Rear View Monitor System -- System Description

GENERAL
  1. To assist the driver in parking the vehicle by monitoring the area near the rear of the vehicle, this system has a television camera mounted on the luggage compartment door to display the area near the rear of the vehicle on the multi-display.

  2. This system consists of the following components: television camera ECU, television camera, multi-display.

  3. This system is equipped with a self-diagnosis system, which is operated through the multi-display.

FUNCTION OF COMPONENTS
  1. The television camera ECU controls the system by using information from the following components.

    Item
    Function
    Television Camera
Mounted on the luggage compartment door to transmit video of the area near the rear of the vehicle to the television camera ECU
    Television Camera ECU
Transmits video signals taken with the television camera and warning messages to the multi-display
    Multi-display
Receives video signals and warning messages from the television camera ECU, and displays them on the display panel
    Park/Neutral Position Switch
Transmits a shift lever R position signal to the television camera ECU
This signal changes the display of the multi-display to operate this system

OPERATION EXPLANATION
  1. The ECM, through the CAN communication system, inputs the shift lever R position signal from the park/neutral position switch to the television camera ECU when the shift lever is moved to the R position. This signal changes the display of the multi-display to operate this system.

COMMUNICATION SYSTEM

  1. The rear view monitor system communicates between the components via the AVC-LAN.

DIAGNOSTIC FUNCTION
  1. The rear view monitor system has a diagnostic function.

  2. A 3-digit "unit code (physical address)" number (in hexadecimals) is set in each function of the components that make up the AVC-LAN.

  3. A 2-digit "logical address" number (in hexadecimals) is set in each function of the components that make up the AVC-LAN.

OUTLINE OF AVC-LAN

  1. What is AVC-LAN?
AVC-LAN, an abbreviation for Audio Visual Communication Local Area Network, is a united standard developed by the manufacturers in affiliation with Toyota Motor Corporation. This standard pertains to audio and visual signals as well as switch and communication signals.

  2. Purpose:
Recently, car audio systems have rapidly developed and the functions have vastly changed. The conventional car audio system is being integrated with a multimedia interface similar to those in navigation systems. At the same time, customers are demanding higher quality from their audio systems. This is an overview of the AVC-LAN standardization. Its specific purposes are as follows:

    1. To solve sound problems, etc., caused by using components of different manufacturers through signal standardization.

    2. To allow each manufacturer to concentrate on developing products they do best. From this, reasonably priced products can be produced.

      HINT:
      1. If a +B or GND short is detected in the AVC-LAN circuit, communication is interrupted and the audio system will stop functioning.
      2. If an audio system is equipped with a navigation system, the multi-display unit acts as the master unit. If a navigation system is not equipped, the audio head unit acts as the master unit instead.
      3. The radio receiver assembly provides resistance to make communication possible.
      4. Car audio systems with an AVC-LAN circuit have a diagnostic function.
      5. Each component has a specified number (3-digit) called a physical address. Each function has a number (2-digit) called a logical address.

NOTES FOR REAR VIEW MONITOR
  1. Notes for rear view monitor:

    1. The rear view monitor may not function properly if subjected to a severe impact by any hard object.

    2. Do not scrub the cover part of the camera (resin made). Scrubbing it may scratch the cover and affect the image. Prevent organic solvents, waxes, bond removing solvents, or glass coating from adhering to the cover. Clean it off immediately and wash with water.

    3. Exposing the camera to a sudden temperature change may affect proper function.

    4. A clear image may not appear if the camera is covered with dirt, snow, mud, etc. If contaminated, wash it with water and wipe it dry. Use detergent to remove the foreign matter if necessary.

  2. Even if the rear view monitor is normal, images may be difficult to discern if:

    1. The camera screen is frosted over (immediately after turning the engine switch on (IG), image may be blurred or darker than normal).

    2. A strong beam of light, such as a sunbeam or headlight, contacts the camera.

      HINT:
When a strong beam of light, such as a sunbeam reflected off the vehicle's body, contacts the camera, the image may be blurred. This is called a "smear" phenomenon.
    3. It is too dark around the camera (at night, etc.).

    4. The ambient temperature around the camera is either too high or too low.
