Rear Brake Disassembly


  1. CHECK BRAKE SHOE LINING THICKNESS

  2. REMOVE REAR WHEEL

  3. DRAIN BRAKE FLUID

  4. REMOVE REAR BRAKE DRUM SUB-ASSEMBLY

  5. REMOVE REAR BRAKE AUTOMATIC ADJUST LEVER LH

  6. REMOVE BRAKE SHOES

  7. REMOVE REAR BRAKE PARKING BRAKE SHOE LEVER SUB-ASSEMBLY

  8. REMOVE REAR WHEEL BRAKE CYLINDER ASSEMBLY LH

  9. REMOVE REAR WHEEL BRAKE CYLINDER CUP

  10. REMOVE REAR BRAKE DRUM BLEEDER PLUG

Rear Brake -- Disassembly


HINT:
  1. Use the same procedures for the LH side and RH side.
  2. The procedures listed below are for the LH side.


1. CHECK BRAKE SHOE LINING THICKNESS


    Toyota Fortuner. Ggn50, 60 Kun51, 61 Tgn51 Lan50
  1. Remove the hole plug (check), and check the shoe lining thickness through the hole.

    Minimum thickness:
    1.0 mm (0.0394 in.)
    If the thickness is less than the minimum, replace the shoe.


2. REMOVE REAR WHEEL


3. DRAIN BRAKE FLUID
NOTICE:
Wash off brake fluid immediately if it comes in contact with any painted surface.


4. REMOVE REAR BRAKE DRUM SUB-ASSEMBLY
  1. Release the parking brake lever, and remove the drum and gasket.

    HINT:
    If the drum cannot be removed easily, perform the following procedures.

  1. Remove the hole plug (adjust) and insert a screwdriver into the hole on the backing plate, and hold the automatic adjust lever away from the adjuster.

  1. Using another screwdriver, compress the shoe adjuster by turning the adjusting wheel.



5. REMOVE REAR BRAKE AUTOMATIC ADJUST LEVER LH

  1. Using needle-nose pliers, remove the adjust lever tension spring and lever.



6. REMOVE BRAKE SHOES

  1. Using pliers, remove the shoe hold down springs and pins from the front brake shoe and rear brake shoe.

  1. Push the front or rear side of the wheel brake cylinder with the brake shoe. Then remove the side of the brake shoe opposite to the side of the cylinder being pushed. Finally, remove the remaining side of the brake shoe.

    NOTICE:
    Be careful not to damage the cylinder dust boot.

  1. Move one of the shoes downward and remove the shoe tension spring.

  1. Remove the front and rear brake shoes.

  1. Remove the strut set and return spring from the shoe.

  1. Remove the support clip from the strut set and return spring.

  1. Using needle-nose pliers, disconnect the No. 3 parking brake cable from the parking brake shoe lever.



7. REMOVE REAR BRAKE PARKING BRAKE SHOE LEVER SUB-ASSEMBLY

  1. Using a screwdriver, remove the C-washer and lever.



8. REMOVE REAR WHEEL BRAKE CYLINDER ASSEMBLY LH


    Toyota Fortuner. Ggn50, 60 Kun51, 61 Tgn51 Lan50
  1. Using a union nut wrench, disconnect the brake line.

  1. Remove the 2 bolts and cylinder.



9. REMOVE REAR WHEEL BRAKE CYLINDER CUP
  1. Remove the 2 cylinder dust boots from the cylinder.

  1. Remove the 2 pistons and compression spring.

  1. Remove the 2 wheel cylinder cups from the 2 pistons.



10. REMOVE REAR BRAKE DRUM BLEEDER PLUG
  1. Remove the bleeder plug cap and bleeder plug from the cylinder.
