DTC P0711 Transmission Fluid Temperature Sensor "A" Performance

DESCRIPTION

The CVT fluid temperature sensor converts the fluid temperature into a resistance value which is detected by the ECM.
The sensor resistance changes with the CVT fluid temperature. As the temperature rises, the sensor resistance decreases. The ECM applies a voltage to the temperature sensor through ECM terminal THO1 and calculates the fluid temperature based on the voltage signal.
HINT:
The CVT fluid temperature is likely to increase under conditions such as towing, climbing hills and in traffic.

MONITOR DESCRIPTION

The CVT fluid temperature sensor converts the CVT fluid temperature to an electrical resistance value. Based on the resistance, the ECM determines the CVT fluid temperature and detects open or short circuits in the CVT fluid temperature circuit.
After driving the vehicle for a certain period, the CVT fluid temperature should increase. When the CVT fluid temperature is below 20°C (68°F), the ECM interprets this as a fault and turns on the MIL.
When the engine coolant temperature reaches 35°C (95°F) after a cold engine start, if the CVT fluid temperature is 100°C (212°F) or more, the ECM also determines this as a fault, turns on the MIL, and stores the DTC.

INSPECTION PROCEDURE

1.CHECK DTC OUTPUT (IN ADDITION TO DTC P0711)
  1. Connect the intelligent tester to the DLC3.

  1. Turn the ignition switch to ON.

  1. Turn the intelligent tester on.

  1. Enter the following menus: Powertrain / Engine and ECT / DTC.

  1. Read the DTCs using the tester.

    Only P0711 is output
    A
P0711 and other DTCs are output
    B

    HINT:
If any other DTCs besides P0711 are output, perform troubleshooting for those DTCs first.

2.CHECK TRANSMISSION FLUID LEVEL
  1. Check the CVT fluid level (RAV4_ACA30 RM0000013BU03VX.html).

    OK:
    CVT fluid level is correct.

3.REPLACE CONTINUOUSLY VARIABLE TRANSAXLE ASSEMBLY
  1. Replace the continuously variable transaxle assembly (RAV4_ACA30 RM00000192D01ZX.html).

4.PERFORM INITIALIZATION
NOTICE:
  1. Performing reset memory will clear the learned values of both the yaw rate sensor assembly*1 or deceleration sensor*2 (deceleration sensor 0 point calibration) and CVT oil pressure (CVT oil pressure calibration). Make sure to perform reset memory, yaw rate sensor assembly*1 or deceleration sensor*2 0 point calibration and CVT oil pressure calibration when replacing any of the parts shown in the following table:
    Replaced Part
    1. Continuously variable transaxle assembly
    2. ECM
    3. Oil pressure sensor
    4. Yaw rate sensor assembly (w/ VSC)
    5. Deceleration sensor (w/o VSC)
    6. Brake actuator assembly (skid control ECU)
  2. After performing reset memory, always perform yaw rate sensor assembly*1 or deceleration sensor*2 (deceleration sensor 0 point) calibration first, and then CVT oil pressure calibration.
  3. Always perform 0 point calibration with the vehicle on level ground.
  4. Do not shake or vibrate the vehicle during 0 point calibration.
  1. Using the intelligent tester, perform reset memory, deceleration sensor 0 point calibration and CVT oil pressure calibration (RAV4_ACA30 RM000003UQR002X.html).

  1. Check that no DTC is stored.
