Emission Control System -- On-Vehicle Inspection

HINT:
In a malfunction where the EGR system is always on, black or white smoke may be emitted from the exhaust pipe.

1. CHECK SEATING OF EGR VALVE
  1. Start the engine, and then check that the engine starts and runs at idle.

2. CHECK ENGINE CONDITION
  1. Connect the GTS to the DLC3.

  1. Start the engine, then run it at idle.

  1. Turn the GTS on.

  1. Warm up the engine.

    HINT:
The coolant temperature should be between 75°C (167°F) and 90°C (194°F).
  1. Enter the following menus: Powertrain / Engine and ECT / Data List / Actual EGR Valve Pos. or Actual EGR Valve Pos. #2.

  1. Check that the value of the EGR angle is within the specification.

    Standard Percentage:
    Engine Condition
EGR Valve Opening Angle Expressed as Percentage
    During idling
    0 to 65%
If the result is not as specified, refer to the EGR valve inspection procedures (Click here).
  1. Turn the ignition switch off.

3. CHECK EGR VALVE OPERATION
  1. Turn the ignition switch to ON.

  1. Turn the GTS on.

  1. Enter the following menus: Powertrain / Engine and ECT / Active Test / Control the EGR step position or Control the EGR step position #2.

  1. Check the Data List / Actual EGR Valve Pos. or Actual EGR Valve Pos. #2 reading.

    HINT:
Make sure the EGR valve opening angle changes according to the Active Test operation.
    Standard Percentage:
    Control Range Condition
    Specified Condition
Active Test performed (Set EGR position to 100%)
EGR Valve Angle: 73 to 100%
Active Test performed (Set EGR position to 0%)
EGR Valve Angle: 0 to 27%

4. CHECK MAF AMOUNT
  1. Start the engine, then run it at idle.

  1. Warm up the engine.

    HINT:
The coolant temperature should be between 75°C (167°F) and 90°C (194°F).
  1. Turn the GTS on.

  1. Enter the following menus: Powertrain / Engine and ECT / Data List / MAF.

  1. Check the MAF reading.

  1. Enter the following menus: Powertrain / Engine and ECT / Active Test / Activate the EGR valve close.

    HINT:
    1. In the Active Test, the EGR valve of bank 1 and bank 2 cannot be operated at the same time.
    2. In the Active Test, the change in the MAF amount is difficult to check because the EGR valve can only be operated one bank at a time. Therefore, use the value below as a reference and check that the MAF amount changes.
    Standard (Reference):
    Engine Condition
    Active Test Condition
    MAF Reading
    Idling
Active Test performed (Set EGR position to 0%)
    Air flow amount changes
    (Approximately 6.6 to 26.5 g/sec.)

5. VISUALLY INSPECT HOSES, CONNECTIONS AND GASKETS

    Land Cruiser. Urj200, 202 Grj200 Vdj200
  1. Visually check that the hoses, connections and gaskets have no cracks, leaks or damage.

    NOTICE:
    1. Detachment or other problems with the engine oil dipstick, filler cap, PCV hose and other components may cause the engine to run improperly.
    1. Air suction caused by disconnections, looseness or cracks in the parts of the air induction system between the throttle body and cylinder head will cause engine failure or engine malfunctions.
If the result is not as specified, replace parts as necessary.

  1. w/ DPF:
Check if the differential pressure sensor hoses are connected incorrectly, disconnected, leaking, cracked or otherwise damaged.

6. PERFORM DPF FORCIBLE REGENERATION PROCEDURE (w/ DPF)
  1. Disconnect the cable from the negative (-) battery terminal or remove the EFI MAIN fuse for 1 minute or more.

    HINT:
    1. If the MIL is illuminated, first clear the DTCs using the GTS, and then initialize the value for the amount of particulate matter recorded by the ECM by disconnecting the cable from the negative (-) battery terminal or removing the EFI MAIN fuse. Otherwise, forced DPF regeneration cannot be performed using the Active Test.
    2. If the MIL is not illuminated, proceed to the next step, as initialization is not necessary.
  1. Connect the GTS to the DLC3.

  1. Start the engine and idle it until the engine coolant temperature reaches 70°C (158°F) or higher.

  1. Move the shift lever to P and set the parking brake.

  1. Turn the GTS on.

  1. Enter the following menus: Powertrain / Engine and ECT / Active Test / Activate the DPF Rejuvenate (PM).

    CAUTION:
Before performing the Active Test, make sure that there are no combustible materials around the DPF and tailpipe.
    NOTICE:
If the ambient temperature is 30°C (86°F) or higher, the DPF and surrounding area become very hot. Use a fan, etc. to cool the exhaust gas temperature sensors, air-fuel ratio sensor and surrounding areas.
    HINT:
    1. The engine speed differs depending on the ambient temperature.
    2. The engine speed increases during the Active Test and the engine speed returns to idle when the Active Test is completed.
    3. The time it takes to complete the Active Test varies depending on the PM volume stored. However, it usually takes approximately 15 to 40 minutes to complete the Active Test.
    4. Do not cancel the Active Test unless absolutely necessary.
    5. If the Active Test needs to be canceled, depress the accelerator pedal and race the engine to cancel the process. Even if the Active Test is stopped before it finishes, "Compl(complete) for DPNR/DPF Status Reju(PM)" is displayed on the GTS. If the Active Test is canceled, it must be performed again.
    6. If the differential pressure value increases too much during the Active Test, the fail-safe function activates and the Active Test is stopped.
    7. It may not be possible to perform the Active Test when the ambient temperature is extremely low or the elevation is extremely high. In this case, perform the Active Test indoors (with the tailpipe pointed towards the outside) or drive the vehicle at a speed of approximately 60 km/h (37 mph) or more for approximately 20 minutes to perform regeneration.
    8. Depending on various conditions, the Active Test may not be completed within 15 minutes. If 60 minutes elapse, the system determines that forced regeneration is impossible, stops the Active Test and illuminates the MIL. If this happens, perform troubleshooting according to the troubleshooting procedure (Click here).
    9. DPF forcible regeneration stops once the PM volume drops to 60 percent.
    10. In either of the following cases, turn the air conditioner on and perform forced regeneration:
      1. The engine speed fluctuates within the range of 1600 to 2000 rpm.
      2. Regeneration does not end (the engine speed does not return to the idle speed of 600 rpm) within 30 minutes.
