Steering Column Assembly (For Lhd) Removal

  1. PLACE FRONT WHEELS FACING STRAIGHT AHEAD

  2. DISCONNECT CABLE FROM NEGATIVE BATTERY TERMINAL

  3. REMOVE STEERING PAD

  4. REMOVE STEERING WHEEL ASSEMBLY

  5. REMOVE STEERING COLUMN COVER

  6. REMOVE SPIRAL CABLE SUB-ASSEMBLY

  7. REMOVE COMBINATION SWITCH ASSEMBLY

  8. REMOVE UPPER INSTRUMENT PANEL

  9. DISCONNECT POWER STEERING ECU CONNECTOR

  10. REMOVE NO. 1 INSTRUMENT PANEL UNDER COVER SUB-ASSEMBLY (w/ Driver Side Knee Airbag)

  11. REMOVE DRIVER SIDE KNEE AIRBAG ASSEMBLY (w/ Knee Airbag)

  12. REMOVE LOWER INSTRUMENT PANEL FINISH PANEL (w/o Driver Side Knee Airbag)

  13. REMOVE COLUMN HOLE COVER SILENCER SHEET

  14. REMOVE NO. 2 STEERING INTERMEDIATE SHAFT ASSEMBLY

  15. REMOVE BRAKE PEDAL SUPPORT ASSEMBLY

  16. REMOVE STEERING COLUMN ASSEMBLY

Steering Column Assembly (For Lhd) -- Removal


CAUTION:
Some of these service operations affect the SRS airbag system. Read the precautionary notices concerning the SRS airbag system before servicing the steering column
(RAV4_ACA30 RM000000KT106QX.html).


1. PLACE FRONT WHEELS FACING STRAIGHT AHEAD
CAUTION:
Wait at least 90 seconds after disconnecting the cable from the negative (-) battery terminal to disable the SRS system.


2. DISCONNECT CABLE FROM NEGATIVE BATTERY TERMINAL


3. REMOVE STEERING PAD

  1. Straighten the front wheels.

  1. Using a thin-bladed screwdriver, push open the spring clips and disengage the pins.

  1. Pull out the steering pad from the steering wheel and support the steering pad with one hand as shown in the illustration.

    NOTICE:
    When removing the steering pad, do not pull the airbag wire harness.

  1. Using a screwdriver, disconnect the 2 airbag connectors.

    CAUTION:
    When handling the airbag connector, do not damage the airbag wire harness.

  1. Disconnect the horn connector and remove the steering pad.



4. REMOVE STEERING WHEEL ASSEMBLY

  1. Remove the nut and place matchmarks on the steering wheel and steering column.

  1. Using SST, remove the steering wheel.

    SST
    09950-50013(09951-05010,09952-05010,09953-05020,09954-05021)
    NOTICE:
    Apply a small amount of grease to the threads and tip of SST (center bolt) before use.


5. REMOVE STEERING COLUMN COVER

  1. Detach the 4 claws, release the tilt lever and remove the lower steering column cover.

  1. Detach the claw and remove the upper steering column cover.



6. REMOVE SPIRAL CABLE SUB-ASSEMBLY

  1. Rise the steering column cover (upper).

    NOTICE:
    When handling the airbag connector, do not damage the airbag wire harness.

  1. Detach the 4 clips and remove the column cover (upper).

  1. Detach the 3 claws and remove the spiral cable.



7. REMOVE COMBINATION SWITCH ASSEMBLY

  1. Disconnect the all the connectors from the spiral cable.

  1. Detach the clamp shown in the illustration and remove the combination switch from the steering column.



8. REMOVE UPPER INSTRUMENT PANEL

  1. Remove the upper instrument panel (RAV4_ACA30 RM000001RHD00JX.html).



9. DISCONNECT POWER STEERING ECU CONNECTOR

  1. Detach the clamps of the power steering motor wire harness and torque sensor wire harness.

  1. Disconnect the 2 steering column connectors from the power steering ECU.



10. REMOVE NO. 1 INSTRUMENT PANEL UNDER COVER SUB-ASSEMBLY (w/ Driver Side Knee Airbag)

  1. Remove the 2 screws.

  1. Detach the 3 claws and remove the cover.



11. REMOVE DRIVER SIDE KNEE AIRBAG ASSEMBLY (w/ Knee Airbag)

  1. Remove the 4 bolts and driver side knee airbag.

  1. Disconnect the connector.

    NOTICE:
    When handling the airbag connector, take care not to damage the airbag wire harness.


12. REMOVE LOWER INSTRUMENT PANEL FINISH PANEL (w/o Driver Side Knee Airbag)

  1. Remove the 2 screws.

  1. Using a screwdriver, detach the 8 claws and remove the lower instrument panel finish panel.

    HINT:
    Tape the screwdriver tip before use.


13. REMOVE COLUMN HOLE COVER SILENCER SHEET

  1. Turn back the floor carpet, remove the 2 clips and column hole cover silencer sheet.



14. REMOVE NO. 2 STEERING INTERMEDIATE SHAFT ASSEMBLY

  1. Place matchmarks on the steering intermediate shaft and steering gear.

  1. Remove the bolt A and disconnect the steering intermediate shaft from the steering gear.

  1. Place matchmarks on the steering intermediate shaft and steering column.

  1. Remove the bolt B and steering intermediate shaft from the steering column.



15. REMOVE BRAKE PEDAL SUPPORT ASSEMBLY

  1. Remove the brake pedal support (RAV4_ACA30 RM000001HJ600FX.html).



16. REMOVE STEERING COLUMN ASSEMBLY

  1. Disconnect all connectors and detach all wire harness clamps from the steering column.

  1. Remove the bolt and 2 nuts and remove the steering column from the instrument panel reinforcement.
