  1. DISPOSE OF STEERING PAD ASSEMBLY (WHEN INSTALLED IN VEHICLE)

Steering Pad (For 3Zr-Fae) -- Disposal


HINT:
When scrapping a vehicle equipped with an SRS or disposing of the steering pad, be sure to deploy the airbag first in accordance with the procedure described below. If any abnormality occurs with the airbag deployment, contact the SERVICE DEPARTMENT of the DISTRIBUTOR.
CAUTION:
  1. An airbag or pretensioner may be activated by static electricity. To prevent this, be sure to touch a metal surface with bare hands to discharge static electricity before performing this procedure.
  2. Never dispose of a steering pad with an unactivated airbag.
  3. The airbag produces a loud, exploding sound when it activates. Perform the operation where it will not be a nuisance to people nearby
  4. When activating the airbag, always use the specified SST (SRS airbag deployment tool).
  5. Perform procedures in a place away from electrical interference.
  6. When activating the airbag, stand at least 10 m (33 ft.) away from the steering pad.
  7. The steering pad becomes very hot when the airbag is deployed. Do not touch it for at least 30 minutes after activation.
  8. Use gloves and safety glasses when handling a steering pad with a deployed airbag.
  9. Do not apply water to a steering pad with a deployed airbag.
  10. Always wash your hands with water after completing the operation.

HINT:
Prepare a battery as the power source to deploy the airbag.

  1. Check if SST is functioning properly.

    1. Connect the SST's red clip to the positive (+) battery terminal and the black clip to the negative (-) battery terminal.

      HINT:
      The yellow connector will be used to connect to another SST in a later step.

    3. Press the SST activation switch, and check that the LED of the SST activation switch illuminates.

      CAUTION:
      If the LED illuminates when the activation switch is not pressed, SST may have a malfunction, in which case that SST should not be used.
    4. Disconnect SST from the battery.

  1. Disconnect the cable from the negative (-) battery terminal.

    CAUTION:
    Wait at least 90 seconds after disconnecting the cable from the negative (-) battery terminal to disable the SRS system.
    NOTICE:
    w/ Navigation System for HDD:
    After the ignition switch is turned off, the HDD navigation system requires approximately a minute to record various types of memory and settings. As a result, after turning the ignition switch off, wait a minute or more before disconnecting the cable from the negative (-) battery terminal.
  1. Remove the steering column cover lower (RAV4_ACA30 RM00000114900FX_02_0010.html).

  1. Install SST.

    CAUTION:
    Check that there is no free play in the steering wheel and steering pad.

    1. Disconnect the yellow airbag connector from the spiral cable.

      NOTICE:
      When handling the airbag connector, do not damage the airbag wire harness.
    2. Connect SST (A) to SST (B). Then connect SST (B)'s connector to the spiral cable.

      NOTICE:
      To avoid damaging the SST connector and wire harness, do not lock the secondary lock of the twin lock.

    4. Move SST at least 10 m (33 ft.) away from the front side window.

    5. Maintaining enough clearance for the SST wire harness in the front side window, close all doors and windows of the vehicle.

      NOTICE:
      Take care not do damage the SST wire harness.
    6. Connect the SST's red clip to the positive (+) battery terminal and the black clip to the negative (-) battery terminal.

  1. Deploy the airbag.

    1. Check that no one is inside the vehicle or within a 10 m (33 ft.) radius of the vehicle.

    2. Press the SST activation switch and deploy the airbag.

      CAUTION:
      1. When deploying the airbag, make sure that no one is near the vehicle.
      2. The steering pad becomes extremely hot when the airbag is deployed. Do not touch it for at least 30 minutes after deployment.
      3. Use gloves and safety glasses when handling a steering pad with a deployed airbag.
      4. Do not apply water to a steering pad with a deployed airbag.
      5. Always wash your hands with water after completing the operation.
      HINT:
      The airbag is deployed as the SST activation switch LED illuminates.
