1. INSTALL NO. 2 FRONT ENGINE MOUNTING BRACKET LH
  1. Install the No. 2 front engine mounting bracket LH with the bolt.

2. INSTALL FRONT ENGINE MOUNTING INSULATOR RH
  1. Install the mounting insulator with the nut.

    Torque:

    72 N*m{ 734 kgf*cm , 53 ft.*lbf }

3. INSTALL FRONT ENGINE MOUNTING INSULATOR LH
  1. Install the mounting insulator with the nut.

    Torque:

4. REMOVE ENGINE STAND

  1. Attach an engine sling device and hang the engine with a chain block.

  1. Remove the bolts and engine assembly from the engine stand.

    NOTICE:

    1. With the exception of installing the engine assembly to an engine stand or removing the engine assembly from an engine stand, do not perform any work on the engine while it is suspended, as doing so is dangerous.
    2. Pay attention to the angle of the sling device as the engine assembly or engine hangers may be damaged or deformed if the angle is incorrect.

5. INSTALL ENGINE ASSEMBLY
  1. Slowly lower the engine assembly into the engine compartment.

    NOTICE:

    Make sure that the engine is clear of all wiring and hoses.

  1. Attach the engine mounting insulators to the vehicle.

  1. Install the 4 engine mounting insulator bolts.

    Torque:

    79 N*m{ 806 kgf*cm , 58 ft.*lbf }

  1. Remove the 2 bolts and 2 engine hangers.

6. INSTALL WATER PIPE AND HOSE SUB-ASSEMBLY
  1. Connect the hose and install the water pipe and hose with the 2 bolts.

    Torque:

    18 N*m{ 184 kgf*cm , 13 ft.*lbf }

7. CONNECT OIL COOLER PIPE ASSEMBLY
  1. Connect the oil cooler pipe with the 2 bolts.

    Torque:

    14 N*m{ 143 kgf*cm , 10 ft.*lbf }

8. INSTALL DRIVE PLATE AND RING GEAR SUB-ASSEMBLY

      Tighten the cylinder head bolts another 90°.

    6. Check that the painted marks are now at a 90° angle to the upside.

      NOTICE:

      Do not start the engine for at least an hour after installing the drive plate.

9. INSTALL REAR NO. 1 ENGINE MOUNTING INSULATOR

HINT:

Only perform this procedure when replacement of the engine mounting insulator is necessary.

  1. Install the rear engine mounting insulator to the transmission with the 4 bolts.

    Torque:

  1. Install the front engine mounting insulator RH with the 2 bolts.

    Torque:

  1. Install the wire harness clamp bracket of the oxygen sensor to the transmission with the bolt.

  1. Connect the heated oxygen sensor connector.

24. INSTALL FRONT NO. 2 EXHAUST PIPE ASSEMBLY
  1. Install a new gasket and the front No. 2 exhaust pipe to the exhaust manifold LH with 2 new nuts.

    Torque:

    54 N*m{ 551 kgf*cm , 40 ft.*lbf }

  1. Install the wire harness clamp bracket of the oxygen sensor to the transmission with the bolt.

    Torque:

    29 N*m{ 296 kgf*cm , 21 ft.*lbf }

  1. Connect the heated oxygen sensor connector.

25. INSTALL CENTER EXHAUST PIPE ASSEMBLY
  1. Install 2 new gaskets to the front exhaust pipe and front No. 2 exhaust pipe.

  1. Install the center exhaust pipe to the 3 exhaust pipe supports, and then install the 4 bolts.

    Torque:

    48 N*m{ 489 kgf*cm , 35 ft.*lbf }

26. INSTALL TAILPIPE ASSEMBLY
  1. Install the tailpipe to the 2 exhaust pipe supports.

  1. Install a new gasket to the center exhaust pipe.

  1. Connect the tailpipe to the center exhaust pipe.

3UR-FE Engine assembly - Installation. Connect the tailpipe to the center exhaust pipe.

  1. Attach a new clamp to the tailpipe and center exhaust pipe. Then install the bolt to the clamp.

    Torque:

27. INSTALL GENERATOR ASSEMBLY

28. CONNECT VANE PUMP ASSEMBLY

30. CONNECT WIRE HARNESS AND HOSE
  1. Connect the clamp and 2 connectors.

  1. Connect the 2 connectors and 2 clips to the engine room junction block.

  1. Install the engine wire to the engine room junction block with the nut. Then connect the 2 clips.

    Torque:

    10 N*m{ 102 kgf*cm , 7 ft.*lbf }

  1. Install the ground wire to the bracket with the bolt.

    Torque:

    8.0 N*m{ 82 kgf*cm , 71 in.*lbf }

  1. Install the ground wire to the body with the bolt.

    Torque:

    8.4 N*m{ 86 kgf*cm , 74 in.*lbf }

  1. Connect the cable to the positive (+) battery terminal.

  1. Install the wire to the positive (+) battery cable with the nut.

    Torque:

    5.4 N*m{ 55 kgf*cm , 48 in.*lbf }

  1. Install the ground wire with the bolt.

    Torque:

    8.0 N*m{ 82 kgf*cm , 71 in.*lbf }

  1. Connect the clamp and 4 connectors to the connector holder block.

  1. Install the heater hose.

  1. Connect the ECM connector and clamp.

    HINT:

    Refer to the following procedures to connect the ECM connector .

  1. Connect the purge line hose.

31. CONNECT FUEL MAIN AND RETURN HOSE
  1. Connect the fuel main and return hoses .

32. INSTALL RADIATOR ASSEMBLY

33. INSTALL FAN SHROUD

  1. Place the shroud together with the coupling fan between the radiator and engine.

    NOTICE:

    Be careful not to damage the radiator core.

  1. Temporarily install the fluid coupling fan to the fluid coupling bracket with the 4 nuts. Tighten the nuts as much as possible by hand.

39. ADD ENGINE COOLANT
  1. Add engine coolant.

    NOTICE:

    Do not substitute plain water for engine coolant.

    HINT:

    TOYOTA vehicles are filled with TOYOTA SLLC at the factory. In order to avoid damage to the engine cooling system and other technical problems, only use TOYOTA SLLC or similar high quality ethylene glycol based non-silicate, non-amine, non-nitrite, non-borate coolant with long-life hybrid organic acid technology (coolant with long-life hybrid organic acid technology consists of a combination of low phosphates and organic acids).

  1. Slowly pour coolant into the radiator reservoir until it reaches the F line.

  1. Install the reservoir cap.

  1. Press the No. 1 and No. 2 radiator hoses several times by hand, and then check the coolant level. If the coolant level is low, add coolant.

  1. Install the radiator cap.

  1. Start the engine and warm it up until the thermostat opens.

    HINT:

    The thermostat opening timing can be confirmed by pressing the radiator inlet hose by hand, and checking when the engine coolant starts to flow inside the hose.

  1. Maintain the engine speed at 2000 to 2500 rpm.

    NOTICE:

    1. Make sure that the radiator reservoir still has some coolant in it.
    2. Pay attention to the needle of the water temperature meter. Make sure that the needle does not show an abnormally high temperature.
    3. If there is not enough coolant, the engine may burn out or overheat.
    4. Immediately after starting the engine, if the radiator reservoir does not have any coolant, perform the following: 1) stop the engine, 2) wait until the coolant has cooled down, and 3) add coolant until the coolant is filled to the F line.
    5. Run the engine at 2000 rpm until the coolant level has stabilized.
  1. Press the No. 1 and No. 2 radiator hoses several times by hand to bleed air.

    CAUTION:

    1. Wear protective gloves.
    2. Be careful as the radiator hoses are hot.
    3. Keep your hands away from the fan.
  1. Stop the engine, and wait until the engine coolant cools down to ambient temperature.

    CAUTION:

    Do not remove the radiator cap while the engine and radiator are still hot. Pressurized, hot engine coolant and steam may be released and cause serious burns.

  1. Check that the coolant level is between the F and L lines.

    If the coolant level is below the L line, repeat all of the procedures above.

    If the coolant level is above the F line, drain coolant so that the coolant level is between the F and L lines.

40. CONNECT CABLE TO NEGATIVE BATTERY TERMINAL

NOTICE:

When disconnecting the cable, some systems need to be initialized after the cable is reconnected .

41. INSPECT FOR OIL LEAK
  1. Start the engine. Make sure that there are no oil leaks from the area that was worked on.

42. INSPECT FOR COOLANT LEAK

  1. Fill the radiator with coolant and attach a radiator cap tester.

  1. Warm up the engine.

  1. Using the radiator cap tester, increase the pressure inside the radiator to 123 kPa (1.3 kgf/cm2, 18 psi), and check that the pressure does not drop.

    If the pressure drops, check the hoses, radiator and water pump for leaks. If no external leaks are found, check the heater core, cylinder block and head.

43. INSPECT FOR EXHAUST GAS LEAK

If gas is leaking, tighten the areas necessary to stop the leak. Replace damaged parts as necessary.

44. INSPECT FOR FUEL LEAK
  1. Connect the intelligent tester to the DLC3.

  1. Turn the engine switch on (IG) and intelligent tester main switch on.

    NOTICE:

    Do not start the engine.

  1. Enter the following menus: Powertrain / Engine and ECT / Active Test / Control the Fuel Pump / Speed.

  1. Check that there are no fuel leaks after doing maintenance anywhere on the fuel system.

45. INSPECT SHIFT LEVER POSITION
  1. When moving the shift lever from P to R with the ignition switch ON and the brake pedal depressed, make sure that it moves smoothly and correctly into position.

  1. Check that the shift lever does not stop when moving the shift lever from R to P, and check that the shift lever does not stick when moving the shift lever from D to S.

  1. Start the engine and make sure that the vehicle moves forward after moving the shift lever from N to D and moves rearward after moving the shift lever to R.

    If the operation cannot be performed as specified, inspect the park/neutral position switch assembly and check the shift lever assembly installation condition.

46. INSTALL V-BANK COVER SUB-ASSEMBLY

3UR-FE Engine assembly - Installation. Attach the 2 V-bank cover hooks to the bracket. Then align the 3 V-bank cover grommets with the 3 pins, and press down on the V-bank cover to attach the pins.

  1. Attach the 2 V-bank cover hooks to the bracket. Then align the 3 V-bank cover grommets with the 3 pins, and press down on the V-bank cover to attach the pins.

  1. Install the No. 2 engine under cover with the 2 bolts.

  1. Install the No. 1 engine under cover with the 10 bolts.

    Torque:

  1. Install the hood with the 4 bolts.

  1. Connect the 2 hood supports with the 2 hood support bolts.

    Torque:

    18 N*m{ 184 kgf*cm , 13 ft.*lbf }

    CAUTION:

    Install the hood support while supporting the hood by hand.

    NOTICE:

    Check that the hood support is engaged in the ball joint and that it cannot be pulled out.

58. ADJUST HOOD SUB-ASSEMBLY
  1. Adjust the hood position.

    1. Loosen the 4 hinge bolts of the hood.

      3UR-FE Engine assembly - Installation. Loosen the 4 hinge bolts of the hood.

    2. Move the hood and adjust the clearance between the hood and front fender.

    3. Tighten the 4 hinge bolts of the hood after the adjustment.

      Torque:

      13 N*m{ 133 kgf*cm , 10 ft.*lbf }

    4. Adjust the cushion rubber so that the height of the hood and fender are aligned.

      3UR-FE Engine assembly - Installation. Adjust the cushion rubber so that the height of the hood and fender are aligned.

      HINT:

      Raise or lower the hood front end by turning the cushion rubber.

  1. Adjust the hood lock.

    1. Using a screwdriver, remove the hood lock nut cap as shown in the illustration.

      HINT:

      Tape the screwdriver tip before use.

    2. Loosen the 2 bolts and hood lock nut.

    4. Tighten the bolts and nut after the adjustment.

      Torque:

59. CONNECT RADIATOR SIDE DEFLECTOR LH
  1. Connect the deflector with the 4 clips.

60. INSTALL TRANSMISSION OIL COOLER AIR DUCT
  1. Install the oil cooler air duct with the 4 bolts.

    Torque:

    4.9 N*m{ 50 kgf*cm , 43 in.*lbf }

61. INSTALL FRONT BUMPER COVER

HINT:

For the front bumper cover with garnish, use the procedures described below.

  1. w/ Headlight Cleaner System:

    Connect the headlight cleaner hose.

    3UR-FE Engine assembly - Installation. Connect the headlight cleaner hose.

  1. w/o TOYOTA Parking Assist-sensor System, w/o Fog Light:

    Attach the 10 claws to install the bumper cover.

  1. w/ TOYOTA Parking Assist-sensor System or w/ Fog Light:

    Connect the No. 4 engine room wire connector and attach the 10 claws to install the bumper cover.

  1. Install the 3 clips, 4 screws and 4 bolts.

  1. Using a T30 "TORX" socket, install the 6 screws.

62. INSTALL RADIATOR GRILLE

64. INSPECT IGNITION TIMING
  1. Warm up and stop the engine.

    1. Allow the engine to warm up to a normal operating temperature.

  1. When using the intelligent tester:

    1. Connect the intelligent tester to the DLC3.

    2. Start the engine and idle it.

    3. Turn the intelligent tester on.

    4. Enter the following menus: Powertrain / Engine and ECT / Data List / Primary / IGN Advance.

      HINT:

      Refer to the intelligent tester operator's manual for further details.

      Standard ignition timing:

      8 to 12° BTDC @ idling (transmission in neutral and A/C switch off)

    5. Disconnect the intelligent tester from the DLC3.

  1. When not using the intelligent tester:

    1. Connect the tester probe of a timing light to the wire of the ignition coil connector for the No. 1 cylinder.

      NOTICE:

      Use a timing light that detects primary signals.

    2. Using SST, connect terminals 13 (TC) and 4 (CG) of the DLC3.

    6. Disconnect the timing light from the engine.

  1. Warm up and stop the engine.

  1. When using the intelligent tester:

    1. Connect the intelligent tester to the DLC3.

      NOTICE:

      Switch off all accessories and the A/C before connecting the intelligent tester.

    2. Race the engine at 2500 rpm for approximately 90 seconds.

    3. Turn the intelligent tester on.

    4. Enter the following menus: Powertrain / Engine and ECT / Data List / Primary / Engine Speed.

      Standard idle speed:

      650 to 750 rpm (transmission in neutral and A/C switch off)

      HINT:

      Refer to the intelligent tester operator's manual for further details.

      If the idle speed is not as specified, check the air intake system.

    5. Disconnect the intelligent tester from the DLC3.

  1. When not using the intelligent tester:

    1. Using SST, connect the tachometer probe to terminal 9 (TAC) of the DLC3.

      NOTICE:

66. INSPECT CO/HC

HINT:

This check is used only to determine whether or not the idle CO/HC complies with regulations.

  1. Start the engine.

  1. Keep the engine speed at 2500 rpm for approximately 180 seconds.

  1. Insert the CO/HC meter testing probe at least 40 cm (1.31 ft.) into the tailpipe during idling.

  1. Immediately check CO/HC concentration at idle and/or 2500 rpm.

    HINT:

    When performing the 2 mode (2500 rpm and idle) test, follow the measurement order prescribed by the applicable local regulations.

  1. If the CO/HC concentration does not comply with the regulations, troubleshoot in the order given below.

    1. Check the A/F sensor and heated oxygen sensor operation.

    2. See the table below for possible causes, and then inspect and correct the applicable causes if necessary.

        1. Faulty pressure regulator
        2. Defective engine coolant temperature sensor
        3. Faulty ECM
        4. Faulty injectors
        5. Faulty throttle position sensor
        6. Faulty mass air flow meter

67. INSPECT ENGINE OIL LEVEL
  1. Warm up the engine, stop the engine and wait 5 minutes. The oil level should be between the dipstick low level mark and full level mark.

    If low, check for leakage and add oil up to the full level mark.

    NOTICE:

    Do not fill engine oil above the full level mark.

68. INSPECT ENGINE COOLANT LEVEL
  1. Check that the engine coolant level is between the L and F lines when the engine is cold.

    If the engine coolant is below the L line, check for leaks and add "TOYOTA Super Long Life Coolant" or similar high quality ethylene glycol based non-silicate, non-amine, non-nitrite and non-borate coolant with long-life hybrid organic acid technology to the F line.

    NOTICE:

    Do not substitute plain water for engine coolant.
