (Malfunction Indicator Lamp) is used to indicate vehicle malfunction detections by the ECM. By turning the ignition switch to the ON position, power is supplied to the MIL circuit, and the ECM provides the circuit ground which illuminates the MIL.
The MIL operation can be checked visually: When the ignition switch is first turned to the ON position, the MIL illuminates and then goes off. If the MIL remains illuminated or is not illuminated, conduct the following troubleshooting procedure using an intelligent tester.

INSPECTION PROCEDURE

1.CHECK MIL CONDITION
  1. Perform troubleshooting in accordance with the chart below.

    Result:
    MIL Condition
    Proceed to
    MIL remains ON
    A
    MIL does not illuminate

2.CHECK WHETHER MIL TURNS OFF
  1. Connect the intelligent tester to the DLC3.

  1. Turn the ignition switch to the ON position.

  1. Turn the tester on.

  1. Check whether any DTCs have been stored (See page Нажмите здесь). Note them down if necessary.

  1. Clear the DTCs (See page Нажмите здесь).

  1. Check if the MIL goes off.

    OK:
    The MIL goes off.

3.CHECK HARNESS AND CONNECTOR

  1. Disconnect the ECM connector.

  1. Turn the ignition switch to the ON position.

  1. Check that MIL is not illuminated.

    OK:
    The MIL is not illuminated.
  1. Reconnect the ECM connector.

4.CHECK HARNESS AND CONNECTOR (ECM - COMBINATION METER)

  1. Disconnect the ECM connector.

  1. Disconnect the combination meter connector.

  1. Measure the resistance according to the value(s) in the table below.

    Standard resistance:
    Tester Connection
    Condition
    Specified Condition
    A57-23 (W) or E46-20 (EFI) - Body ground
    Always
    10 kΩ or higher
  1. Reconnect the ECM connector.

  1. Reconnect the combination meter connector.

5.CHECK THAT MIL IS ILLUMINATED
  1. Check if the MIL illuminates when turning the ignition switch to the ON position.

    MIL illuminates.
