DTC P0821 Gear Lever "X" Position Circuit


DESCRIPTION

Based on the signal from the transmission shift main switch, the TCM detects whether the shift lever position is in the E or M position. If the shift lever position switch is ON despite the shift lever position being N or R, the TCM sets the DTC.

(1-trip detection logic)
  1. Shift lever position is in N or R
  2. MSDW signal is ON for 1.0 second
  1. Transmission shift main switch (built into shift lever assembly)
  2. Short in MDSW signal circuit
  3. TCM

1.INSPECT SHIFT LOCK CONTROL UNIT ASSEMBLY

  1. Disconnect the shift lock control unit connector.

  1. Check the resistance when changing the shift lever position.

    Standard resistance:
    Tester Connection
    Shift Lever Position
    Specified Condition
    E31-4 (MDSW) - E31-8 (GND)
    R, N or E
    10 kΩ or higher
    E31-4 (MDSW) - E31-8 (GND)
    M, + or -
    Below 1 Ω
  1. Reconnect the shift lock control unit connector.

2.CHECK HARNESS AND CONNECTOR (SHIFT LOCK CONTROL UNIT - TCM)

  1. Disconnect the shift lock control unit connector.

  1. Disconnect the TCM connector.

  1. Measure the resistance according to the value(s) in the table below.

    Standard resistance:
    Tester Connection
    Condition
    Specified Condition
    E33-10 (MDSW) - E31-4 (MDSW)
    Always
    Below 1 Ω
    E33-10 (MDSW) - Body ground

    10 kΩ or higher
  1. Reconnect the shift lock control unit connector.

  1. Reconnect the TCM connector.
