1. CHECK STEERING EFFORT (TORQUE)
NOTICE:
Some of these service operations may affect the SRS airbags. Read the precautionary notices concerning the SRS airbag system before servicing.

  1. Stop the vehicle on a level, paved road and align the wheels facing straight ahead.

  1. Disconnect the cable from the negative (-) battery terminal.

    CAUTION:
    Wait at least 90 seconds after disconnecting the cable from the negative (-) battery terminal to disable the SRS system.

  1. Remove the steering pad (COROLLA_ZRE142 RM000000UW80A1X.html).

  1. Connect the cable to the negative (-) battery terminal.

  1. Using a torque wrench, check that the steering wheel set nut is properly tightened.

    Torque:
    50 N*m{510 kgf*cm, 37 ft.*lbf}

  1. Turn the ignition switch to the ON position (the engine is stopped) so that the power steering is ready to operate.

  1. Turn the steering wheel 90 degrees to the right and check the steering effort (torque) while continuing to turn it further in the same direction.

    Steering effort (Reference):
    5.5 N*m (56 kgf*cm, 49 in.*lbf) or less

  1. Align the front wheels facing straight ahead.

  1. Disconnect the cable from the negative (-) battery terminal.

    CAUTION:
    Wait at least 90 seconds after disconnecting the cable from the negative (-) battery terminal to disable the SRS system.

  1. Install the steering pad (COROLLA_ZRE142 RM000000UW60A5X.html).

  1. Connect the cable to the negative (-) battery terminal.

  1. Clear the DTCs (COROLLA_ZRE142 RM00000275005PX.html).

  1. Inspect the airbag warning light (COROLLA_ZRE142 RM000000XFD0GSX.html).
