Do not remove the radiator cap while the engine and radiator are still hot. Pressurized, hot engine coolant and steam may be released and cause serious burns.

Remove the radiator cap and reservoir tank cap.

Loosen the radiator drain cock plug and 2 cylinder block drain cock plugs. Then drain the coolant.

HINT:

Collect the coolant in a container and dispose of it according to the regulations in your area.

8. DRAIN AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION FLUID

Remove the drain plug and gasket, and drain the ATF.

Install a new gasket and the drain plug.

Torque:
20 N*m{ 204 kgf*cm, 15 ft.*lbf}

9. REMOVE REAR NO. 1 FLOOR PANEL BRACE

Remove the 4 bolts and rear No. 1 floor panel brace.

10. REMOVE FRONT CENTER FLOOR BRACE

Remove the 4 bolts and front center floor brace .

11. REMOVE OXYGEN SENSOR

Remove the grommets of the heated oxygen sensors (BANK 1, BANK 2).

Using the SST, remove a oxygen sensors (BANK 1, BANK 2).

12. REMOVE FRONT EXHAUST PIPE ASSEMBLY

Remove the 4 bolts and 4 nuts.

Remove the 2 bolts and 2 compression springs from the tail exhaust pipe assembly.

Remove the front exhaust pipe assembly and 3 gaskets.

13. REMOVE FRONT FLOOR NO. 1 HEAT INSULATOR

Remove the 4 nuts and front No. 1 floor heat insulator.

14. REMOVE OUTSIDE AIR GUIDE PLATE RH

Remove the 4 nuts and outside air guide plate RH.

15. REMOVE PROPELLER SHAFT WITH CENTER BEARING ASSEMBLY

Put matchmarks on both flanges.

Remove the 4 nuts, bolts and washers.

HINT:

If the flange connection is hard to separate, temporarily tighten one nut only and evenly tap the flange with a brass bar and hammer to separate the propeller shaft assembly from the differential companion flange.

Remove the 2 bolts and 2 center support bearing washers. (for automatic transmission)

Remove the 2 bolts, 2 center support bearing washers and 2 center support bearing dampers. (for manual transmission)

Separate the center support bearing.

Insert SST in the transmission to prevent oil leakage.

NOTICE:

Be careful not to damage the oil seal.

16. REMOVE EXHAUST MANIFOLD SUB-ASSEMBLY LH

Remove the 2 bolts and ground cable.

Remove the bolt and engine wire bracket.

Disconnect the air fuel ratio sensor (for sensor 1) connector.

Remove the 6 nuts, exhaust manifold and gasket.

17. REMOVE STARTER ASSEMBLY

Disconnect the terminal 50 connector from the starter assembly.

Detach the terminal cap.

Remove the nut and disconnect the wire harness from terminal 30.

Remove the 2 bolts and starter.

18. REMOVE FLYWHEEL HOUSING SIDE COVER

Remove the flywheel housing side cover from the engine assembly.

19. REMOVE DRIVE PLATE & TORQUE CONVERTER CLUTCH SETTING BOLT

Turn the crankshaft to gain access to each bolt.

Hold the crankshaft pulley nut with a wrentch and remove the 6 torque converter clutch setting bolts.

20. REMOVE NO. 1 EXHAUST PIPE SUPPORT BRACKET SUB-ASSEMBLY

Remove the 2 bolts and No. 1 exhaust pipe support bracket sub-assembly from the automatic transmission assembly.

21. SEPARATE FLOOR SHIFT GEAR SHIFTING ROD SUB-ASSEMBLY

Set the shift lever to the neutral position.

Remove the nut, and separate the floor shift gear shifting rod sub-assembly.

22. SUPPORT AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION ASSEMBLY

Support the automatic transmission assembly with a transmission jack.

23. REMOVE ENGINE REAR MOUNTING MEMBER

Remove the 4 bolts, and separate the engine rear mounting member from the body.

Remove the 4 nuts and engine rear mounting member from the automatic transmission assembly.

24. SEPARATE CONNECTOR

Tilt down the automatic transmission assembly.

Disconnect the park/neutral position start switch connector, transmission wire connector and 2 transmission revolution sensor connectors.

HINT:

Disengage the claw, press down the lever, and then disconnect the transmission wire connector.

25. SEPARATE WIRE HARNESS

Remove the 2 bolts and separate the wire harness clamps from the automatic transmission assembly.

26. SEPARATE WATER BY-PASS HOSE

Remove the bolt and water by-pass hose clamp.

Separate the 2 water by-pass hoses from the transmission oil cooler.

NOTICE:

Use a container to catch any coolant which flows out of the water by-pass hoses.

27. REMOVE AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION ASSEMBLY

Remove the 9 bolts and automatic transmission assembly.

NOTICE:

Do not use excess force to pry on the transmission assembly.

28. REMOVE REAR NO. 1 ENGINE MOUNTING INSULATOR

Remove the 4 bolts and rear No. 1 engine mounting insulator from the automatic transmission assembly.

29. REMOVE TRANSMISSION CONTROL SHAFT LEVER RH

Remove the nut and transmission control shaft lever RH from the park/neutral position switch assembly.

30. REMOVE TRANSMISSION OIL COOLER

Remove the 3 bolts and transmission oil cooler from the automatic transmission assembly.

Remove the 2 O-rings.

31. REMOVE TORQUE CONVERTER CLUTCH ASSEMBLY

Put matchmarks on the torque converter and transmission case.

Remove the torque converter from the automatic transmission assembly.

32. INSPECT TORQUE CONVERTER CLUTCH ASSEMBLY

Inspect the one-way clutch.

Install SST so that it fits in a notch of the converter hub and a notch of the outer race of the one-way clutch.

Press on the serrations of the stator with a finger and rotate the starter.

Check that it rotates smoothly when turned clockwise and locks up when turned counterclockwise.

If necessary, clean the converter and retest the one-way clutch.

Replace the converter if the one-way clutch still fails the test.

Determine the condition of the torque converter clutch assembly.

If the inspection result of the torque converter clutch assembly meets the following item, replace the torque converter clutch.

Malfunction Item:
Any metallic sound is heard from the torque converter clutch during a stall test or when the shift lever is in the N position.
The one-way clutch is free or locked in both directions.
Fine powder exceeding the sample limit is identified in ATF. (See the sample.)

HINT:

The sample shows approx. 0.25 liters (0.26 US qts, 0.22 lmp. qts) of ATF that is taken out from the removed torque converter clutch.

Replace the ATF in the torque converter clutch.

If the ATF is discolored and/or has a foul odor, completely stir the ATF in the torque converter clutch and drain it.

Clean and check the oil cooler and oil pipe line.

If the torque converter clutch is inspected or the ATF is changed, clean the oil cooler and oil pipe line.

HINT:

Apply compressed air of 196 kpa (2 kgf/cm², 28 psi) from the inlet hose.

If a lot of fine powder is found in the ATF, add new ATF using a bucket pump and clean it again.

If the ATF is cloudy, inspect the oil cooler (radiator).

Prevent deformation of the torque converter clutch.

When there is any damage to the end of the bolt for the torque converter clutch and to the bottom of the bolt hole, replace the bolt and the torque converter clutch.

All of the bolts have to be the same length.
