DTC P0017 Crankshaft Position - Camshaft Position Correlation (Bank 1 Sensor B) |
DESCRIPTION
In the VVT system, the appropriate intake and exhaust valve open and close timing is controlled by the ECM. The ECM performs intake and exhaust valve control by performing the following: 1) controlling the camshaft and camshaft timing oil control valve, and operating the camshaft timing gear; and 2) changing the relative positions of the camshaft and crankshaft.DTC No. | DTC Detection Condition | Trouble Area |
P0016 | A deviation in the crankshaft position sensor signal and VVT sensor (for intake camshaft (bank 1)) signal (2 trip detection logic). |
|
P0017 | A deviation in the crankshaft position sensor signal and VVT sensor (for exhaust camshaft (bank 1)) signal (2 trip detection logic). |
|
- To monitor the correlation of the intake camshaft position and crankshaft position, the ECM checks the VVT learned value while the engine is idling. The VVT learned value is calibrated based on the camshaft position and crankshaft position. The intake valve timing is set to the most retarded angle while the engine is idling. If the VVT learned value is out of the specified range in consecutive driving cycles, the ECM illuminates the MIL and stores DTC P0016.
- To monitor the correlation of the exhaust camshaft position and crankshaft position, the ECM checks the VVT learned value while the engine is idling. The VVT learned value is calibrated based on the camshaft position and crankshaft position. The exhaust valve timing is set to the most advanced angle while the engine is idling. If the VVT learned value is out of the specified range in consecutive driving cycles, the ECM illuminates the MIL and stores DTC P0017.

INSPECTION PROCEDURE
- HINT:
- Read freeze frame data using the intelligent tester. The ECM records vehicle and driving condition information as freeze frame data the moment a DTC is stored. When troubleshooting, freeze frame data can help determine if the vehicle was moving or stationary, if the engine was warmed up or not, if the air fuel ratio was lean or rich, and other data from the time the malfunction occurred.
1.CHECK ANY OTHER DTCS OUTPUT (IN ADDITION TO P0016 OR P0017) |
Connect the intelligent tester to the DLC3.
Turn the ignition switch to ON.
Turn the tester on.
Enter the following menus: Powertrain / Engine and ECT / DTC.
Read the DTCs.
Result Result Proceed to DTC P0016 or P0017 is output A DTC P0016 or P0017 and other DTCs are output B - HINT:
- If any DTCs other than P0016 or P0017 are output, troubleshoot those DTCs first.

2.PERFORM ACTIVE TEST USING INTELLIGENT TESTER (OPERATE OIL CONTROL VALVE) |
Connect the intelligent tester to the DLC3.
Start the engine.
Turn the tester on.
Inspect the oil control valve (for intake camshaft).
Enter the following menus: Powertrain / Engine and ECT / Active Test / Control the VVT System (Bank 1).
Check the engine speed when the oil control valve is operated using the intelligent tester when the engine coolant temperature is 50°C (122°F) or less.
- HINT:
- When performing the Active Test, make sure the air conditioning is on.
- Make sure the engine coolant temperature when the engine is started is 30°C (86°F) or less.
- OK:
Tester Operation Specified Condition Oil control valve OFF Normal engine speed Oil control valve ON Engine idles roughly or stalls
(soon after oil control valve switched from OFF to ON)
Inspect the oil control valve (for exhaust camshaft).
Enter the following menus: Powertrain / Engine and ECT / Active Test / Control the VVT Exhaust Linear (Bank 1).
Check the engine speed when the oil control valve is operated using the intelligent tester when the engine coolant temperature is 50°C (122°F) or less.
- HINT:
- When performing the Active Test, the air conditioning should be on.
- Engine coolant temperature when the engine is started should be 30°C (86°F) or less.
- OK:
Tester Operation Specified Condition -128% (Oil control valve OFF) Normal engine speed 127% (Oil control valve ON) Engine idles roughly or stalls (soon after oil control valve switched from OFF to ON)

3.CHECK WHETHER DTC OUTPUT RECURS (DTC P0016 OR P0017) |
Connect the intelligent tester to the DLC3.
Turn the ignition switch to ON.
Turn the tester on.
Clear the DTCs.
Start the engine and warm it up.
Switch the ECM from normal mode to check mode using the tester.
Allow the engine to idle for 5 minutes or more.
Enter the following menus: Powertrain / Engine and ECT / DTC.
Read the DTCs.
Result Result Proceed to DTC is not output A DTC P0016 or P0017 is output B - HINT:
- DTC P0016 or P0017 is output when foreign objects in the engine oil are caught in some parts of the system. This code remain stored for a short time even after the system returns to normal. These foreign objects are then captured by the oil filter, thus eliminating the source of the problem.

4.INSPECT CAMSHAFT TIMING OIL CONTROL VALVE ASSEMBLY (FOR INTAKE OR EXHAUST CAMSHAFT) |
- HINT:
- Inspect the specified oil control valve assembly (for intake camshaft or exhaust camshaft) in accordance with the inspection result of the step Perform Active Test Using Intelligent Tester (Operate Oil Control Valve).
Remove the camshaft timing oil control valve assembly (for intake camshaft or exhaust camshaft).

- OK:
- Valve moves quickly.

5.INSPECT CAMSHAFT TIMING GEAR ASSEMBLY (FOR INTAKE OR EXHAUST CAMSHAFT) |
Inspect the camshaft timing gear assembly (for intake camshaft) (RAV4_ACA30 RM0000027IB01JX_03_0381.html).
Inspect the camshaft timing gear assembly (for exhaust camshaft) (RAV4_ACA30 RM0000027IB01JX_03_0382.html).
|
| ||||
OK | |
6.ADJUST VALVE TIMING |
- HINT:
- There are no marks on the cylinder head to align for the purpose of checking valve timing. Valve timing can only be inspected by aligning the colored plates on the timing chain with the marks on the pulleys. It may be necessary to remove and reinstall the chain to align the timing marks (RAV4_ACA30 RM0000027I901JX_03_0377.html).
