DTC P0115 Engine Coolant Temperature Circuit Malfunction

DTC P0116 Engine Coolant Temperature Circuit Range / Performance Problem


DESCRIPTION

A thermistor, whose resistance value varies according to the engine coolant temperature, is built into the engine coolant temperature sensor.
The structure of the sensor and its connection to the ECM are the same as those of the intake air temperature sensor.
УКАЗАНИЕ:
  1. When the engine coolant temperature sensor output is outside the normal range, the ECM determines this as a malfunction.
  2. If DTC P0115 or P0116 is detected, the ECM performs engine control using an estimated engine coolant temperature calculated from the intake air temperature and the intake air volume at the time of engine start.

  1. When engine coolant temperature is less than 35°C (95°F) at engine start, engine coolant temperature change in 240 seconds is less than 1°C (1.8°F) on the engine coolant temperature sensor while the engine is highly loaded
    (The MIL is illuminated and a DTC is set when the same malfunction is detected on 2 consecutive trips*)
  2. When engine coolant temperature is more than 98°C (208°F) at engine start, engine coolant temperature sensor shows a change of less than 3°C (5.4°F) in 240 seconds while the engine load that is equal to that when the engine is idling
    (The MIL is illuminated and a DTC is set when the same malfunction is detected on 6 consecutive trips*)
    *: One trip is counted when the ignition switch is turned from off to the ON position and back to off

УКАЗАНИЕ:
  1. When DTC P0115 or P0116 is detected, check the engine coolant temperature by selecting the following menu items on an intelligent tester: Powertrain / Engine and ECT / Data List / Coolant Temp.
  2. DTC P0115 is set when the engine idles for approximately 15 seconds.
  3. DTC P0116 is set when the vehicle idles for more than 5 minutes after driving at a vehicle speed of 100 to 120 km/h (62 to 75 mph) for more than 5 minutes.

INSPECTION PROCEDURE

УКАЗАНИЕ:
Read freeze frame data using an intelligent tester. The ECM records vehicle and driving condition information as freeze frame data the moment a DTC is stored. When troubleshooting, freeze frame data can be helpful in determining whether the vehicle was running or stopped, whether the engine was warmed up or not, whether the air fuel ratio was lean or rich, as well as other data recorded at the time of a malfunction.
1.READ OUTPUT DTCS (DTC P0115 AND/OR P0116)
  1. Connect the intelligent tester to the DLC3.

  1. Turn the ignition switch to the ON position.

  1. Turn the tester on.

  1. Enter the following menu items: Powertrain / Engine and ECT / DTC.

  1. Read the DTCs.

2.READ VALUE USING INTELLIGENT TESTER (ENGINE COOLANT TEMPERATURE)
  1. Connect the intelligent tester to the DLC3.

  1. Turn the ignition switch to the ON position.

  1. Turn the tester on.

  1. Enter the following menu items: Powertrain / Engine and ECT / Data List / Coolant Temp.

  1. Read the value.

    Standard:
    80°C to 100°C (176°F to 212°F) with warm engine.
    Result:

    УКАЗАНИЕ:

  1. Enter the following menu items: Powertrain / Engine and ECT / Data List / Coolant Temp.

  1. Read the value.

    Standard:
    140°C (284°F) or higher.
  1. Reconnect the engine coolant temperature sensor connector.
