Rear Axle Shaft Removal


  1. DISCONNECT CABLE FROM NEGATIVE BATTERY TERMINAL

  2. REMOVE REAR WHEEL

  3. DRAIN BRAKE FLUID

  4. DISCONNECT BRAKE LINE

  5. REMOVE REAR BRAKE DRUM SUB-ASSEMBLY

  6. REMOVE REAR SPEED SENSOR LH (w/ ABS, VSC)

  7. REMOVE BRAKE SHOES

  8. DISCONNECT PARKING BRAKE CABLE

  9. REMOVE REAR AXLE SHAFT WITH BACKING PLATE

  10. REMOVE O-RING

  11. REMOVE REAR AXLE SHAFT OIL SEAL LH

  12. REMOVE BACKING PLATE TO REAR AXLE HOUSING SETTING BOLT

  13. REMOVE REAR AXLE BEARING INNER RETAINER LH AND REAR SKID CONTROL ROTOR (w/ ABS, VSC)

  14. REMOVE REAR AXLE BEARING INNER RETAINER LH

  15. REMOVE REAR AXLE SHAFT LH

  16. REMOVE REAR AXLE HUB BOLT LH

  17. INSPECT REAR AXLE SHAFT LH

  18. REMOVE REAR AXLE SHAFT OUTER OIL SEAL

  19. REMOVE REAR AXLE SHAFT BEARING LH

Rear Axle Shaft -- Removal


HINT:
  1. Use the same procedures for the RH side and LH side.
  2. The procedures listed below are for the LH side.


1. DISCONNECT CABLE FROM NEGATIVE BATTERY TERMINAL
CAUTION:
Wait at least 90 seconds after disconnecting the cable from the negative (-) battery terminal to prevent airbag and seat belt pretensioner activation.


2. REMOVE REAR WHEEL


3. DRAIN BRAKE FLUID
NOTICE:
Wash off brake fluid immediately if it comes in contact with any painted surface.


4. DISCONNECT BRAKE LINE

  1. Using SST, disconnect the brake line.

  1. Remove the 2 bolts and cylinder.



5. REMOVE REAR BRAKE DRUM SUB-ASSEMBLY
  1. Release the parking brake lever, and remove the drum.

    HINT:
    If the drum cannot be removed easily, perform the following procedures.

  1. Remove the hole plug (adjust) and insert a screwdriver into the hole on the backing plate, and hold the automatic adjust lever away from the adjuster.

  1. Using another screwdriver, compress the shoe adjuster by turning the adjusting wheel.



6. REMOVE REAR SPEED SENSOR LH (w/ ABS, VSC)


  1. Disconnect the connector.

  1. Detach the connector.

  1. Detach the 3 clamps.

  1. Remove the bolt and speed sensor.

    NOTICE:
    Keep the sensor tip and sensor installation hole free from foreign matter.


7. REMOVE BRAKE SHOES

  1. Using pliers, remove the shoe hold down springs and pins from the front brake shoe and rear brake shoe.

  1. Push the front or rear side of the wheel brake cylinder with the brake shoe. Then remove the side of the brake shoe opposite to the side of the cylinder being pushed. Finally, remove the remaining side of the brake shoe.

    NOTICE:
    Be careful not to damage the cylinder dust boot.

  1. Move one of the shoes downward and remove the shoe tension spring.

  1. Remove the front and rear brake shoes.

  1. Remove the strut set and return spring from the shoe.

  1. Remove the support clip from the strut set and return spring.

  1. Using needle-nose pliers, disconnect the No. 3 parking brake cable from the parking brake shoe lever.



8. DISCONNECT PARKING BRAKE CABLE
  1. Remove the 2 bolts and disconnect the parking brake cable.



9. REMOVE REAR AXLE SHAFT WITH BACKING PLATE

  1. Remove the 4 nuts.

  1. Pull out the axle shaft from the axle housing.



10. REMOVE O-RING
  1. Remove the O-ring from the axle housing.



11. REMOVE REAR AXLE SHAFT OIL SEAL LH

  1. Using SST, tap out the oil seal.

    NOTICE:
    Be careful not to damage the axle housing hole.


12. REMOVE BACKING PLATE TO REAR AXLE HOUSING SETTING BOLT

  1. Temporarily install 4 nuts to the setting bolts.

    NOTICE:
    Do not use any nuts removed from the vehicle, as they may be damaged.
  1. Using a hammer, tap out the 4 setting bolts from the backing plate.

  1. Remove the 4 nuts and 4 setting bolts.



13. REMOVE REAR AXLE BEARING INNER RETAINER LH AND REAR SKID CONTROL ROTOR (w/ ABS, VSC)

  1. Grind the retainer and skid control rotor surfaces using a grinder, and then pry them off with a chisel and hammer.

    NOTICE:
    Be careful not to damage the axle shaft.


14. REMOVE REAR AXLE BEARING INNER RETAINER LH

  1. Using a snap ring expander, remove the snap ring.



    Toyota Fortuner. Ggn50, 60 Kun51, 61 Tgn51 Lan50
  1. Grind the retainer surface using a grinder, and then pry it off with a chisel and hammer.

    NOTICE:
    Be careful not to damage the axle shaft.
  1. Remove the shaft washer from the axle shaft.



15. REMOVE REAR AXLE SHAFT LH
  1. Insert the setting bolts into the backing plate and temporarily install washers and nuts to the setting bolts. Tighten the nuts to temporarily install the setting bolts to the backing plate and bearing case.

  1. Remove the nuts and washers from the setting bolts.

  1. Install SST to the backing plate with the 4 nuts.

  1. Using SST and a press, press out the axle shaft.

  1. Remove the 4 nuts and SST.

  1. Temporarily install 4 nuts to the setting bolts.

    NOTICE:
    Do not use any nuts removed from the vehicle, as they may be damaged.
  1. Using a hammer, tap out the 4 setting bolts from the backing plate.

  1. Remove the 4 nuts and 4 setting bolts.



16. REMOVE REAR AXLE HUB BOLT LH

  1. Using SST, remove the 6 hub bolts.

  1. Remove the deflector and gasket from the axle shaft.

    NOTICE:
    1. Do not deform the deflector.
    2. Make sure to align the groove of SST with the flange of the oil deflector.


17. INSPECT REAR AXLE SHAFT LH

  1. Using a dial indicator, measure the rear axle shaft shaft runout and flange runout.

    Maximum runout:
    Item

    Shaft runout
    1.5 mm (0.0591 in.)
    Flange runout
    0.10 mm (0.00394 in.)
    If the rear axle shaft or flange is damaged or worn, or if the runout is greater than the maximum, replace the rear axle shaft.


18. REMOVE REAR AXLE SHAFT OUTER OIL SEAL

  1. Using SST, tap out the outer oil seal.

19. REMOVE REAR AXLE SHAFT BEARING LH

  1. Using SST and a press, press out the bearing.
