Cylinder Head Gasket (For Hatchback) -- Removal


NOTICE:
After turning the ignition switch off, waiting time may be required before disconnecting the cable from the battery terminal. Therefore, make sure to read the disconnecting the cable from the battery terminal notice before proceeding with work (YARIS_NCP93 RM00000482L007X.html).


1. DISCHARGE FUEL SYSTEM PRESSURE

2. REMOVE FRONT WHEEL RH


3. REMOVE ENGINE UNDER COVER RH


4. DRAIN ENGINE OIL
  1. Remove the oil filler cap.

  1. Remove the oil pan drain plug and drain the engine oil.

  1. Clean the drain plug.

  1. Install the drain plug with a new gasket.

    Torque:
    38 N*m{382 kgf*cm, 28 ft.*lbf}


5. DRAIN ENGINE COOLANT
NOTICE:
To avoid the danger of being burned, do not remove the radiator cap sub-assembly while the engine and radiator assembly are still hot. Thermal expansion will cause hot engine coolant and steam to blow out from the radiator assembly.
  1. Loosen the radiator drain cock plug.

  1. Remove the radiator cap sub-assembly.



  1. Loosen the cylinder block drain cock plug, then drain the coolant.

8. REMOVE FRONT NO. 1 VENTILATOR SEAL

  1. Disengage the 3 claws and remove the front air shutter seal RH.



9. REMOVE FRONT AIR SHUTTER SEAL RH
HINT:
Use the same procedure as for the No. 1 ventilator seal.


10. REMOVE INNER COWL TOP TO COWL BRACE

  1. Remove the 2 bolts and the inner cowl top to cowl brace.



11. REMOVE OUTER COWL TOP PANEL

  1. Disengage the wire harness clamp.

12. REMOVE BATTERY

  1. Remove the 2 nuts and the battery clamp.

  1. Disengage the clamp and disconnect the fuel vapor feed hose assembly from the No. 1 air cleaner hose.

  1. Loosen the 2 hose clamps and disconnect the fuel vapor feed hose assembly from the No. 1 air cleaner hose and vacuum switching valve assembly.

  1. Disconnect the No. 2 fuel vapor feed hose from the intake manifold.

  1. Disengage the 2 clamps and disconnect the wire harness from the air cleaner cap sub-assembly and vacuum switching valve assembly.

  1. Disconnect the mass air flow meter connector.

  1. Disconnect the vacuum switching valve connector.

  1. Loosen the hose clamp and disconnect the No. 1 air cleaner hose from the throttle with motor body assembly.

  1. Disengage the 2 clamps and remove the air cleaner cap sub-assembly with No. 1 air cleaner hose.



15. REMOVE NO. 1 IGNITION COIL

16. DISCONNECT NO. 3 RADIATOR HOSE

  1. Disconnect No. 3 radiator hose.



17. DISCONNECT RESERVE TANK HOSE

18. REMOVE WATER FILLER SUB-ASSEMBLY

  1. Separate No. 1 radiator hose from the cylinder head.

  1. Remove the 2 nuts and the water filler sub-assembly.



19. DISCONNECT NO. 2 WATER BY-PASS HOSE

20. DISCONNECT WATER BY-PASS HOSE

  1. Disengage the clamp and disconnect the wire harness from the wire harness bracket.

  1. Remove the nut and disconnect the wire harness from the throttle body assembly.

  1. Disconnect the throttle body assembly connector.



22. DISCONNECT VENTILATION HOSE

  1. Disconnect the ventilation hose.



23. DISCONNECT UNION TO CONNECTOR TUBE HOSE

  1. Remove the EFI fuel pipe clamp.

  1. Pinch the retainer of the fuel tube connector, then pull the fuel tube connector to disconnect the fuel tube out of the fuel delivery pipe sub-assembly.

    NOTICE:
    1. Remove any dirt and foreign matter from the fuel tube connector before performing this work.
    2. Do not allow any scratches or foreign matter on the parts when disconnecting, as the fuel tube connector has the O-ring that seals the pipe.
    3. Perform this work by hand. Do not use any tools.
    4. Do not forcibly bend, twist or turn the nylon tube.
    5. Protect the disconnected parts by covering them with a vinyl bag after disconnecting the fuel tube.
    6. If the fuel tube connector and pipe are stuck, push and pull to release them.

  1. Disconnect the booster vacuum tube.

  1. Remove the bolts and separate the sensor bracket.

  1. Disconnect the air fuel ratio sensor connector.



32. DISCONNECT INLET HEATER WATER HOSE A

33. SEPARATE NO. 1 WATER BY-PASS PIPE

  1. Remove the bolt and separate No. 1 water by-pass pipe.



34. DISCONNECT WIRE HARNESS

  1. Remove the 2 bolts and disconnect the wire harness.



35. SEPARATE FRONT EXHAUST PIPE ASSEMBLY

  1. Remove the 2 bolts and 2 compression springs and separate the front exhaust pipe assembly.



36. REMOVE EXHAUST PIPE GASKET
  1. Remove the No. 2 exhaust pipe gasket from the front exhaust pipe assembly.

  1. Remove the 9 bolts, 2 nuts and 2 seal washers and then remove the cylinder head cover sub-assembly.

  1. Place a wooden block on a jack underneath the engine.

  1. Remove the 4 bolts, 2 nuts and the engine mounting insulator sub-assembly RH.



43. REMOVE CRANKSHAFT DAMPER SUB-ASSEMBLY

  1. Set the No. 1 cylinder to TDC/compression.

    1. Turn the crankshaft damper sub-assembly, and align its timing notch with timing mark "0" of the oil pump.

  1. Do not rotate the crankshaft with the chain tensioner removed.
  2. When rotating the camshaft with the timing chain removed, rotate the crankshaft counterclockwise 40° from the TDC first, and align the oil jet hole with the paint mark. This prevents the pistons from coming into contact with the valves.

  1. Using several steps, uniformly loosen and remove the 19 bearing cap bolts in the sequence shown in the illustration, and then remove No. 1 camshaft bearing cap and No. 2 camshaft bearing cap.

    NOTICE:
    Loosen each bolt uniformly while keeping the camshaft level.
  1. Remove the camshaft and No. 2 camshaft.



56. REMOVE CYLINDER HEAD SUB-ASSEMBLY

  1. Using several steps, uniformly loosen and remove the 10 cylinder head bolts with an 8 mm bi-hexagon wrench in the sequence shown in the illustration. Remove the 10 plate washers.

    NOTICE:
    1. Do not drop the washers into the cylinder head.
    2. Head warpage or cracking could result from removing the bolts in the wrong order.
