Anti-Lock Brake System -- Operation Check |
CHECK ABS WARNING LIGHT |
![]() |
When the ignition switch is turned ON, check that the ABS warning light illuminates and then turns off in approximately 3 seconds.
- HINT:
- Troubleshoot the ABS warning light circuit if the warning light remains ON or has other malfunctions.
CHECK SENSOR SIGNAL BY TEST MODE (When not Using Intelligent Tester) |
Procedures for test mode:
Turn the ignition switch OFF.
Using SST, connect terminals 12 (TS) and 4 (CG) of the DLC3.
- SST
- 09843-18040
Start the engine.
Check that the ABS warning light blinks as shown in the illustration.
- HINT:
- If the ABS warning light does not blink, check the ABS warning light circuit.
4WD:
Check shift lever position.Start the engine, and turn the center differential lock switch OFF.
Check that the center differential lock indicator light illuminates when the transfer shift lever is moved from the N or LL position to the HL or H position.
Check that the center differential lock indicator light turns off when the transfer shift lever is moved from the HL or H position to the N or LL position.
4WD and Pre-runner:
Check the deceleration sensor.Create gravitational force (0.2 G or more) on the vehicle through deceleration. Use one of the following methods to decelerate the vehicle in the direction it is moving:
- Apply the brakes.
- Drive over a bump.
- Drive on an incline.
- Apply the brakes.
When the deceleration sensor is 0.2 G or more, check that the ABS warning light illuminates.
Check the speed sensor.
Drive the vehicle straight forward at the following speeds. Then check that the ABS warning light is as follows.
Vehicle Speed Check ABS Warning Light 3 to 5 km/h (2 to 3 mph) Response of sensors Blinking 45 km/h (28 mph) or higher Deviations of sensor signal Turns off - HINT:
- The sensor signal check may not be completed if the vehicle's wheels slip or the steering wheel is turned during this check.
Stop the vehicle.
Read the DTCs.
Using SST, connect terminals 13 (TC) and 4 (CG) of the DLC3.
- SST
- 09843-18040
Read the number of blinks of the ABS warning light.
- HINT:
- As an example, the blinking patterns for DTCs 72 and 76 are shown below.
- The conditions are explained in the Diagnostic Trouble Code Chart.
- For the normal code, the light cycles between ON and OFF at intervals of 0.25 seconds.
- If more than 1 DTC is detected at the same time, the codes will be displayed in numerical order.
After the check, disconnect SST from terminals 13 (TC) and 4 (CG) of the DLC3.

Procedures for test mode:
Turn the ignition switch OFF.
Check that the shift lever is on P.
Connect the intelligent tester to the DLC3.
Start the engine.
Select the Test Mode using the intelligent tester.
- HINT:
- Refer to the intelligent tester operator's manual for further details.
Check that the ABS warning light blinks.
