Steering Column Assembly Removal


  1. DISCONNECT CABLE FROM NEGATIVE BATTERY TERMINAL

  2. PLACE FRONT WHEELS FACING STRAIGHT AHEAD

  3. REMOVE STEERING PAD ASSEMBLY

  4. REMOVE STEERING WHEEL ASSEMBLY

  5. REMOVE STEERING COLUMN LOWER COVER

  6. REMOVE STEERING COLUMN UPPER COVER

  7. REMOVE INSTRUMENT CLUSTER FINISH PANEL NO.1

  8. REMOVE SPIRAL CABLE SUB-ASSEMBLY

  9. REMOVE WIPER AND WASHER SWITCH ASSEMBLY

  10. REMOVE HEADLIGHT DIMMER SWITCH ASSEMBLY

  11. REMOVE UPPER INSTRUMENT PANEL SUB-ASSEMBLY

  12. REMOVE LOWER INSTRUMENT PANEL SUB-ASSEMBLY

  13. DISCONNECT STEERING SLIDING YOKE

  14. DISCONNECT CONNECTOR

  15. REMOVE STEERING COLUMN ASSEMBLY

Steering Column Assembly -- Removal



1. DISCONNECT CABLE FROM NEGATIVE BATTERY TERMINAL
CAUTION:
Wait at least 90 seconds after disconnecting the cable from the negative (-) battery terminal to prevent airbag and seat belt pretensioner activation.


2. PLACE FRONT WHEELS FACING STRAIGHT AHEAD


3. REMOVE STEERING PAD ASSEMBLY

  1. Straighten the front wheels.

  1. Using a T30 "torx" socket, loosen the 2 screws until the groove along each screw circumference catches on the screw case.

  1. Pull out the steering pad from the steering wheel and support the steering pad with one hand as shown in the illustration.

    NOTICE:
    When removing the steering pad, do not pull the airbag wire harness.
  1. Using a screwdriver, disconnect the airbag connector.

    NOTICE:
    When handling the airbag connector, do not damage the airbag wire harness.
  1. Disconnect the horn connector and remove the steering pad.



4. REMOVE STEERING WHEEL ASSEMBLY
  1. Remove the steering wheel set nut.

  1. Place matchmarks on the steering wheel and main shaft.

  1. Using SST, remove the steering wheel.

    SST

5. REMOVE STEERING COLUMN LOWER COVER

  1. Remove the 3 screws and lower cover.



6. REMOVE STEERING COLUMN UPPER COVER


7. REMOVE INSTRUMENT CLUSTER FINISH PANEL NO.1

  1. Remove the clip.

  1. Detach the 2 claws and remove the panel.



8. REMOVE SPIRAL CABLE SUB-ASSEMBLY

  1. Disconnect the connectors from the spiral cable.

    NOTICE:
    When handling the airbag connector, do not damage the airbag wire harness.
  1. Detach the 3 claws and remove the spiral cable.



9. REMOVE WIPER AND WASHER SWITCH ASSEMBLY

  1. Disconnect the connectors.

  1. Detach the claw and remove the wiper switch.

    NOTICE:
    Do not push the claw with excessive force as damage may occur.


10. REMOVE HEADLIGHT DIMMER SWITCH ASSEMBLY

  1. Disconnect the connector.



    Toyota Fortuner. Ggn50, 60 Kun51, 61 Tgn51 Lan50
  1. Using needle-nose pliers, remove the band clamp as shown in the illustration.

  1. Using a screwdriver, detach the claw and remove the switch.

    HINT:
    Tape the screwdriver tip before use.


11. REMOVE UPPER INSTRUMENT PANEL SUB-ASSEMBLY

NOTICE:
Be careful not to damage the steering wheel.
  1. Remove the 2 bolts <A> and 2 screws <B>.

  1. Pull up the instrument panel to detach the 8 claws.

  1. Disconnect all connectors.

  1. Remove the instrument panel.



12. REMOVE LOWER INSTRUMENT PANEL SUB-ASSEMBLY


NOTICE:
Make sure that the wire harness is not caught on anything.

  1. Using a clip remover, remove the 4 clips from the duct and instrument panel.

  1. Remove the 2 bolts <A> and nut <G>.

  1. Remove the 3 screws <F>.

  1. Disconnect all connectors and detach all clamps.

  1. Remove the hood lock control cable lever and fuel lid control cable lever.

  1. Remove the instrument panel.



13. DISCONNECT STEERING SLIDING YOKE

  1. Loosen the bolt labeled A.

  1. Place matchmarks on the steering yoke and steering intermediate shaft.

  1. Remove the bolt labeled B.



14. DISCONNECT CONNECTOR

  1. Disconnect the 9 connectors and wire harness clamps from the steering column.



15. REMOVE STEERING COLUMN ASSEMBLY

  1. Remove the 3 bolts and cover.

  1. Remove the 3 bolts and pull out the steering column together with the steering sliding with coupling yoke.
