Continuously Variable Transaxle System -- System Description

SYSTEM DESCRIPTION
  1. The Continuously Variable Transaxle (CVT) is an automatic transaxle that electronically controls shift timing using the Engine Control Module (ECM). The ECM detects electrical signals that indicate engine and driving conditions, and controls shift points based on driver habits and road conditions.
In addition, the CVT has the following features:

    1. Diagnostic function
    2. Fail-safe function when a malfunction occurs

FUNCTION OF MAIN COMPONENTS

Component
Outline
Shift solenoid valve DS1
Controls the oil flow to the primary pulley according to the vehicle speed and accelerator pedal position.
Shift solenoid valve DS2
Controls the oil flow from the primary pulley according to the vehicle speed and accelerator pedal position.
Shift solenoid valve SL
Switches the usage of shift solenoid valve SLS.
Shift solenoid valve DSU
Controls the oil pressure for lock-up clutch engagement.
Shift solenoid valve SLS
Controls belt clamping pressure according to the input torque. Moreover, while the forward and reverse clutch is engaged, it controls the forward and reverse clutch oil pressure.
Transmission revolution sensor (NIN)
Detects the primary pulley revolution speed.
Transmission revolution sensor (NOUT)
Detects the secondary pulley revolution speed.
Transmission revolution sensor (NT)
Detects the input turbine revolution speed.
CVT oil temperature sensor
Detects the CVT fluid temperature.
CVT oil pressure sensor
Detects the CVT oil pressure for belt clamping force.
Engine coolant temperature sensor
Detects the engine coolant temperature.
Throttle position sensor
Detects the opening of the throttle valve.
Stop light switch
Detects the state of the brake pedal.
Park/neutral position switch
Detects the position of the shift lever.
ECM
Controls the transmission based on the signal from each sensor. It has a diagnosis mode and fail-safe functions as a service when the system has malfunctioned.
DLC3
Used for connecting the diagnosis tool to read diagnostic trouble code and ECM data.
