DTC P0116 Engine Coolant Temperature Circuit Range / Performance Problem |
DESCRIPTION
A thermistor is built into the engine coolant temperature sensor and it changes its resistance value according to the engine coolant temperature. The structure of the sensor and connection to the ECM is the same as that of the intake air temperature sensor.P0116DTC Detection Drive Pattern
| DTC Detection Condition
| Trouble Area
|
With the engine coolant temperature below 60°C (140°F), start the engine and idle it for 5 minutes. Then drive the vehicle at a speed of 40 km/h (25 mph) or more for a total of 5 minutes or more and check that the engine coolant temperature changes by 1°C (1.8°F) or more.
| When engine is started cold and warmed up, the engine coolant temperature sensor value does not change (2 trip detection logic).
| - Thermostat
- Engine coolant temperature sensor
|
After the warmed up engine is stopped and the next cold engine start is performed, the engine coolant temperature sensor value does not change (2 trip detection logic)

- HINT:
- If DTC P0116 is stored, the following symptoms may appear:
- Misfire
- Combustion noise
- Black smoke
- White smoke
- Lack of power
MONITOR DESCRIPTION
- Engine coolant temperature sensor cold start monitor
When a cold engine start is performed and then the engine is warmed up, if the engine coolant temperature sensor value does not change, it is determined that a malfunction has occurred. If this is detected in 2 consecutive driving cycles, the MIL is illuminated and a DTC is stored.
- Engine coolant temperature sensor soak monitor
If the engine coolant temperature sensor value does not change after the warmed up engine is stopped and then the next cold engine start is performed, it is determined that a malfunction has occurred. If this is detected in 2 consecutive driving cycles, the MIL is illuminated and a DTC is stored.
INSPECTION PROCEDURE
- NOTICE:
- Inspect the fuses of circuits related to this system before performing the following inspection procedure.
- After replacing the ECM, the new ECM needs registration (HILUX_TGN26 RM0000012XK07EX.html) and initialization (HILUX_TGN26 RM000000TIN056X.html).
- After replacing the fuel supply pump assembly, the ECM needs initialization (HILUX_TGN26 RM000000TIN056X.html).
- After replacing an injector assembly, the ECM needs registration (HILUX_TGN26 RM0000012XK07EX.html).
- HINT:
- Read freeze frame data using the intelligent tester. Freeze frame data records the engine condition when malfunctions are detected. When troubleshooting, freeze frame data can help determine if the vehicle was moving or stationary, if the engine was warmed up or not, and other data from the time the malfunction occurred.
1.CHECK FOR ANY OTHER DTCS OUTPUT (IN ADDITION TO DTC P0116) |
Connect the intelligent tester to the DLC3.
Turn the ignition switch to ON and turn the tester on.
Enter the following menus: Powertrain / Engine and ECT / DTC.
Read the DTCs.

Remove the thermostat (HILUX_TGN26 RM00000144C02GX.html).
Measure the valve opening temperature of the thermostat.
- Standard opening temperature:
- 80 to 84°C (176 to 183°F)
- HINT:
- In addition to the above check, confirm that the valve is completely closed when the temperature is below the standard.
Reinstall the thermostat (HILUX_TGN26 RM00000144901ZX.html).
3.REPLACE ENGINE COOLANT TEMPERATURE SENSOR |
Replace the engine coolant temperature sensor (HILUX_TGN26 RM0000013ZA018X.html).
Replace the thermostat (HILUX_TGN26 RM00000144C02GX.html).
5.CONFIRM WHETHER MALFUNCTION HAS BEEN SUCCESSFULLY REPAIRED |
Connect the intelligent tester to the DLC3.
Turn the ignition switch to ON and turn the tester on.
Enter the following menus: Powertrain / Engine and ECT / Data List / Coolant Temp.
Check that the engine coolant temperature is 60°C (140°F) or less.
Start the engine.
Idle the engine for 5 minutes, and then drive the vehicle at a speed of 40 km/h (25 mph) or more for a total of 5 minutes or more.
Check that the engine coolant temperature changes by 1°C (1.8°F) or more.
