  1. Make sure the 2nd brake piston moves smoothly when applying and releasing low-pressure compressed air to the 2nd brake drum.

3. REMOVE 2ND BRAKE PISTON RETURN SPRING

Toyota Fortuner. Ggn50, 60 Kun51, 61 Tgn51 Lan50.A340E Automatic Transmission.Second Brake.Second Brake Disassembly
  1. Place SST on the spring retainer, and compress the piston return spring with a press.

    SST
    09350-30020(09350-07040)
  1. Using a snap ring expander, remove the snap ring.

    NOTICE:
    1. Do not deform the spring sheet. Stop compressing when the spring sheet is lowered to 1 to 2 mm (0.0394 to 0.0787 in.) from the snap ring groove.
    2. Do not expand the snap ring excessively.
  1. Remove the spring retainer.

  1. Hold the 2nd brake piston by hand, and apply compressed air to the 2nd brake drum to remove the 2nd brake piston.

  1. Remove the 2nd brake piston.

    HINT:
If the piston is at an angle and cannot be removed, press down on the protruding side and apply compressed air again. Or, wind vinyl tape around the piston end and remove it with needle-nose pliers.
  1. Remove the 2 O-rings from the piston.

5. INSPECT 2ND BRAKE CLUTCH DISC

Toyota Fortuner. Ggn50, 60 Kun51, 61 Tgn51 Lan50.A340E Automatic Transmission.Second Brake.Second Brake Disassembly
  1. Replace all discs if one of the following problems is present: 1) a disc, plate or flange is worn or burnt, 2) the lining of a disc is peeled off or discolored, or 3) grooves or printed numbers have even a little bit of damage.

    NOTICE:
Before assembling new discs, soak them in ATF for at least 15 minutes.

6. INSPECT 2ND BRAKE PISTON RETURN SPRING

  1. Using a vernier caliper, measure the free length of the spring together with the spring seat.

    Standard free length:
    16.05 mm (0.632 in.)
If the length is not as specified, replace the spring.
