MAINTENANCE PRECAUTION

Do not stop the engine immediately after pulling a trailer, driving at a high speed, or uphill drive. Let the engine idle for 20 to 120 seconds before turning the ignition switch OFF (Depending on the driving condition, the idling time varies).

Avoid quick acceleration or quickly accelerating the engine RPM immediately after starting a cold engine.

If the turbocharger is found to be defective, it must be replaced. It is also necessary to determine the reason for the failure of the turbocharger, in order to prevent failure of the new turbocharger. Check the repair problems relating to the following:

Use care when removing, reinstalling or handling the turbocharger assembly. Do not drop, or allow the turbocharger to receive impacts. Do not use easily deformed parts of the turbocharger to carry, lift, or hold the turbocharger when removing or reinstalling it.

While removing the turbocharger, be sure to cover any openings (oil, coolant, air or exhaust) in order to prevent entry of dirt or foreign objects.

If replacing the turbocharger, check for deposits in the oil pipe. If necessary, replace the oil pipe.

Thoroughly remove the old gasket that is sticking to the lubrication oil pipe flange and the turbocharger oil flange.

If replacing the bolt(s) or nut(s), use Toyota genuine parts to prevent breakage or deformation.

If replacing the turbocharger, put 20 cm³ (1.2 cu in.) of fresh oil into the turbocharger oil inlet hole and turn the turbine wheel by hand to spread oil to the bearing.

If overhauling or replacing the engine, cut the fuel supply after reassembly and crank the engine for 30 seconds to feed oil throughout the engine. Then allow the engine to idle for 60 seconds.

Do not run the engine without all parts of the air intake system (air cleaner, case cover and hose) connected. The turbine wheels run at extremely high speeds, and they may be damaged if foreign objects or particles enter the turbo when the engine is operating.
