CHECK ECM TERMINAL VOLTAGE (GREL TERMINAL)

INSPECT GLOW PLUG RELAY

INSPECT GLOW FUSE

INSPECT GLOW PLUG ASSEMBLY (RESISTANCE)

CHECK GLOW PLUG ASSEMBLY (INSTALLATION)

CHECK WIRE HARNESS (GLOW PLUG RELAY- GLOW PLUG - BATTERY AND BODY GROUND)

CHECK WIRE HARNESS (GLOW PLUG RELAY - ECM AND BODY GROUND)

DESCRIPTION

УКАЗАНИЕ:

1. These troubleshooting procedures are for: 1) difficult starting engine in cold weather, and 2) difficulty driving / vehicle malfunctions in cold weather immediately after engine is started.
   
2. After the engine is started, the ECM performs an "after-glow" for a certain period of time. In proportion to the actual engine coolant temperature, the time period varies. The after-glow reduces diesel engine knocking, white smoke emissions and engine noises when the engine is cold.

INSPECTION PROCEDURE

ПРИМЕЧАНИЕ:

After replacing the ECM, the new ECM needs registration (see page RAV4_ACA30 RM000000TJ4007X.html) and initialization (see page RAV4_ACA30 RM000000TIN007X.html).

1. Remove the B43 glow plug relay.
   

2. Turn the ignition switch on (IG) and turn the tester ON.
   

3. Measure the voltage of the wire harness side connector.
   

   Standard voltage:

   Tester Connection	Specified Condition
   B43-2 - Body ground	9 to 14 V

4. Reinstall the glow plug relay.
   

1. Remove the B43 glow plug relay.
   

2. Measure the resistance of the relay.
   

   Standard resistance:

   Tester Connection	Specified Condition
   3 - 4	10 kΩ or higher
   3 - 4	Below 1 Ω (when battery voltage is applied to terminals 1 and 2)

3. Reinstall the glow plug relay.
   

1. Remove the GLOW fuse from the engine room No. 1 relay block.
   

2. Measure the resistance of the fuse.
   

   Standard resistance:

   Below 1 Ω
   

3. Reinstall the GLOW fuse.
   

1. Disconnect the glow plug wire.
   

2. Measure the resistance of the glow plugs.
   

   Standard resistance:

   Tester Connection	Condition	Specified Condition
   Glow plug terminal - Body ground	20°C (68°F)	Approximately 0.95 Ω

   УКАЗАНИЕ:

   If any of the glow plugs has an open circuit, the engine power will be insufficient only when the engine is cold.

   ПРИМЕЧАНИЕ:

   1. Exercise extreme care not to damage the glow plug pipes. Damaging them could cause an open circuit, or shorten the life of the glow plugs.
      
   2. Keep the glow plugs free of oil and fuel while cleaning.
      
   3. Wipe any oil off of the terminal and Bakelite washer with a clean, dry cloth during inspection.
      
   4. Do not apply more than 11 V to the glow plugs as it may cause an open circuit.
      

3. Reconnect the glow plug wire.
   

1. Check the glow plug installation.
   

   OK:

   Glow plugs are installed securely.

1. Remove the B43 glow plug relay.
   

2. Disconnect the B49 glow plug connector.
   

3. Measure the resistance of the wire harness side connector.
   

   Standard resistance:

   Tester Connection	Specified Condition
   B43-3 - B49-1	Below 1 Ω
   B43-4 - Positive (+) battery terminal cabled	Below 1 Ω
   B43-1 - Body ground	Below 1 Ω

4. Reinstall the glow plug relay.
   

5. Reconnect the ECM connector.
   

1. Remove the B43 glow plug relay.
   

2. Disconnect the B32 ECM connector.
   

3. Measure the resistance of the wire harness side connectors.
   

   Standard resistance:

   Tester Connection	Specified Condition
   B43-2 - B32-56 (GREL)	Below 1 Ω
   B32-56 (GREL) - Body ground	10 kΩ or higher

4. Reinstall the glow plug relay.
   

5. Reconnect the ECM connector.
