Engine -- On-Vehicle Inspection |
1. INSPECT ENGINE COOLANT |
Inspect the engine coolant (Click here).
2. INSPECT ENGINE OIL |
Inspect the engine oil (Click here).
3. INSPECT BATTERY |
Inspect the battery (Click here).
4. INSPECT AIR CLEANER FILTER ELEMENT SUB-ASSEMBLY |
Remove the air cleaner filter element from the air cleaner case.
Visually check for dirt, clogging, and/or damage to the air cleaner filter element.
- HINT:
- If the air cleaner filter element is clogged or dirty, clean it with compressed air.
- If any dirt or a clog remains even after cleaning the air cleaner filter element with compressed air, replace it.
5. INSPECT ENGINE IDLE SPEED |
- NOTICE:
- Turn all the electrical systems and the A/C OFF.
- Inspect the engine idle speed with the cooling fan OFF.
- When checking the idle speed, shift the transmission to the neutral position.
Warm up and stop the engine.
Connect the intelligent tester to the DLC3.
![]() |
Turn the engine switch on (IG).
Select the items:
Powertrain / Engine / Data List / Engine SPD.- HINT:
- Refer to the intelligent tester operation manual if you need help to select Data List.
Inspect the engine idle speed.
- Idle speed:
- 750 to 850 rpm
Turn the engine switch off.
Disconnect the intelligent tester from the DLC3.
6. INSPECT MAXIMUM ENGINE SPEED |
Start the engine.
Fully depress the accelerator pedal.
Check the maximum engine speed.
- Maximum engine speed:
- 5,100 to 5,250 rpm
7. INSPECT COMPRESSION |
Warm up and stop the engine.
Disconnect the connectors from the injectors.
Remove the glow plugs (Click here).
Inspect cylinder compression pressure.
Insert SST (attachment) into the glow plug hole.
- SST
- 09992-00025
Connect SST (compression gauge) to the SST (attachment).
- SST
- 09992-00025
While cranking the engine, measure the compression pressure.
- Standard compression pressure (Normal condition):
- 2,700 kPa (27.5 kgf/cm2, 391 psi)
- Minimum pressure:
- 2,200 kPa (22.5 kgf/cm2, 320 psi)
- Difference between each cylinder:
- 500 kPa (5.0 kgf/cm2, 71 psi) or less
- NOTICE:
- Use a fully-charged battery so that the engine speed can be increased to 250 rpm or more.
- Inspect the other cylinders in the same way.
- Measure the compression as quickly as possible.
If the cylinder compression is low, pour a small amount of engine oil into the cylinder through the glow plug holes, then inspect the compression again.
- HINT:
- If adding oil increases the compression, the piston rings and/or cylinder bore may be worn or damaged.
- If pressure stays low, a valve may be stuck or seated improperly, or there may be leakage from the gasket.
Remove the SST. (attachment and compression gauge)
Connect the connectors to the injectors.
Install the glow plugs (Click here).
- Torque:
- 12 N*m{122 kgf*cm, 9 ft.*lbf}
