Rear Axle Shaft On-Vehicle Inspection

Remove the rear wheel.

Remove the brake drum.

Inspect the axle shaft backlash.

1. Using a dial indicator, check the backlash near the center of the axle shaft.
   

   Maximum backlash:

   0.5 mm (0.0197 in.)
   

   If the backlash is greater than the maximum, replace the bearing.
   

Inspect the axle shaft deviation.

1. Using a dial indicator, check the deviation of the surface of the axle shaft.
   

   Maximum deviation:

   0.1 mm (0.0039 in.)
   

   If the deviation is greater than the maximum, replace the bearing.
