Engine -- On-Vehicle Inspection


УКАЗАНИЕ:
The type of ignition switch on this model differs according to the specifications of the vehicle. For the expressions used in this section, refer to the "EXPRESSIONS OF IGNITION SWITCH" precaution (see page RAV4_ACA30 RM00000215G000X.html).


1. INSPECT ENGINE IDLE SPEED
ПРИМЕЧАНИЕ:
When checking the idle speed, shift the transmission to the neutral position.
УКАЗАНИЕ:
  1. For more information about the intelligent tester, refer to its operator's manual.
  2. If an intelligent tester is not available, use a tachometer's tester probe as a substitute.

  1. Warm up and stop the engine.

  1. Connect the intelligent tester to the DLC3.

  1. Turn the ignition switch on (IG).

  1. Select the item:
    Powertrain / Engine / Data List / Engine SPD.

    УКАЗАНИЕ:
    Refer to the intelligent tester operator's manual if you need help to select Data List.

  1. Inspect the engine idle speed.

    УКАЗАНИЕ:
    1. Turn all the electrical system and the A/C OFF.
    2. Inspect the engine idle speed with the cooling fan OFF.
    Standard idle speed:
    750 to 850 rpm

  1. Turn the ignition switch off.

  1. Disconnect the intelligent tester from the DLC3.



2. INSPECT MAXIMUM ENGINE SPEED

  1. Start the engine.

  1. Depress the accelerator pedal to the limit.

  1. Check the maximum engine speed.

    Maximum engine speed:
    5,100 to 5,250 rpm


3. INSPECT COMPRESSION

  1. Warm up and stop the engine.

  1. Disconnect the connectors from the injectors.

  1. Remove the glow plugs (see page RAV4_ACA30 RM00000167T006X.html).



  1. Inspect the cylinder compression pressure.

    1. Insert SST (attachment) into the grow plug hole.

    2. Connect SST (compression gauge) to the SST (attachment).

    3. While cranking the engine, measure the compression pressure.

      Standard compression pressure (Normal condition):
      2,700 kPa (27.5 kgf/cm2, 391 psi)
      Minimum pressure:
      2,200 kPa (22.5 kgf/cm2, 320 psi)
      Difference between each cylinder:
      500 kPa (5.0 kgf/cm2, 71 psi) or less
      ПРИМЕЧАНИЕ:
      1. Use a fully-charged battery so the engine speed can be increased to 250 rpm or more.
      2. Inspect the other cylinders in the same way.
      3. Measure the compression as quickly as possible.

    4. If the cylinder compression is low, pour a light coat of engine oil into the cylinder through the glow plug holes, then inspect it again.

      УКАЗАНИЕ:
      1. If adding oil increases the compression, the piston rings and/or cylinder bore may be worn or damaged.
      2. If pressure stays low, the valve may be stuck or seated improperly, or there may be leakage from the gasket.

  1. Remove the SST (attachment and compression gauge).

  1. Connect the connectors to the injectors.

  1. Install the glow plugs (see page RAV4_ACA30 RM00000167S006X.html).
