DTC P2111 Throttle Actuator Control System - Stuck Open

DTC P2112 Throttle Actuator Control System - Stuck Closed

DESCRIPTION

The throttle actuator is operated by the ECM and it opens and closes the throttle valve using gears. The opening angle of the throttle valve is detected by the throttle position sensor which is mounted on the throttle body. The sensor provides feedback to the ECM for controlling the throttle actuator, which adjusts the throttle valve opening in response to driving conditions.
If this malfunction is detected, the ECM shuts down the power for the throttle actuator, and the throttle valve is locked at a certain opening angle by the return spring. Also, all electronically controlled throttle operations are canceled until the system returns to normal and the ignition switch is turned OFF.

HINT:
This Electronic Throttle Control System (ETCS) does not use a throttle cable.

DTC No.
DTC Detection Condition
Trouble Area
P2111
Throttle actuator is locked while close command is being transmitted from ECM
(1 trip detection logic)
  1. Throttle actuator
  2. Throttle body
  3. Throttle valve
P2112
Throttle actuator is locked while open command is being transmitted from ECM
(1 trip detection logic)
  1. Throttle actuator
  2. Throttle body
  3. Throttle valve

MONITOR DESCRIPTION

The ECM concludes that there is a malfunction of the ETCS when the throttle valve remains at a fixed angle despite high drive current from the ECM. The ECM will illuminate the Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL) and set a DTC.
To activate the monitor: 1) start the engine, and 2) fully depress and release the accelerator pedal quickly to fully open and fully close the throttle valve.

FAIL-SAFE

If the ETCS is malfunctioning, the ECM cuts off the current to the throttle actuator. The throttle control valve returns to a predetermined throttle position (approximately 6°) by the force of the return spring.
Then, required engine power is calculated using the ignition timing and accelerator pedal position. The engine is controlled by intermittent fuel-cut.
If the accelerator pedal is depressed firmly and slowly, the vehicle can be driven at minimum speed. If the accelerator pedal is depressed quickly, the vehicle may speed up and slow down erratically.

INSPECTION PROCEDURE

HINT:
Read freeze frame data using the intelligent tester. Freeze frame data records the engine conditions when a malfunction is detected. When troubleshooting, freeze frame data can help determine if the vehicle was running or stopped, if the engine was warmed up or not, if the air-fuel ratio was lean or rich, and other data from the time the malfunction occurred.
1.CHECK OTHER DTC OUTPUT (IN ADDITION TO DTC P2111, P2112)
  1. Connect the intelligent tester to the DLC3.

  1. Turn the ignition switch ON and turn the tester ON.

  1. Enter the following menus: Powertrain / Engine and ECT / DTC.

  1. Read DTCs.

    Result:
    Display (DTC output)
    Proceed to
    P2111 or P2112
    A
P2111 or P2112 and other DTCs
    B
    HINT:
If any other DTCs besides P2111 or P2112 are output, perform troubleshooting for those DTCs first.

NG
GO TO RELEVANT DTC CHART
OK

2.INSPECT THROTTLE BODY ASSEMBLY (THROTTLE VALVE)
  1. Visually check for foreign objects between the throttle valve and housing. Also, check that the valve can open and close smoothly.

    OK:
Throttle valve is not contaminated with foreign objects and move smoothly.

NG
REPLACE THROTTLE BODY ASSEMBLY
OK

3.CHECK IF DTC OUTPUT RECURS (DTC P2111, P2112)
  1. Clear the DTCs (Toyota Fortuner RM0000010E700JX.html).

  1. Start the engine, and fully depress and release the accelerator pedal quickly to fully open and fully close the throttle valve.

  1. Turn the ignition switch OFF.

  1. Connect the intelligent tester to the DLC3.

  1. Turn the ignition switch ON and turn the tester ON.

  1. Enter the following menus: Powertrain / Engine and ECT / DTC.

  1. Read DTCs.

    Result:
    Display (DTC output)
    Proceed to
    No DTC
