Rear Differential Carrier Oil Seal -- Replacement |
1. DRAIN DIFFERENTIAL OIL |
Stop the vehicle on a level place.
for Front Differential:
Remove the engine under cover.
Using a 10 mm hexagon wrench, remove the filler plug and gasket.
Using a 10 mm hexagon wrench, remove the drain plug and gasket, and drain the oil.
Using a 10 mm hexagon wrench, install a new gasket and the drain plug.
- Torque:
- 39 N*m{400 kgf*cm, 29 ft.*lbf}

for Rear Differential:
Remove the filler plug and gasket.
Remove the drain plug and gasket, and drain the oil.
Install a new gasket and the drain plug.
- Torque:
- 49 N*m{500 kgf*cm, 36 ft.*lbf}
2. DISCONNECT PROPELLER SHAFT ASSEMBLY |
Place matchmarks on the rear propeller shaft and companion flange.

Remove the 4 nuts, 4 washers and 4 bolts, and disconnect the propeller shaft from the differential side.
Support the propeller shaft securely.
3. REMOVE DRIVE PINION COMPANION FLANGE REAR NUT |
Using SST and a hammer, loosen the staked part of the nut.

4. REMOVE REAR DRIVE PINION COMPANION FLANGE REAR SUB-ASSEMBLY |
Using SST, remove the companion flange.

5. REMOVE REAR DIFFERENTIAL CARRIER OIL SEAL |
Using SST, remove the oil seal.

6. REMOVE REAR DIFFERENTIAL DRIVE PINION OIL SLINGER |
7. REMOVE REAR DRIVE PINION FRONT TAPERED ROLLER BEARING |
Using SST, remove the front bearing (inner race) from the drive pinion.

Using SST, remove the front bearing (outer race) from the drive pinion.
- SST

8. REPLACE REAR DIFFERENTIAL DRIVE PINION BEARING SPACER |
Replace the bearing spacer with a new one.

9. INSTALL REAR DRIVE PINION FRONT TAPERED ROLLER BEARING |
Using SST and a hammer, tap in the bearing (outer race).
- SST
- 09316-60011(09316-00011,09316-00021)

Install the bearing (inner race).
10. INSTALL REAR DIFFERENTIAL DRIVE PINION OIL SLINGER |
11. INSTALL REAR DIFFERENTIAL CARRIER OIL SEAL |
Using SST and a hammer, tap in a new oil seal.
- SST
- 09214-76011
- Standard oil seal depth:
- 0.05 to 0.95 mm (0.00197 to 0.0374 in.)

Coat the lip of the oil seal with MP grease.
12. INSTALL REAR DRIVE PINION COMPANION FLANGE REAR SUB-ASSEMBLY |
Using SST, install the companion flange to the drive pinion.
- SST
- 09950-30012(09951-03010,09953-03010,09954-03010,09955-03030,09956-03040)

13. ADJUST DRIVE PINION PRELOAD |
Coat the threads of a new nut with hypoid gear oil.
Using SST to hold the companion flange in place, then slowly tighten the nut within the drive pinion preload adjustment range so that it reaches the specified drive pinion preload (at Starting).
- SST
- 09330-00021(09330-00030)
- Limit Torque Value:
- 441 N*m (4497 kgf*cm, 325 ft.*lbf) or less

Using a torque wrench, measure the preload.
- Standard Preload (at Starting):
Bearing Specified Condition New 1.04 to 1.69 N*m (11 to 17 kgf*cm, 10 to 14 in.*lbf) Reused 0.85 to 1.37 N*m (9 to 13 kgf*cm, 8 to 12 in.*lbf)

14. INSPECT TOTAL PRELOAD (for Standard) |
Using a torque wrench, measure the preload with the teeth of the drive pinion and ring gear in contact.
- Standard Drive Pinion Preload (at Starting):
Bearing Specified Condition New 1.42 to 2.32 N*m (15 to 23 kgf*cm, 13 to 20 in.*lbf) Reused 1.23 to 2.00 N*m (13 to 20 kgf*cm, 11 to 17 in.*lbf)

15. INSPECT TOTAL PRELOAD (for LSD) |
Using a torque wrench, measure the preload with the teeth of the drive pinion and ring gear in contact.
- Standard Drive Pinion Preload (at Starting):
Bearing Specified Condition New 1.42 to 2.32 N*m (15 to 23 kgf*cm, 13 to 20 in.*lbf) Reused 1.23 to 2.00 N*m (13 to 20 kgf*cm, 11 to 17 in.*lbf)

16. INSPECT TOTAL PRELOAD (w/ Differential Lock) |
Using a torque wrench, measure the preload with the teeth of the drive pinion and ring gear in contact.
- Standard Preload (at Starting):
Bearing Specified Condition New 1.33 to 2.18 N*m (14 to 22 kgf*cm, 12 to 19 in.*lbf) Reused 1.14 to 1.86 N*m (12 to 18 kgf*cm, 11 to 16 in.*lbf)

17. STAKE DRIVE PINION COMPANION FLANGE REAR NUT |
Using a chisel and hammer, stake the nut.

18. CONNECT PROPELLER SHAFT ASSEMBLY |
Align the matchmarks on the propeller shaft flange and transfer.

Connect the propeller shaft with the 4 washers and 4 nuts.
- Torque:
- 88 N*m{900 kgf*cm, 65 ft.*lbf}
Align the matchmarks on the propeller shaft flange and rear differential.

Install the propeller shaft with the 4 bolts, 4 washers and 4 nuts.
- Torque:
- 88 N*m{900 kgf*cm, 65 ft.*lbf}
19. ADD DIFFERENTIAL OIL |
Add differential oil so that the oil level is between 0 to 5 mm (0 to 0.197 in.) from the bottom lip of the differential filler plug hole.
- NOTICE:
- Too much or too little oil will lead to differential problems.
- After changing the oil, drive the vehicle and then check the oil level again.
- Front differential oil type and viscosity:
- Toyota Genuine Differential gear oil LT 75W-85 GL-5 or equivalent
- Rear Differential Oil Type and Viscosity:
Item Oil Type and Viscosity w/o LSD Toyota Genuine Differential gear oil LT 75W-85 GL-5 or equivalent w/ LSD Toyota Genuine Differential gear oil LX 75W-85 GL-5 or equivalent
- Front differential capacity:
- 1.85 to 1.95 liters (1.96 to 2.06 US qts., 1.63 to 1.71 Imp. qts.)
- Rear Differential Capacity:
Item Specified Condition Standard 4.15 to 4.25 liters (4.39 to 4.49 US qts., 3.66 to 3.74 Imp. qts.) w/ LSD 4.10 to 4.20 liters (4.34 to 4.43 US qts., 3.60 to 3.69 Imp. qts.) w/ Differential lock
