Differential Case -- Disassembly |
1. REMOVE FRONT DIFFERENTIAL RING GEAR |
Place matchmarks on the front differential ring gear and front differential case.

Remove the 12 bolts.
Using a plastic-faced hammer, remove the front differential ring gear from the front differential case.
2. INSPECT FRONT DIFFERENTIAL SIDE GEAR BACKLASH |
Using a dial indicator, measure the front differential side gear backlash.
- Standard backlash:
- 0.05 to 0.20 mm (0.00197 to 0.00787 in.)
If the backlash is not as specified, replace the side gear thrust washers with washers of a different thickness. Use the table below to select a side gear thrust washer which will ensure that the backlash is within the specification.
- Standard Thrust Washer Thickness:
Mark
| Specified Condition
|
1
| 1.00 mm (0.0394 in.)
|
2
| 1.10 mm (0.0433 in.)
|
3
| 1.20 mm (0.0472 in.)
|
4
| 1.30 mm (0.0511 in.)
|
- HINT:
- Select washers of the same thickness for both the right and left sides.
3. REMOVE FRONT DIFFERENTIAL PINION SHAFT STRAIGHT PIN |
Using SST and a hammer, loosen the staked part of the front differential case.
- SST
- 09930-00010
Using a 5 mm pin punch and hammer, tap out the front differential pinion shaft straight pin from the front differential case.
4. REMOVE FRONT NO. 1 DIFFERENTIAL PINION SHAFT |
Remove the front No. 1 differential pinion shaft from the front differential case.
5. REMOVE FRONT DIFFERENTIAL SIDE GEAR |
Remove the 2 front differential pinions, 2 front differential pinion thrust washers, 2 front No. 1 differential side gear thrust washers and 2 front differential side gears from the front differential case.
- HINT:
- While rotating the front differential side gears, remove the 2 pinions and 2 pinion thrust washers.
