Drive Belt -- On-Vehicle Inspection |
1. CHECK DRIVE BELT TENSION |
![]() |
Visually check the belt for cracks, oiliness or wear. Check that the belt does not touch the bottom of the pulley groove.
If necessary, replace the belt.
Check the vane pump V belt.
- HINT:
- Check the V belt deflection at the specified point.
- A "new belt" is a belt which has been used for less than 5 minutes on a running engine. When installing a new belt, set its deflection value as specified.
- A "used belt" is a belt which has been used on a running engine for 5 minutes or more. When checking a used belt, confirm that the deflection value is within the specified range. When reinstalling a used belt, perform the check based on the used belt deflection value.
- V belt tension and deflection value should be checked after 2 revolutions of engine cranking.
- When using a belt tension gauge, confirm the accuracy first by using a master gauge.
Check the V belt deflection by pressing on the belt at the points indicated in the illustration with 98 N (10 kgf, 22 lbf) of pressure.
- Standard V belt deflection:
Item Specified Condition New belt 7.5 to 9.5 mm (0.30 to 0.37 in.) Used belt 9.0 to 13 mm (0.35 to 0.51 in.)
- If necessary, adjust the V belt deflection.
Using a belt tension gauge, check the drive belt tension.
- Standard V belt tension:
Item Specified Condition New belt 441 to 539 N (45 to 55 kgf) Used belt 245 to 343 N (25 to 35 kgf)
- If the belt tension is not as specified, adjust it.
w/ Air Conditioning System:
Check the cooler compressor V belt.- HINT:
- Check the V belt deflection at the specified point.
- A "new belt" is a belt which has been used for less than 5 minutes on a running engine. When installing a new belt, set its deflection value as specified.
- A "used belt" is a belt which has been used on a running engine for 5 minutes or more. When checking a used belt, confirm that the deflection value is within the specified range. When reinstalling a used belt, perform the check based on the used belt deflection value.

Check the V belt deflection by pressing on the belt at the points indicated in the illustration with 98 N (10 kgf, 22 lbf) of pressure.
- Standard V belt deflection:
Item Specified Condition New belt 11 to 15 mm (0.43 to 0.59 in.) Used belt 15 to 20 mm (0.59 to 0.79 in.)
- If necessary, adjust the V belt deflection.
Using a belt tension gauge, check the V belt tension.
- Standard V belt tension:
Item Specified Condition New belt 372 to 608 N (38 to 62 kgf) Used belt 196 to 392 N (20 to 40 kgf)
- If the belt tension is not as specified, adjust it.
Check the fan and generator V belt.
- HINT:

Item Specified Condition New belt 7.0 to 10 mm (0.28 to 0.39 in.) Used belt 10 to 14 mm (0.39 to 0.55 in.)
- If necessary, adjust the V belt deflection.
Using a belt tension gauge, check the V belt tension.
- Standard V belt tension:
Item Specified Condition New belt 441 to 539 N (45 to 55 kgf) Used belt 196 to 343 N (20 to 35 kgf)
- If the belt tension is not as specified, adjust it.
