DTC P0015 Camshaft Position "B" - Timing Over-Retarded (Bank 1) |
DESCRIPTION
- HINT:
- If DTC P0014 or P0015 is output, check the VVT (Variable Valve Timing) system.
Refer to DTC P0013 (RAV4_ACA30 RM000000XH7051X_01.html).DTC No.
| DTC Detection Condition
| Trouble Area
|
P0014
| The valve timing is not adjusted in the exhaust valve timing advance range (2 trip detection logic).
| - Valve timing
- Camshaft timing oil control valve assembly for exhaust camshaft
- Exhaust camshaft timing gear assembly
- ECM
|
P0015
| The valve timing is not adjusted in the exhaust valve timing retard range (1 trip detection logic).
| - Valve timing
- Camshaft timing oil control valve assembly for exhaust camshaft
- Exhaust camshaft timing gear assembly
- ECM
|
WIRING DIAGRAM
Refer to DTC P0010 (RAV4_ACA30 RM000000PDW08KX_07.html).
INSPECTION PROCEDURE
- HINT:
- Read freeze frame data using the intelligent tester. Freeze frame data records the engine conditions when malfunctions are detected. When troubleshooting, freeze frame data can help determine if the vehicle was moving or stationary, if the engine was warmed up or not, if the air fuel ratio was lean or rich, and other data from the time the malfunction occurred.
1.CHECK ANY OTHER DTCS OUTPUT (IN ADDITION TO DTC P0014 OR P0015) |
Connect the intelligent tester to the DLC3.
Turn the ignition switch to ON.
Turn the tester on.
Enter the following menus: Powertrain / Engine and ECT / DTC.
Read the DTCs.

DTC P0014 or P0015 is output
| A
|
DTC P0014 or P0015 and other DTCs are output
| B
|
- HINT:
- If any DTCs other than P0014 or P0015 are output, troubleshoot those DTCs first.
2.INSPECT CAMSHAFT TIMING OIL CONTROL VALVE ASSEMBLY |
Remove the camshaft timing oil control valve assembly.
Measure the resistance according to the value(s) in the table below.
- Standard Resistance:

1 - 2
| 20°C (68°F)
| 6.9 to 7.9 Ω

|
Apply positive (+) battery voltage to terminal 1 and negative (-) battery voltage to terminal 2. Check the valve operation.
- OK:
- Valve moves quickly.
Reinstall the camshaft timing oil control valve assembly.
3.INSPECT CAMSHAFT TIMING GEAR ASSEMBLY |
Inspect the camshaft timing gear assembly (RAV4_ACA30 RM0000027IB01JX_03_0382.html).
- HINT:
- There are no marks on the cylinder head to align for the purpose of checking valve timing. Valve timing can only be inspected by aligning the colored plates on the timing chain with the marks on the pulleys. It may be necessary to remove and reinstall the chain to align the timing marks (RAV4_ACA30 RM0000027I901JX_03_0377.html).
5.CHECK WHETHER DTC OUTPUT RECURS (DTC P0014 OR P0015) |
Connect the intelligent tester to the DLC3.
Turn the ignition switch to ON.
Turn the tester on.
Clear the DTCs (RAV4_ACA30 RM000000PDK0BLX.html).
Start the engine and warm it up.
Switch the ECM from normal mode to check mode using the tester.
Drive the vehicle for more than 10 minutes.
Enter the following menus: Powertrain / Engine and ECT / DTC.
Read the DTCs.

DTC P0014 or P0015 is output
| B
|
- HINT:
- DTC P0014 or P0015 is output when foreign objects in the engine oil are caught in some parts of the system. These codes remain stored for a short time even after the system returns to normal. These foreign objects are then captured by the oil filter, thus eliminating the source of the problem.
