SFI SYSTEM - Starter Signal Circuit


DESCRIPTION

While the engine is being cranked, current flows from terminal ST1 of the ignition switch to the park/neutral position switch assembly (automatic transaxle models) or clutch pedal switch assembly (manual transaxle models) and also flows to terminal STA of the ECM (STA Signal).

INSPECTION PROCEDURE

NOTICE:
Inspect the fuses for circuits related to this system before performing the following inspection procedure.
1.READ VALUE USING TECHSTREAM (STARTER SIGNAL)
  1. Connect the Techstream to the DLC3.

  1. Turn the ignition switch to ON.

  1. Turn the Techstream on.

  1. Enter the following menus: Powertrain / Engine and ECT / Data List / Starter Signal.

  1. Move the shift lever to P or N (for automatic transaxle models).

  1. Fully depress the clutch pedal (for manual transaxle models).

  1. Check the result when the ignition switch is turned to ON and START.

    OK:

    Ignition Switch Position
    Starter Signal
    ON
    OFF (Starter signal off)
    START
    ON (Starter signal on)


NG
Go to step 10

2.INSPECT RELAY (ST RELAY)
  1. Inspect the ST relay (COROLLA_ZRE142 RM000003D39009X.html).

3.CHECK HARNESS AND CONNECTOR (ST RELAY - ECM)
  1. Remove the ST relay from the No. 8 relay block.

  1. Disconnect the ECM connector.

  1. Measure the resistance according to the value(s) in the table below.

    Standard Resistance (Check for Open):

    ST relay terminal 2 - A50-48 (STA)

  1. Reconnect the ECM connector.

  1. Reinstall the ST relay.
