  1. Install the nut.

  1. Flip the ball joint stud back and forth 5 times as shown in the illustration.

  1. Using a torque wrench, turn the nut continuously at a rate of 3 to 5 seconds per turn and check the torque reading on the 5th turn.

    Standard Torque:
    1.0 to 3.9 N*m (10 to 39 kgf*cm, 9 to 34 in.*lbf)

2. INSPECT TOTAL PRELOAD

    Standard preload (turning):
    Body Type
    Engine Type
    Specified Condition
    for 5 Door
    for 1GR, 2TR, 1KD, 1GD
    1.6 to 2.3 N*m (16 to 23 kgf*cm, 14 to 20 in.*lbf)
    for 5L
    1.5 to 2.2 N*m (15 to 22 kgf*cm, 13 to 19 in.*lbf)
    for 3 Door
    for 1KD, 2TR, 1GD
If the turning torque is not as specified, replace the steering gear assembly.
    HINT:
    1. Measure the standard preload at the steering rack neutral point.
    2. The steering control valve is fully turned when turned 3.0 times. Half of the distance from the fully turned position is the neutral point.
  1. After inspecting the preload, align the matchmarks.
